Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke will start this season in the dugout.Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Greinke won't pitch on opening day because of what's perceived to be a minor health issue.Greinke exited his latest start after one inning because of tightness in his groin. He's scheduled to pitch again in spring training Wednesday.The Diamondbacks don't want to push him to be ready for their first game March 29 at home against Colorado. Without this wrinkle, Lovullo said Greinke would've started the opener for the third straight year."Every staff has a No. 1 and he fit the bill perfectly," Lovullo said. "He won 17 games last year. INF Dixon Machado was reinstated Friday from the paternity list. He was not in the starting lineup but was playing shortstop regularly while SS Jose Iglesias was stranded in Florida by Hurricane Irma after going on paternity leave himself. Machado will return to a reserve role.

2B Dixon Machado was placed on the paternity list. Machado (.278, 11 RBIs, 15 runs scored in 140 at-bats this season) is expected back Friday after the birth of his second child.

RHP Andres Machado had his contract selected from Triple-A Omaha on Friday as the rosters expanded for September. Machado was called to the majors for the first time in his career after splitting time at three levels this season. The 24-year-old was 2-2 in seven Triple-A starts with a 3.63. He struck out 38 batters in 34 2/3 innings. He started the season at Class-A Wilmington.

SS Dixon Machado got a rare start Sunday, giving SS Jose Iglesias a day off. Machado rifled a two-run double off the third baseman's glove to spark Detroit's four-run sixth. "He's produced all year for us," RHP Justin Verlander said. "To produce like he does, playing just once in awhile, is pretty hard to do. I'm happy for him. He's looking more comfortable in the clubhouse as the season has progressed. I think he's going to be a pretty good player for us in the future."

2B Dixon Machado drew a start Sunday with manager Brad Ausmus giving 2B Ian Kinsler a day out of the starting lineup, which could be the start of more playing time for the backup infielder. "Probably," was the one-word response from the manager when asked if Machado could see more playing time the final two months of the season. "He's hit well in this role," Ausmus said. "I would think at some point, whether it's later this year or next year, I think he's shown enough that you want to find out if he can play on a regular basis." Machado finished the game batting .313 in 83 at-bats spanning 41 games.

INF Dixon Machado hit his first major league home run Thursday. Machado blasted a 1-1 pitch off San Francisco's Chris Stratton into the left-field stands. Machado was making a spot start for shortstop Jose Iglesias, who got the afternoon off. He's hitting .314 despite his limited opportunities to play. He has been on the active roster all season but has only 70 official at-bats. Machado will likely become a starter if either Ian Kinsler or Jose Iglesias gets dealt before the trading deadline.

2B Dixon Machado batted leadoff for the first time in his career. His sixth inning single was one of the three Detroit hits. Machado had batted last in the order seven times and three times hit eighth in 10 starts this season.

The Tigers kept Machado on the opening-day roster in large part because he was out of options and they believed he wouldn't clear waivers. He'll continue to get spot starts at second as well as short.

Machado, in his age 25 season, played just eight games for the Tigers last year, hitting .100. He provides insurance in case something happens to SS Jose Iglesias or 2B Ian Kinsler. Machado is solid defensively and spent the winter adding some muscle to give his bat a little more life.

He provides the Tigers with additional depth in the infield. "He's a really good defender at a premium defensive position," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said.

SS Dixon Machado was optioned Sunday to Triple-A Toledo to clear a roster spot for the activation of CF Cameron Maybin from the disabled list.
