Venditte (shoulder) was activated from the disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Monday, Jane Lee of MLB.com reports.

The switch-pitcher was a casualty of the A's waiver claim of Danny Valencia. In 19 appearances for Triple-A Nashville earlier in the season, he held a 1.30 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP and did not give up a run in four appearances for the A's. Venditte's versatility makes him an intriguing possibility to be called back up before the end of the season with any injuries in the bullpen.

Venditte (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the DL at some point this week, MLB.com's Jane Lee reports.

Manager Bob Melvin didn't specify when he expected to have Venditte back in the bullpen, but did say that the switch-pitcher would rejoin the relief corps "real soon." Venditte made four appearances with the A's before going on the DL in mid-June with a right shoulder strain.

The switch-pitcher has had a few hiccups during his three-game rehab stint with High-A Stockton, where he's given up two home runs across four innings of relief duty, but he endured no further soreness with his right shoulder during the assignment. He'll throw from both the left and right sides during back-to-back games with Nashville, and could be activated from the DL thereafter.

Prior to this, Venditte had thrown from one exclusive side in each of his rehab appearances, so using both is a major step for him. The 30-year-old reported no pain in his right shoulder, the one that was injured, in a previous outing, so the focus at this point is getting both pitching motions major league ready.

Venditte was underwhelming in his outing Thursday, allowing one run on two hits in an inning of work as a right-handed pitcher. It's a positive sign that he was pain free following the outing, however, as he landed on the disabled list with a strain in his right shoulder. He'll make another appearance Saturday.

Following Thursday's outing, Venditte will then throw an all left-handed frame at Stockton on Saturday. In doing so, he'll be able to key on using one arm in each outing to build strength in both. It still remains to be seen how long Venditte will need on his rehab assignment before joining Oakland's bullpen, however.

It's the right shoulder that has been causing problems for Venditte, but in order for him to maximize his abilities, he needs to have the functionality of both his arms before he'll get another look with the A's. He could begin a rehab assignment later this week if Monday's batting practice session goes smoothly.

After bringing it in for a successful flat-ground session earlier in the week, Venditte was cleared to resume mound work, marking an important step in his recovery from a right shoulder strain. He will throw a bullpen session left-handed Saturday, and if all goes well, a live batting practice session would perhaps be next.

With Venditte successfully extending his long toss out to 100 feet without issue, the team will have him move it in to throw to a catcher on flat ground. There should be more clarification on Venditte's status after he gets some work off the mound during the All-Star break.

Venditte, a switch-pitcher, threw 40 pitches with each arm, tossing from 60 feet and 75 feet. He'll likely attempt to ramp up his activity during Wednesday's session, but he remains without a return timetable.

After a two-week-long shutdown period, Venditte is now set to resume a throwing program. It's just the first hurdle in his recover from a right shoulder strain, and his status for a return will remain cloudy until he's cleared to throw off elevated ground.

Venditte became the first pitcher in major league history to throw as both a lefty and a righty. He switched back and forth, depending on the opposing hitter, during his two inning stint. While certainly interesting and impressive that he is able to pitch from both sides at the highest level of the sport, he is likely to pitch primarily in low leverage situations which effectively eliminates any real fantasy value.

Best known for his ability to pitch both left- and right-handed, the 29-year-old Venditte is having a strong season at Triple-A Nashville, sporting a 1.36 ERA, 9.0 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 through 33 innings. While his switch-pitching figures to garner plenty of attention, he'll likely be used in a middle/long-relief role, making him an afterthought in the vast majority of leagues.

Venditte signed a minor league contract with the Athletics that includes an invitation to spring training, CSNBayArea.com reports.

Venditte has received much media attention throughout his minor league career due to his ability to pitch either right- or left-handed, but as a 29-year-old who has yet to reach the big leagues, he'll just represent an organization depth arm out of the bullpen for the Athletics. The switch-pitcher compiled a 3.36 ERA and struck out 53 batters over 56.1 innings at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the Yankees system in 2014.
