A look at what's happening around the majors today:BIG BROOMThe Mets will try for a four-game sweep over Arizona amid a crowded NL wild-card race. The Diamondbacks had won 11 of 13 entering the series, but New York has shut them down completely, outscoring them 15-3 through the first three games. Right-hander Marcus Stroman (7-13, 3.42) will try to keep that domination going, although he hasn't been sharp since a July trade from Toronto.Arizona will start lefty Alex Young (7-3, 3.38) in the finale. He gave up two hits and struck out 12 over eight innings in a 2-0 win over Cincinnati in his previous outing.CY-ZING IT UPJustin Verlander can enhance his Cy Young Award credentials when he starts for the AL West-leading Astros at Minute Maid Park against Oakland. Verlander tries for his major league-leading 19th win — he tops the AL with a 2.52 ERA and leads the majors with 200 innings. His 264 strikeouts are second to teammate Gerrit Cole's 281 for most in the big league.Homer Bailey (12-8,... [More]

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have dealt with plenty of injuries and adversity this season. They will be dealing with more going into a key series.All-Star closer Brad Hand was sent back to Cleveland on Wednesday for an MRI on his left arm. Manager Terry Francona said after the Indians' 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels that the MRI on the left-hander was clean. However, Francona added that Hand — who is second in the AL with 34 saves — will likely not be available for this weekend's series against AL Central leader Minnesota. The Indians trailed the Twins by 6½ games a week ago, but have cut the margin to four after winning five of six on the road. They took two of three last weekend in Minnesota.Despite all the setbacks, the Indians are just a half-game out of a postseason spot. They trail Oakland for the second AL wild card and are one game behind Tampa Bay."He wasn't going to pitch (Wednesday) so rather than wait we sent him back on the red-eye last night," Francona... NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso has been full of surprises during a memorable rookie season with the Mets. For fans in his new home city, his gesture Wednesday night might be the biggest home run yet.Alonso coordinated the purchase and production of custom 9/11 cleats for Mets players to wear on the 18th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The shoes were painted red, white and blue and included "We will never forget" and lettering for first responder units.Following the Mets' 9-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Alonso said he wanted to design hats the Mets could wear on the field, but that idea was rejected by Major League Baseball, which hasn't allowed the Mets to wear first responder hats during games since 2001."I think it's kind of sad that first game back, they've kind of shot it down every single year since," Alonso said. "It's real unfortunate. So a way to kind of get around that was the cleats."Alonso said he went around the Mets locker room and collected shoe sizes and preferred... [More]

SEATTLE (AP) — Cincinnati Reds right-hander Sonny Gray lost a no-hit bid in the seventh inning when Seattle Mariners rookie Kyle Lewis hit a three-run homer Wednesday night.Gray hit a batter, issued a walk and got one out in the seventh before Lewis hit a drive out to right-center. Lewis also connected to end Reds righty Trevor Bauer's no-hit bid Tuesday night in the fifth inning of the outfielder's major league debut.Gray allowed a single to Daniel Vogelbach before being lifted trailing 3-2. He struck out nine, walked three, hit two batters and allowed two hits on 111 pitches.Seattle has already been no-hit twice this season, by the Los Angeles Angels on July 12 and the Houston Astros on Aug. 3. No club has ever been no-hit three times.Dee Gordon nearly had a hit in the third inning when he bounced a comebacker off the back of Gray's knee, but Gray calmly scooped up the ball and got the out. Phillip Ervin also tracked down a hard-hit ball by rookie Kyle Lewis in the right-center field gap in the fifth. The Reds turned a first-inning double play and picked off Donnie Walton trying to steal after an eight-pitch walk in the third. It was the second night in a row the Mariners failed to get a hit through five innings against the Reds.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Major League Baseball hitters have punctuated a power-packed year by shattering the record for most home runs in a season.Jonathan Villar of the Baltimore Orioles connected Wednesday night for the 6,106th homer. That topped the mark of 6,105 set in 2017.There are plenty more to come, too — the record was broken with 18 days left in the regular season. The rise in home runs during recent seasons has been tied to changes in the baseballs that have made them fly farther.Villar's three-run shot off Caleb Ferguson of the Los Angeles Dodgers at Camden Yards was the 22nd home run of the night. It was Villar's career-high 21st homer."Somebody told me after the homer. That's unbelievable," Villar said. "That's impressive for me, not for me, it's for the team because we hit it here. That's awesome. They put the bat in the Hall of Fame. I'm excited for that."The Orioles have allowed a record 280 homers."The home runs are up everywhere and it's tough to keep the ball in the ballpark. It's tough to... [More]
