RHP Odrisamer Despaigne was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Sunday. The transaction capped a hectic weekend for Despaigne, who was recalled from New Orleans on Friday and made his season and Marlins debut on Saturday, when he took the loss after giving up eight runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out four over 4 2/3 innings as the Marlins fell to the New York Mets, 11-3. Despaigne will likely work out of the rotation at New Orleans. He is 0-1 with a 2.49 ERA in five starts this season between New Orleans (four starts) and Single-A Jupiter, though he walked 14 while striking out 16 over 21 2/3 innings between the two levels.

RHP Odrisamer Despaigne will make his Marlins debut Saturday when he takes the mound in the middle game of a three-game series against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Despaigne was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Friday to replace injured LHP Wei-Yin Chen, both on the 25-man roster and in the rotation. This may be the only start Despaigne makes for Chen, whom the Marlins hope to have back after a minimum stay on the disabled list. Despaigne earned the promotion by going 0-1 with a 2.49 ERA in five starts this season between New Orleans (four starts) and Class A Jupiter, though he walked 14 while striking out 16 in 21 2/3 innings between the two levels. He is 9-18 with a 4.89 ERA in 69 games (34 starts) as a big leaguer dating to 2014. Despaigne is 0-0 with a 4.00 ERA in two games (one start) against the Mets. He carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning for the San Diego Padres against New York on July 20, 2015, when Daniel Murphy broke up Despaigne's bid for the Padres' first-ever no-hitter with a two-out double.

"I thought Despaigne was equally effective (as Bundy)," Showalter said. "It was a big outing to be able to stay away from guys there."

RHP Odrisamer Despaigne was traded from the San Diego Padres to the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday for minor-league right-hander Jean Cosme. Despaigne struggled in 2015 and went 5-9 with a 5.80 ERA in 34 appearances (18 starts). He went 4-7 with a 3.36 ERA in 16 starts in 2014 as a rookie.

Despaigne will be returned to the bullpen, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

After an abbreviated outing in his last start Sunday, Despaigne will likely be moved into low-leverage relief work while the Padres give Robbie Erlin and Casey Kelly a look in the rotation.

Despaigne (5-9) struggled on Sunday, giving up four runs on five hits and a walk in 3.1 innings during a 10-3 loss to the Giants.

Despaigne got the start in place of Colin Rea (elbow soreness) and seemed to pick up right where he left off when he lost his starting spot in the rotation, serving up a three-run homer to Giants' starter Mike Leake in the second inning. While his performance in the rotation wasn't great, his recent action in the bullpen may actually have been worse (10.66 ERA in 12.2 innings bullpen innings) prompting the Padres to lessen his workload (he's made just three appearances in September). If Rea's elbow issues continue, Despaigne could fill-in once more, but considering his recent struggles the Padres might opt to examine some of their young talent instead.

Despaigne, who lost his spot in the rotation in August, will start in place of right-hander Colin Rea, who experienced some soreness in the elbow/forearm area.

Despaigne's rotation spot was in question due to the expected recall of Colin Rea, and that switch was made official Sunday afternoon. It was only a matter of time before the 28-year-old was delegated back to long relief, as he was torched for seven earned runs in his last outing and owns a 5.11 ERA on the season. He'll likely need an injury to occur in the rotation in order to start again this season.

Despaigne may lose his rotation spot following the expected recall of Colin Rea from Triple-A El Paso for Tuesday's start, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The report indicates that Rea's debut will come Tuesday, which is Despaigne's next scheduled start. After filling in (with mixed success) for an injury-riddled starting rotation, Despaigne's struggles of late (17 runs allowed in last 22 innings) have potentially opened the door for Rea, who is the Padres' second ranked prospect according to MLB.com's prospect rankings. In 107.3 innings, the righty has an ERA resting at 5.11 with a 1.27 WHIP. His 14 homers allowed rank high in National League (21st in the NL as of Saturday), yet he's fourth on his own team, trailing James Shields, Ian Kennedy and Andrew Cashner in the aforementioned category. While the others remain safely entrenched in the rotation, Despaigne's lack of success looks to have caught up with him, and he may be bullpen-bound.

Despaigne (5-8) allowed seven runs on nine hits and three walks across five innings in a 10-1 loss to the Brewers on Thursday.

Despaigne struck out just one batter as well, so it was about as bad of a fantasy performance as you could ask for. The rough outing raised his ERA above five and if he continues to struggle, his spot in the rotation could be in jeopardy. His next start is schedule for Tuesday against Cincinnati.

Despaigne (5-7) picked up the win Saturday with six innings of three-run ball against the Marlins. He struck out five on the night while surrendering five hits and a walk.

Despaigne struck out more than three batters for the first time in five appearances, and his meager 4.93 K/9 suggests this recent run of mediocrity wasn't a fluke. The 28-year-old has picked up wins on consecutive starts against the punchless Marlins, but he had been 0-4 since the start of June prior to these two encounters with the fish. Despaigne has another good matchup in his next outing Thursday in Milwaukee, so he could hold streaming value on a day with only 10 games.

Despaigne will not start in place of Ian Kennedy on Friday, as the Padres have announced Kennedy will end up making the start himself, as originally planned, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Kennedy had hoped to be with his wife, who is giving birth to the couple's child back in San Diego, but he was unable to leave Miami in time, so he'll remain with the team and take the hill Friday night. That means Despaigne will likely return to his usual spot in the rotation, putting him on track to start Saturday's game, as was the original plan.

Despaigne will start Friday's game in place of Ian Kennedy (personal).

Kennedy is away from the team to be with his wife, who is giving birth to the couple's fourth child. Despaigne will be bumped up from Saturday, and it's unknown at this time how the rotation will be shuffled over the weekend.

Despaigne allowed six runs on seven hits over five innings in his seventh loss Tuesday against the Giants. He struck out just one and walked two.

Despaigne's excellent control isn't enough to offset his inability to pick up strikeouts, and Despaigne's lackluster stuff was crushed by Giants hitters, with the exploits including two home runs and a double. His ERA is up to 4.98 despite just 19 walks in 90.1 plate appearances.

Despaigne will transition into a long-relief role for the Padres' series with the Rangers this weekend, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports.

The Padres have decided to go with Ian Kennedy, James Shields, and Tyson Ross for their final series leading into the All-Star break. Despaigne did not begin the year as a member of the rotation, but injuries to members of the staff have allowed him to make 13 starts on the year. There's no indication that Despaigne is being permanently dropped from the rotation, but he will not make a start before the All-Star break.
