A look at what's happening around the majors Friday:NAME THAT NICKNAMEJerseys will take on a different look during Players' Weekend, when big leaguers are encouraged to be creative with what goes on the back of their uniforms.Cleveland outfielder Yasiel Puig will have Wild Horse, for the way he charges around the bases. Rays pitcher Charlie Morton will use Ground Chuck, for how he induces grounders. Reds first baseman Joey Votto will go with Who — for the "Abbott and Costello" comedy routine of "Who's on First?"Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis is skipping letters and going with an emoji — of lettuce, to rhyme with his last name.OCTOBER PREVIEW?Yankees lefty James Paxton is having one of the best stretches of his career. Paxton (9-6, 4.53 ERA) takes the mound at Dodger Stadium looking to win his fifth straight start — he won seven in a row in 2017 with Seattle.Los Angeles counters with lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu, who is 12-3 and leads the majors with a 1.64 ERA.New York manager Aaron Boone knows this... BALTIMORE (AP) — The Orioles have set a major league record by allowing their 259th home run this season, breaking a tie with the 2016 Cincinnati Reds with 34 games remaining.Baltimore right-hander Asher Wojciechowski surrendered a solo shot to Tampa Bay's Austin Meadows in the third inning Thursday night to break a tie with the Reds. Wojchiechowski allowed another solo homer in the fifth to Willy Adames, his 12th homer given up this season. The O's entered the game 41-86, the second worst record in baseball behind the Detroit Tigers.Baltimore likely won't be the only club to pass the 2016 Reds in a historically homer-friendly season. Entering Thursday, the Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies were on track to allow at least 259 homers. The league as a whole is on pace to easily surpass the record of 6,105 homers in 2017.The teams were tied 2-2 when a downpour sent the opener of a four-game series into a rain delay in the bottom of the fifth.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates are parting ways with veteran catcher Francisco Cervelli, who's worked his way back from another concussion and is hoping to catch on with a contender. The Pirates announced Thursday they had requested unconditional release waivers on the 33-year-old Cervelli. He's played 34 games this season, hitting .193 with one home run and five RBIs.Cervelli has suffered several concussions in his career, and hasn't played in the majors since his most recent one on May 25.Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington says the club wants give Cervelli — who recently completed a rehabilitation assignment — an opportunity to sign with another team rather than sit the bench. The last-place Pirates have split the catching duties between Elias Diaz and Jacob Stallings. Cervelli is in the final season of a three-year, $31 million contract.Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said there was a plan in place to have Cervelli return this season."We started talking about different opportunities,"... HOUSTON (AP) — Amid criticism from Major League Baseball, the Houston Astros on Thursday defended the team's decision to deny a newspaper reporter access to the clubhouse until after ace pitcher Justin Verlander finished his postgame session with the media.MLB said Wednesday night's incident violated its media guidelines and the Detroit Free Press said barring its reporter, Anthony Fenech, was "intolerable."Verlander, who played for Detroit for 13 seasons, had just pitched a two-hitter in a 2-1 loss to the Tigers. The Astros opened their clubhouse at 9:35 p.m. As the rest of the media was allowed to enter, Fenech, who has a credential issued by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, was stopped by three Astros security officials.Fenech contacted MLB vice president of communications Mike Teevan and was allowed in at 9:41 p.m., after Verlander had concluded his media session. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels rookie right-hander Griffin Canning will miss the rest of the season with mild elbow inflammation. The Angels announced their decision Thursday.Canning is the Angels' most promising pitching prospect in several years. The 23-year-old Orange County native went 5-6 with a 4.58 ERA in 18 appearances after getting called up in April. He pitched seven sharp innings of one-run ball in a victory over the White Sox last Sunday, but emerged with elbow discomfort. Canning already went on the injured list for 10 days earlier in August to rest his elbow.Canning is the second Angels starter to be sidelined by a season-ending injury in August. BALTIMORE (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe suffered a quad injury during a rehabilitation assignment and likely will miss the rest of the season.Manager Kevin Cash said Lowe got hurt on Wednesday while playing for Triple-A Durham."He's most likely done for the year," Cash said Thursday. "I think that's the best way to say it. If he comes back early, great."Lowe, an All-Star selection, is batting .276 with 16 homers and 49 RBIs. The second-year player has been out since July 2 with a right shin injury."From basically July 2, 3 or whatever it was, it's kind of become a disappointment," Cash said. "He's done everything we could ask in the first half for us. Very deserving of being on the All-Star team."Unfortunately, the shin injury comes out and now this as he's getting closer. Just not ideal, but we're equipped with some guys that can certainly come in and continue to fill that void. We've been doing it, but we're going to miss him."___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
