(AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays intend to use a four-man rotation while filling a fifth starter's role with a combination of multi-inning relievers this season.Manager Kevin Cash delivered the surprising news Wednesday, saying the club thinks it has enough pitching depth to make the plan work long-term."We're going to schedule in a bullpen day as our fifth starter," Cash said, noting the Rays will "learn a lot in the first six weeks" while determining whether it's feasible to try to stick with a four-man rotation for an entire season.The projected rotation currently features Chris Archer, Nathan Eovaldi, Blake Snell and Jake Faria.The group of potential multi-inning relievers who'll be considered for "bullpen day" roles include Matt Andriese, Yonny Chirinos and Anthony Banda."It's a reflection of who we have available," Cash said. RHP Matt Andriese allowed three earned runs and five hits in five innings Wednesday but was pleased about throwing at least 100 pitches for the first time since being activated from the disabled list. He finished the season 0-4 with an 8.03 ERA in his last seven starts.

RHP Matt Andriese (5-3, 4.44 ERA) has not pitched past the sixth inning since returning from the disabled list Aug. 28 from a right hip stress reaction.

RHP Matt Andriese gave up two runs and five hits and struck out three in 4 1/3 innings on Friday night. Andriese threw just 62 pitches (43 strikes) in the outing.

RHP Matt Andriese did not fare any better in his second start back from a hip injury Saturday against the Red Sox. Andriese (5-3, 4.46 ERA) coughedd up eight runs (six earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. In 6 2/3 innings since returning from the injury that sidelined him for two months, Andriese has allowed 11 earned runs (14.85 ERA). "Obviously coming back from the injury, I was just trying to go out there and put up zeroes obviously," Andriese said.

RHP Matt Andriese (5-2) drew the loss Sunday against the White Sox in his first start since coming off the 60-day disabled list because of a stress reaction in his right hip. Andriese allowed five runs on six hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out five, and he left the game after 74 pitches. "I liked that I felt healthy," Andriese said. "I was consistent in the strike zone, but I think I made a couple pitches that were easier to hit."

RHP Matt Andriese will make his first start since June 10 after missing more than two months with a hip injury. After Andriese threw three innings in relief against the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 28, Rays manager Kevin Cash said he would keep his eye on Andriese in the middle innings Sunday to determine how long his outing will last. We'd planned it out; we knew he was going to pitch (Monday). And we're very fortunate Austin Pruitt went as efficient as he did, but we had to get Matt back into the rotation and had to get him his innings."

Andriese, who had been out with a right hip injury, picked up a save. Rays manager Kevin Cash said with the workload of the bullpen, "we felt it was probably in our best interests to get Andriese up here" and be used as a reliever. "Matty is built up to where he could provide 90, close to a hundred pitches," Cash said. "We need to give these guys in the bullpen a little bit of a blow. They've been worked really, really hard." Andriese was 5-1 with a 3.54 ERA in a dozen starts before the injury.
