Thu Jun 17 202112:37Indians place catcher Austin Hedges on concussion list
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians placed catcher Austin Hedges on the 7-day concussion list prior to Thursday's game against Baltimore. Hedges was hit on the mask by a foul tip Tuesday night and remained in the game. He was removed from Wednesday’s lineup about an hour before first pitch. Hedges also was hit in the helmet by a pitch from Seattle’s Justin Dunn on Friday and was on the ground for several moments. He was able to go to first base but was taken out two innings later. Hedges cleared the concussion tests and returned to the lineup Sunday. He’s batting .144 with three homers and seven RBIs in 35 games. Hedges took over as the Indians' No. 1 catcher after Roberto Pérez broke his right finger. Pérez hasn't played since May 3. "Austin yesterday just didn't feel right," president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said. "He had low energy and wasn't himself in how he felt. We got him assessed last night and he kind of felt OK. He came in again this morning and he feels better, but still not normal so we don't want to take any chances at all.” The Indians purchased the contract of catcher Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Columbus and transferred outfielder Jordan Luplow to the 60-day IL. Luplow has been out with a sprained right ankle and won't be eligible to return until late July. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Tue Jun 1 202122:33Abreu grounds out with bases loaded, Indians hold off Chisox
CLEVELAND (AP) — AL MVP Jose Abreu grounded out with the bases loaded to blunt a ninth-inning rally against Cleveland closer James Karinchak, giving Shane Bieber and the Indians a 6-5 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. Bieber (6-3) allowed two earned runs in seven innings, striking out seven to beat the AL Central-leading White Sox for the fifth straight time. The reigning Cy Young winner is 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in three starts against Chicago this season. “All in all, I was pretty happy with the way I pitched,” Bieber said. “I had to settle in and not let them get the best of me. So did James at the end, and down the road, these kind of outings can be beneficial for a young pitcher.” Down 6-3 in the ninth, Chicago scored twice as Zack Collins and Nick Madrigal hit RBI singles off Karinchak. A walk to Yoán Moncada loaded the bases for Abreu, who grounded out to shortstop to give Karinchak his seventh save. “Abreu is probably the last guy you want up there in that situation,”... [More]

Fri May 28 202116:54Indians place OF Lulow on injured list with ankle issue
CLEVELAND (AP) — Indians outfielder Jordan Luplow was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained left ankle. Luplow has been dealing with an ankle issue since training camp, and continued soreness and swelling over the past few days forced the Indians to make the move on Friday before opening a three-game series against Toronto. Indians manager Terry Francona said Luplow underwent an MRI to evaluate the injury. “We’re trying to figure it out,” Francona said. "I think it’s in a little different area or examining different from spring training. We’re trying to, obviously, find out what’s going on there. Ultimately what matters is if something’s bothering the player and he can’t play like he wants, you can call it anything you want, but we need to find out. So, that’s what we’re doing.” To take Luplow's roster spot, the Indians recalled right-hander Eli Morgan. He will make his major league debut by starting the series opener against the Blue Jays. Luplow is batting .173 with seven homers and 20 RBIs in 36 games. ___ More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Sun May 23 202113:53Indians' Reyes to miss 5 to 7 weeks with oblique strain
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians’ struggling offense will be without cleanup hitter Franmil Reyes for between five and seven weeks because of an internal oblique strain. Reyes, who leads the team in RBIs and is second in home runs, was placed on the 10-day injured list before Sunday's game against Minnesota. Cleveland's designated hitter left Saturday's game with the injury, which the team initially called a strained left abdominal muscle. “We knew he’d be an IL and miss some time,” manager Terry Francona said Sunday before the team issued the detailed medical update. Reyes was injured while fouling off a pitch in the sixth inning. He underwent an MRI on Sunday morning. Reyes’ absence will be a major setback for the Indians. He has 29 RBIs and 11 homers while batting .257 in 40 games. Reyes and third baseman José Ramírez have carried Cleveland’s offense for most of the season. Reyes hit a two-run homer in the first inning Saturday. He doubled over in pain after taking a swing in the... [More]

Mon May 3 202119:13Indians reinstate Reyes from paternity list, add Ramirez
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Cleveland Indians reinstated designated hitter Franmil Reyes from the paternity list and promoted outfielder Harold Ramirez from the taxi squad Monday before opening a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals. Reyes and his wife, Marian, welcomed their fifth child last week. He's off to a fast start this season, hitting .279 with seven homers — two off the major league lead — and 18 RBIs through 23 games. Ramirez is getting a chance with outfielder Jordan Luplow slowed by a sore left groin that manager Terry Francona hopes will improve in the next day or two. Luplow was hurt over the weekend while running out a ground ball. The Indians made room on the roster for Reyes and Ramirez by optioning outfielder Daniel Johnson to the taxi squad and optioning left-hander Kyle Nelson to Triple-A Columbus. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
