CLEVELAND (AP) — Hours before the first pitch of Sunday's series finale against the Yankees, two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber sprinted across the sun-soaked outfield inside an empty Progressive Field.Except for getting the occasional glance from ushers and vendors preparing for the crowd, Kluber was alone. When he finished a down-and-back between neon yellow cones, Kluber checked a stopwatch to make sure he was hitting his marks. In a day or two, his broken right arm will be re-evaluated to see if he can pitch for Cleveland again this season. For now, his status remains uncertain.Same as the Indians.Approaching the halfway point of a season starting to snake sideways, it is hard to get a handle on the three-time defending AL Central champions, who will host next month's All-Star game.Slowed by a too-often-limp offense, injuries to Kluber as well as starters Mike Clevinger and Carlos Carrasco and the curious case of All-Star third baseman José Ramirez, the Indians are at a crossroads.They're... Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel finally have jobs, and each also has a chance to affect the playoff race in the National League. It was no surprise they both ended up with contenders. Kimbrel signed with the Chicago Cubs, Keuchel with the Atlanta Braves. If the season ended now, those teams would be in the postseason, and adding these pitchers could be the equivalent of making a major pickup at the trade deadline — only the Cubs and Braves did it sooner.Kimbrel's role with Chicago isn't hard to predict. The 31-year-old closer has 333 saves in his career, including 42 last year with the champion Red Sox. The Cubs have been without closer Brandon Morrow, who is coming off elbow surgery. They have some other relievers with closing experience in Steve Cishek, Brandon Kintzler and Pedro Strop, and even without Kimbrel, they're atop the NL Central at the moment. But slotting Kimbrel in as the closer could create a domino effect that makes the whole bullpen more imposing.Keuchel joins an Atlanta... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Robinson Canó is right back on the injured list.Four days after returning to the lineup, the slumping second baseman was placed on the 10-day IL by the New York Mets again Sunday with tightness in his left quadriceps. The move is retroactive to Thursday, after Canó aggravated the injury Wednesday night in his first game since May 22.Canó sat out the next three days while the Mets tried to determine whether he needed another stint on the injured list."When you have an active guy and you start him, you want him to be able to go nine innings. I don't think at this point we were confident that that could happen safely without putting him at any kind of risk," manager Mickey Callaway said. "So we feel like a rehab assignment probably will be the best thing, and a progression throughout that rehab assignment to get him to where he needs to be. He could have probably pinch-hit, but we don't need Robbie to be just a pinch-hitter, we need him to be a starter and go out there and... [More]

BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez is out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game because of back tightness.Boston manager Alex Cora said Sunday the 31-year-old Martinez "is feeling better, but he's not ready to play."Martinez has not started eight of the last 20 games. He missed four games in Toronto from May 21-23. Cora said the first two games were because of illness and the last two because of his back.Martinez hit .330 with 43 homers and a major league-leading 130 RBIs last year after signing a $110 million, five-year contract. He is batting .296 with 12 homers and 33 RBIs this season — down from .318 with 21 homers and 54 RBIs at this point last year.Boston also is without first basemen Mitch Moreland (strained right quadriceps) and Steve Pearce (lower back strain).___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

NEW YORK (AP) — Robinson Canó is right back on the injured list.Four days after returning to the lineup, the second baseman was placed on the 10-day IL again by the New York Mets with tightness in his left quadriceps. The move was made Sunday, retroactive to Thursday, after Canó aggravated the injury Wednesday night in his first game since May 22.The eight-time All-Star says he feels good but agrees with the team's decision because he's had only two at-bats in 2½ weeks and wants to be able to play a full game and contribute offensively as soon as he comes back. The 36-year-old Canó says he's scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Syracuse or Double-A Binghamton. The move means Canó will miss two Subway Series games against his former team at Yankee Stadium this week.To replace him on the roster, New York selected the contract of right-handed reliever Tim Peterson from Syracuse.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
