OF Carlos Gomez returned to center field Thursday for the first time since suffering a bad ankle sprain Sept. 9 and batted sixth. "We had thoughts about playing him (Wednesday)," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "He went out and worked (Wednesday) and throughout the night. ... The defense, we'll probably keep a closer eye on that than anything else." Gomez went 2-for-3, with the two-run double in the first to spur the Rangers.

CF Carlos Gomez was on the bench on Wednesday night, still nursing a right ankle sprain, and Rangers manager Jeff Banister didn't sound optimistic Gomez could do more than reserve duty anytime soon. Gomez still maintains he is really close. "He tried to argue his way into the starting lineup," Banister said, "but just based on what my eyes told me. ... Gomez is out indefinitely, but it already getting treatment on the ankle. "The doctor doesn't want me to put any weight on it for the next couple of days," Gomez said. "There's nothing I can do right now, just try and recover as fast as I can and do what they want me to do."

So we'll just see if we can't find the right mix of guys out there to win baseball games." DeShields was the Rangers' designated hitter Saturday. He has started 46 times in left field and 26 in center.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 16 and the first date he would be eligible to return to the active roster is Aug. 26. Gomez is batting .251 with 15 home runs and 42 RBIs in 86 games (83 starts) with Texas this season. He was also on the disabled list from May 15-June 15 with a right hamstring strain.

INF Miguel Gomez was promoted from Double-A Richmond before Friday's series opener against the Miami Marlins. The 24-year-old made his major league debut as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning and lined out to right field on the first pitch he saw. Gomez was hitting .305 and was fourth in the Eastern League with 94 hits at the time of his promotion.

OF Carlos Gomez was not in the starting lineup for the second straight game on Wednesday night with a back strain. Gomez suffered the injury during Monday's game. He did make a pinch-hitting appearance in the eighth inning and struck out.
