Tue Jul 25 202308:55Ryan Helsley Moved To 60-Day IL
St. Louis Cardinals reliever Ryan Helsley (forearm) was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Monday, according to MLB.com. He now won't be eligible to return until August 11. Helsley has been on the shelf since injuring his forearm at the beginning of June. He's been throwing bullpen sessions and is building up for a rehab assignment before he makes a comeback. Over 25 innings prior to the injury, Helsley pitched to a 3.24 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 32.0% strikeout rate with seven saves. Fantasy managers should stash the 29-year-old in most formats, as he should take back the closer role when he finally does return.

Sat Jul 15 202314:38Ryan Helsley Scheduled To Toss Off The Mound
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Helsley (forearm) is set to throw off the mound Saturday. The right-hander has been on the 15-day injured list because of a forearm injury for around a month but resumed throwing a few weeks ago. He had played well before going on the shelf, amassing a 3.24 ERA with 33 strikeouts and seven saves. Helsley should reclaim his role as the closer upon his return. However, Jordan Hicks could have something to say about that, considering he has seven saves of his own in 2023.

Wed Jun 28 202317:04Ryan Helsley Cleared To Throw
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Helsley (forearm) has been cleared to resume throwing. Now that he has been cleared to throw, he'll likely go through two to three weeks to build his arm back up before he's ready to go on a minor-league rehab assignment consisting of a few outings. It's going to be tough for Helsley to make it back to St. Louis' bullpen before the All-Star break. Once the 28-year-old right-hander is back with the Cardinals, he should take over closing duties, although Jordan Hicks has nailed down five straight chances with Helsley sidelined. Before his forearm strain, Helsley had seven saves, a 3.24 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 33 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched. The Cardinals haven't had many save chances in a disappointing season to this point.

Sun Jun 25 202310:00Ryan Helsley Not Close To Returning
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Helsley (forearm) was eligible to be activated off the injured list on Sunday, but is far from returning at this time, per manager Oli Marmol. The 28-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list on June 12 with a right forearm strain and it appears like his absence extends into July at this point. Fantasy managers stashing the flame-throwing Helsley will have to hang tight in the meantime. Jordan Hicks has perhaps emerged as the interim Cardinals closer after picking up three straight saves last weekend, but Giovanny Gallegos remains in the mix.

Mon Jun 12 202314:00Ryan Helsley Placed On 15-Day Injured List
The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-handed closer Ryan Helsley (forearm) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 10) on Monday with a right-forearm strain and recalled right-hander Jake Woodford from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. Helsley didn't pitch at all over the weekend against the Cincinnati Reds, and now we know why. Fantasy managers may want to prepare for Helsley to miss more than the required 15 days on the IL. Giovanny Gallegos picked up a save on Friday and a hold last Wednesday and should be considered the favorite to see most of the save chances for as long as Helsley is sidelined. Gallegos is only 56% rostered in Yahoo leagues. Although the Cardinals haven't provided many save chances this year, Gallegos is worthy of a pickup for fantasy managers in need of saves.

Thu Jun 8 202309:12Ryan Helsley Earns His Seventh Save Wednesday
St. Louis Cardinals reliever Ryan Helsley picked up save No. 7 on Wednesday when his club defeated the Texas Rangers 1-0. He pitched the ninth inning, recording a pair of strikeouts without giving up any hits or walks. Helsley has been dominant once again, pitching to a 3.24 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with a 32.0% strikeout rate across 25 innings. The saves haven't been there yet for the right-hander, as the Cardinals have gone 26-37 to begin 2023, but more should come and he should continue to lead the team's bullpen.

Mon May 29 202300:50Ryan Helsley Blows Save In Shaky Appearance Sunday
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Helsley took the blown save and the loss on Sunday in a 4-3 loss against the Cleveland Guardians. Helsley didn't have his command in this one, walking two and allowing a walk-off two-run double to Jose Ramirez. It was the flamethrowers fourth loss and fourth blown save of the season. Helsley had been good in May up until this one, going three-for-three in save chances and picking up three wins to only one loss. Still, he now holds a slightly disappointing 3.52 ERA and 1.26 WHIP on the season. He still should see the majority of save opportunities for St. Louis, so there is no need to panic yet.

Wed May 24 202300:19Ryan Helsley Earns Sixth Save Of Season Tuesday
It wasn't smooth, but St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Helsley picked up his sixth save of the season in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Reds. Helsley entered the game to pitch the ninth inning up by three. He got the first two outs on a strikeout and groundout but then allowed a single and back-to-back walks before getting the final out on another groundout. Giovanny Gallegos, who has also seen save opportunities this season, pitched the eighth. Helsley has not been as good as he was last season but has now converted six of nine save opportunities with a 3.00 ERA and 12.00 K/9 rate. It appears that he has the edge over Gallegos for now, but both hold fantasy value.

Thu May 18 202309:15Ryan Helsley Records Save No. 5 On Wednesday
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Ryan Helsley picked up his fifth save of the season on Wednesday when his club defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0. The 28-year-old went 1.1 innings while striking out and walking one batter and allowing one hit. Even though the saves haven't been there yet, Helsley's been dominant once again, posting a 2.55 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with a 31.4% strikeout rate and 8.6% walk rate. Fantasy managers need to keep rolling with the former fifth-round pick and assume more save opportunities are coming as the Cardinals try to improve on their 18-26 record.

Tue May 9 202300:47Ryan Helsley Earns Four-Out Save Monday
St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley picked up his fourth save of the season in Monday's 3-1 win over the Cubs. Helsley came on to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning up by two with two outs and no one on, getting the final out on a fly-out. He stayed on to pitch the ninth, delivering a 1-2-3 inning with no strikeouts. The 28-year-old has pitched well overall but has not been nearly as solid as he was last season. He has now converted four of seven save opportunities with a 3.14 ERA, 10.67 K/9 rate, and 3.14 BB/9 rate. However, he should still have the upper hand on Giovanny Gallegos as long as he can take steps in the positive direction.

Sun May 7 202313:30Ryan Helsley Is Good To Go For Sunday
St. Louis Cardinals reliever Ryan Helsley (knee) is available to pitch in Sunday's game against the Detroit Tigers after not pitching in Saturday's contest with a sore knee. The 28-year-old told reporters that he had some pain in his surgically repaired knee but that it was in a different spot than where he received the cleanup. Either way, he's ready to rock on Sunday should he be called upon. Helsley owns a 3.75 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 16:5 K/BB ratio to go along with three saves over 12 innings.

Sat May 6 202321:20Ryan Helsley Unavailable Saturday Due To Knee Soreness
St. Louis Cardinals reliever Ryan Helsley (knee) was unavailable for Saturday's game against the Detroit Tigers due to knee soreness. According to Cardinals manager Oil Marmol, the knee injury is not considered serious, and the team hopes Helsley will be available to pitch on Sunday. It explains why the 28-year-old did not pitch during Saturday's 6-5 extra-inning loss. He is considered day-to-day for now. Helsley is 2-for-3 in save opportunities with a 3.75 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and a 16:5 K: BB across 12 innings in 2023. Giovanny Gallegos will handle closing duties for the Cardinals if Helsley misses any more time.

Wed Apr 12 202308:04Ryan Helsley Completes His Second Save Tuesday
St. Louis Cardinals reliever Ryan Helsley earned his second save of the season on Tuesday when he threw a clean ninth inning of the 9-6 win over the Colorado Rockies. He allowed a pair of hits but also managed two punchouts and no walks. The dominant right-hander is running a 3.86 ERA with six strikeouts and a 1.71 WHIP across 4.2 innings, but that's nowhere near Helsley's 2022 numbers. Last year he pitched to a 1.25 ERA, 39.5% strikeout rate, and 0.74 WHIP with 19 saves. Helsley likely won't repeat that, but he has the talent to give fantasy managers tons of value in four categories as the Cardinals closer.

Sat Apr 1 202322:11Ryan Helsley Bounces Back Saturday, Secures First Save In 2023
St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Ryan Helsley allowed two hits while striking out two across 1 2/3 innings to earn the save in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. He entered the eighth inning with runners on first and second base. The 28-year-old recorded two outs and escaped the eighth-inning jam. During the ninth frame, he allowed hits to Kevin Kiermaier and Bo Bichette before getting Daulton Varsho to pop out to seal the Cardinals' victory. It was his first save of the season. Helsley bounced back on Saturday after blowing the save and taking the loss on Thursday after allowing two runs on two hits and one walk in the Opening Day loss to the Blue Jays. Helsley is the Cardinals' primary closer and is a must-start in all league formats.

Fri Mar 31 202300:33Ryan Helsley Blows First Save Opportunity Of 2023
St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Helsley had a tough outing to open his season, blowing a save opportunity and taking the loss against the Toronto Blue Jays. Helsley allowed two runs on two hits and a walk, and he didn't strike out a batter. Helsley's command wasn't up to par in this one, as he was frequently missing his spots. That was a bit of a concern with Helsley, who, outside of last season, has had some control issues in the past. Regardless, it will take more than one bad outing for him to lose the closer role that he grabbed a hold of during his breakout 2022 campaign.

Thu Feb 16 202318:05Ryan Helsley Loses Arbitration Case Against Cardinals
St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley lost his salary arbitration case on Thursday, according to a source. He will make $2.15 million in 2023 instead of the $3 million that he filed for. Helsley will still be St. Louis' primary closer in 2023 after the All-Star had a career-best 1.25 ERA (2.34 FIP), 0.74 WHIP, career-high 19 saves and 94 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings over 54 appearances out of the bullpen. The 28-year-old right-hander ended the season on a sour note in the playoffs against the Philadelphia Phillies in the wild-card round, but that shouldn't persuade fantasy managers to avoid him this season. Helsey enters the 2023 campaign as RotoBaller's No. 10 fantasy closer.

Sat Oct 8 202211:42Ryan Helsley Going For MRI Exam
St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley (finger) went to get an MRI exam on the jammed middle finger of his pitching hand after he left his appearance in the Game 1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Wild-Card Series on Friday. Manager Oliver Marmol said Helsley reported a lack of feeling in his finger after he hit Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm to force in a run with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. Helsey initially jammed his finger in his final regular season appearance earlier this week, and apparently he's not past the issue. We'll have a better idea on his availability for the rest of the series this weekend after his MRI results come back, but there's a pretty good chance he won't be available for Game 2 on Saturday. If another save situation arises for the Cards, it'll likely be Giovanny Gallegos that gets the call out of the bullpen.

Fri Oct 7 202217:37Ryan Helsley Leaves Friday's Game With Trainer
St. Louis Cardinals right-handed pitcher Ryan Helsley (finger) was removed from their game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. Helsley was in for a five-out save, but fell apart in the ninth, giving up a hit and walking two before hitting a batter to allow a run. He was then pulled from the game after being visited by a trainer, who appeared to be looking at the finger Helsley had been having problems with the past week. The Cardinals ended up giving up six runs in the inning, four of which were charged to Helsley. This isn't good news for the fireballer, and there is a good chance he can't pitch again in this series. Stay tuned for updates on Helsley's status.

Thu Oct 6 202218:37Ryan Helsley On The Team's Wild-Card Roster
St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley (finger) didn't feel pain during his side session on Thursday and has been included on the Wild-Card roster for this weekend's series against the Philadelphia Phillies in St. Louis. It's great news for the Cardinals bullpen this weekend, and Helsley should continue to operate as St. Louis' closer in the late innings. He injured the middle finger on his right hand fielding a ball in the regular season finale on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, but thankfully it wasn't a serious injury. Helsley was a perfect 7-for-7 on his save chances to close out the regular season, and he finished the year with a tidy 1.25 ERA, 0.74 WHIP, 19 saves and 94 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings.

Thu Oct 6 202218:08Ryan Helsley Testing His Finger Thursday
St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley (finger), who suffered a jammed middle finger on his right hand in the regular season finale on Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, is scheduled to throw during Thursday's workout to test his grip on the baseball. He was examined by the team's medical staff Thursday morning. Hopefully for the Cardinals, the 28-year-old reliever will get cleared to play in the Wild-Card Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, which begins on Friday in St. Louis. If Helsley isn't available on Friday or doesn't make the Wild-Card roster at all, Giovanny Gallegos would likely be the team's first option to close out any games this weekend against the Phillies.
