Tue May 17 202213:13Matt Chapman Smacks Sixth Homer Monday
Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman enjoyed a solid game Monday against the Seattle Mariners, going 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk. While it was his sixth homer of the season, strong games have been hard to come by for Chapman this year. In May, he's managed just five hits total in 44 at-bats. After a down 2021 season in which he recorded a .717 OPS in 609 plate appearances, fantasy managers have to be concerned that things won't get much better than Chapman's current .185/.266/.637 slash line, though he should continue to get into the lineup and provide some power on the back of his stellar defense at the hot corner.

Thu Apr 14 202216:41Matt Chapman Heading To The Bench On Thursday
Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman is absent from the starting lineup for Thursday's game against Luis Severino and the Toronto Blue Jays. Santiago Espinal is shifting over to cover third base for the game while Cavan Biggio is at the keystone. Chapman is off to a slow start to the year. Over his first six games as a Blue Jay, he's gone 4-for-21 with a home run and a double. The most alarming statistic is his nine strikeouts as strikeouts have been a big problem for him over the years. Expect to see him back in the lineup on Friday, when he'll be facing his former team, the Oakland Athletics.

Tue Mar 22 202213:03Matt Chapman Agrees To Two-Year Extension
The Toronto Blue Jays and third baseman Matt Chapman have agreed to a two-year, $25 million contract extension on Tuesday, according to sources. The Blue Jays buy out Chapman's final two years of arbitration with the new deal after acquiring him from the Oakland Athletics in a trade. The 28-year-old will receive a $1 million signing bonus and will have salaries of $12 million in 2022 and 2023, per MLB Network's Jon Heyman. Chapman's defense is among the best in the league at the hot corner, but he's struggled at the plate the last two years and hit just .210/.314/.403 with 27 home runs and 72 RBI in 622 plate appearances over 151 games in his final season with the A's. But with the move to a stacked Blue Jays lineup and a much better hitting environment, Chapman's fantasy stock is on the rise.

Wed Mar 16 202210:10Matt Chapman Traded To The Blue Jays
The Oakland Athletics traded third baseman Matt Chapman to the Toronto Blue Jays for Kevin Smith, Gunnar Hoglund, Zach Logueand Kirby Snead. He is one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball. He now joins a loaded Toronto Blue Jays lineup, including Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, George Springer, and Teoscar Hernandez. The 28-year-old slashed .214/.314/.403 with 27 home runs, 72 RBI, 75 runs scored, and three stolen bases over 151 games for the A's in 2021. With a park upgrade and a better supporting cast, Chapman should improve on his 2021 numbers and is a borderline top-10 third baseman in mixed standard leagues.

Tue Sep 28 202111:32Matt Chapman Sets A's Single-Season Strikeout Record
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in a loss to the Mariners on Monday. His third whiff of the night was his 198th of the season, passing Jack Cust for the most strikeouts in a season in franchise history. Chapman simply hasn't looked right since having hip surgery after the 2019 season. He posted a whopping 35% strikeout rate in the shortened 2020 season and has posted a 32.7% K-rate this year while setting the strikeout record for Oakland. Perhaps a full offseason of rest and recovery will help Chapman return to his All-Star ways in 2022? That's a debate for next year. For now, Chapman isn't a start-worthy player in fantasy for the last week of the season.

Mon Sep 20 202109:46Matt Chapman Homers In Win Over Angels On Sunday
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a win over the Angels on Sunday afternoon. The blast was Chapman's 26th of the season as he's had a decent season in the power department despite his batting average woes. The 28-year-old is batting just .222 this season thanks to a sky-high 31.7% strikeout rate. This comes on the heels of a 35% strikeout rate in the 2020 season, so there is reason to believe Chapman's whiff issues are here to stay. He's a fringe-starter in deeper roto leagues ahead of a three-game set with the Mariners.

Sat Sep 11 202119:27Matt Chapman Unlikely To Play Sunday After Early Exit
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman (shin) is unlikely to play in Sunday's finale with the Rangers, according to Martin Gallegos of MLB.com. Chapman exited in the fifth inning after he had fouled a ball off his shin, and manager Bob Melvin said that he doubts Chapman will return to the lineup tomorrow. Josh Harrison entered the game to replace him, and will likely get the start at third in Sunday's finale.

Mon Sep 6 202111:00Matt Chapman Whiffs Twice Sunday As Strikeout Issues Persist
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in a loss to the Blue Jays on Sunday. The former All-Star had a miserable 2020 season thanks to a whopping 35% strikeout rate and those issues have continued in 2021 as Chapman is whiffing 31.6% of the time this season. The strikeouts haven't totally sapped Chapman of fantasy value, he does have 24 homers this season, but the whiffs have torpedoed his batting average to just .224 as he's hurt fantasy managers in that department. Things won't get easier for Chapman and the slumping A's as the first-place White Sox roll into Oakland for a three-game set.

Wed Sep 1 202116:16Matt Chapman Batting Cleanup After Big Month Of August
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman is batting cleanup versus the Tigers on Wednesday after posting his best month of the season in August. In the previous month, Chapman posted a team-high .964 OPS with nine homers, three more homers than he had in any other month this season. The gold-glover has had a rough season with the lumber, mostly due to a strikeout rate that has been above 30% all season long. Chapman still whiffed plenty in August, but he's showing enough power to be useful in fantasy leagues again. He'll look to carry his recent success into good matchups with Wily Peralta and Matt Manning to begin the month of September.

Fri Aug 27 202111:01Matt Chapman Reaches Four Times In Loss To Yankees
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman went 2-for-2 with two walks and a solo homer in a loss to the Yankees on Thursday. Chapman crushed a Jameson Taillon offering for a homer that Statcast measured 111 MPH off the bat, Chapman's second-hardest hit ball this season. The veteran third baseman has had his struggles this season, specifically in the strikeout department, but he's been hot lately as he's got a .955 OPS thus far in August. He'll face a tough matchup on Friday, however, as the A's are lined up to face Yankee's ace Gerrit Cole.

Tue Aug 24 202113:58Matt Chapman Back In The Lineup On Tuesday
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman (foot) is back in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against Chris Flexen and the Seattle Mariners. Chapman was a late scratch from Monday's lineup as he was dealing with a left foot contusion. Josh Harrison shifted over to third base for the game. Chapman has had a rough year overall, but he's been showing signs of turning things around lately. He's hit five home runs over his last eight games. He's slashing .258/.378/.516 over August as a whole, a big improvement upon July, when he slashed .180/.247/.292.

Mon Aug 23 202120:46Matt Chapman Dealing With Foot Contusion
Updating an earlier report, Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman (foot) was scratched from Monday's lineup due to a left foot contusion, according to Martin Gallegos of MLB.com. Gallegos reports that this issue could be related to Sunday's game, in which Chapman fouled a pitch off his foot. Managers should consider him day-to-day for now, and expect him to return to action Tuesday or Wednesday.

Mon Aug 23 202120:31Matt Chapman Scratched From Lineup Monday
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman has been scratched from the starting lineup on Monday night, according to Shayna Rubin of the Mercury News. There's no word yet as to why Chapman was scratched, as Josh Harrison will now enter the lineup at third base and bat sixth in the order for the series opener with Seattle. Chapman is slashing .222/.317/.398 with 19 homers, three steals, 57 RBI and 62 runs scored over 121 games this year. Consider him day-to-day for now, and keep an eye out for updates on his condition later tonight.

Tue Aug 17 202110:24Matt Chapman Homers In Third-Straight Game Monday At Chicago
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in a loss to the White Sox on Monday. It was Chapman's third-straight game with a homer as he seems to have found his power stroke after struggling most of the season. Most of Chapman's issues stem from a sky-high 31.7% strikeout rate, which has the former All-Star batting just .224 on the season. He can't be counted on for a high batting average with all those whiffs, but fantasy managers can ride this hot streak with three matchups against the back-end of the Chicago rotation next on the schedule.

Thu Aug 12 202119:22Matt Chapman Ties A's Record With Five Walks On Thursday
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman tied a franchise record for walks in a game as he drew five free passes in a blowout win over the Indians on Thursday. Chapman came up in the ninth inning with a chance to tie the MLB record, but he struck out swinging. All that time on the bases translated to three runs scored. The former All-Star is marred in a rough season as he's batting just .214 thanks to a sky-high 32% strikeout rate. He'll have good matchups this weekend at Texas, however, so fantasy managers in need of 3B help can do worse than Chapman.

Thu Aug 5 202111:47Matt Chapman Continuing To Struggle With Whiffs
Oakland Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman has had a rough time at the plate this year. Over 106 games, he's slashing .215/.304/.371 with 14 home runs, 48 RBI and 50 runs. He's been plagued by strikeouts all year long. He's struck out six times over his last 12 at-bats and his 32% strikeout rate ranks in the bottom 3% of the league. He also ranks in the bottom 3% of the league in xBA (.204) and in the bottom 26% of the league in xSLG (.373). Fantasy managers are free to abandon ship and drop Chapman in just about all formats, but he should be monitored in all leagues in case he catches fire over the final months of the year.

Sat Jul 31 202102:55Joey Votto homers for 7th straight game, 1 shy of MLB record
NEW YORK (AP) — Joey Votto homered for the seventh straight game, one shy of a major league record, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 6-2 on Friday night. Jonathan India went deep twice for the Reds, including a leadoff shot that came on Carlos Carrasco’s first pitch with the Mets. Acquired from Cleveland in January, the veteran right-hander finally made his New York debut after recovering from a hamstring injury. It was an up-and-down day for the Mets, who made a big deal to get Javier Báez from the Chicago Cubs before baseball’s trade deadline — and then revealed injured ace Jacob deGrom will be shut down for two more weeks because of inflammation in his pitching elbow, making it unlikely he’ll rejoin the NL East leaders before September. Báez was acquired from the Cubs along with right-hander Trevor Williams for outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Mets’ first-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft. Báez is expected to join the Mets on Saturday and will play shortstop... [More]
