Mon Mar 2 202015:54New Rangers corners with 3B Frazier, Bird competing at 1B
Todd Frazier and Greg Bird are at opposite corners for the Texas Rangers, and at different stages in their careers. Frazier clearly wasn't the top choice at third base for the Rangers, considering their well-publicized pursuit of top free agent Anthony Rendon this offseason. But the former two-time All-Star can provide some veteran stability after six different players started at the hot corner for Texas last season following the retirement of Adrian Beltre. “I'm just trying to be who I am, and trying to maintain that position,” said the 34-year-old Frazier, with his fifth team and going into his 10th big league season. “So for me, play the defense I know how, focus on driving guys in, and the rest will take care of itself."The 27-year-old Bird signed a non-roster deal before spring training, getting an opportunity to compete to be the Rangers' first baseman after being plagued by a series of injuries the past five years with the New York Yankees. “He's an impressive, impressive kid,” Rangers... Wed Feb 19 202014:59Choo relishing 2020, the last year of big Rangers contract
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Shin-Soo Choo wants to enjoy baseball even more this season, all of those times in the clubhouse and on the field while still at the top of the Texas Rangers lineup."I don't know what's going to happen at the end of the year," said Choo, the 37-year-old leadoff hitter going into the final season of his $130 million, seven-year contract.Choo has genuine confidence that he can play at a high level for another couple of years, or more, after 2020. There is just no way to know if he will be re-signed by the Rangers, maybe go to another team or decide it's time to be at home full-time with his wife and three growing children. Those are all questions he said are too early to consider. “I still love this game," Choo said. "I'm still lucky to play major league level, and then it's very special, major league uniform, wearing my number on it, my name on it on the back. That's very special, very lucky. I still feel that way, so we'll see.”His oldest kid is a 14-year-old son... [More]

Sun Jan 12 202019:12AP source: Rangers, Frazier reach agreement on $5M deal
Veteran third baseman Todd Frazier and the Texas Rangers have reached an agreement on a $5 million, one-year contract, filling a significant need for the team. A person familiar with the deal said Sunday that the agreement was pending a successful physical. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced. Frazier will make $3.5 million in 2020, and the deal includes a 2021 club option with a $1.5 million buyout for the two-time All-Star. Third base is a primary need for the Rangers, who lost out in their pursuit of top free agent Anthony Rendon this offseason when the Texas native instead signed with the division rival Los Angeles Angels. Frazier also provides a right-handed hitter in the middle of a left-leaning lineup, and could play first base if Texas adds other players. Adrian Beltre, a four-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove third baseman who had 3,166 career hits, retired after the 2018 season. He played the last... [More]

Sun Sep 29 201920:43Heat of the moment: Rangers say adios to Globe Life Park
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Elvis Andrus wasn't going to sit out the season finale of the long-eliminated Texas Rangers, not even on a scorching afternoon that illustrated why Globe Life Park is getting replaced after just 26 seasons."I know it's super hot, but it's a lot of memories throughout the game," Andrus said of the park where he debuted as a 20-year-old a decade ago and played in the club's only two World Series in 2010 and '11.On the seventh day of the fall, the temperature reached the mid-90s for a sellout crowd that included former President George W. Bush, who was the managing partner of the club when the ballpark opened in 1994.After a 6-1 victory over the New York Yankees, a parade long enough to make a ring around the field took home plate across the street to Globe Life Field. The retractable-roof stadium, which officially opens with a March 31 game against the Los Angeles Angels, will have the option of air conditioning once the Texas heat kicks in next spring and summer."I...
