Wed Jun 29 202216:09Tommy Edman Absent From Wednesday's Lineup
St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Tommy Edman is getting the day off on Wednesday as the team takes on right-hander Sandy Alcantara and the Miami Marlins. Edmundo Sosa will be covering shortstop for the game while Brendan Donovan will be hitting out of Edman's usual leadoff spot. Edman is currently on pace to have his best all-around season in the majors by a distant margin. Over 75 games, he's slashing .272/.342/.403 with seven home runs, 19 stolen bases, 32 RBI and 58 runs. He has maintained career-highs in average exit velocity (88.8 mph), hard-hit rate (37.7%) and barrel rate (6.7%).

Tue Jun 14 202211:08Tommy Edman Resting In Game 1
St. Louis Cardinals middle infielder Tommy Edman will sit out of Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Edman has been great for fantasy managers this year with a .278/.355/.418 slash line with six home runs, 25 RBI, 49 runs scored and a league-high 15 stolen bases in 266 plate appearances over 61 games. Fantasy managers should expect him to return to the starting lineup for Game 2. Edmundo Sosa is starting at shortstop and will hit ninth in Game 1 against Pirates right-hander JT Brubaker. But it will be rookie Brendan Donovan, who is in right field and hitting leadoff, that will be the much more attractive DFS piece on Tuesday.

Wed Jun 1 202211:55Tommy Edman Cools Off With 0-for-5 Performance
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Tommy Edman went 0-for-5 on Tuesday night, as the Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 in 10 innings for their eighth win in their last 10 games. Edman, who got off to a fast start in April by slashing .300/.395/.486, saw himself cool off considerably in May. Overall, Edman finished May hitting .259/.323/.371 with one home run, 11 RBI and 10 runs. So far this season, Edman is struggling facing breaking balls in particular, having just an xBA of .199 against breaking balls on 159 pitches in 2022. Edman also is showcasing a 27.6% whiff rate on breaking balls this season. For now, fantasy managers will probably feel more comfortable with Edman on their benches in standard leagues, rather than in their everyday lineups.

Thu May 19 202223:02Tommy Edman Sliding Over To Shortstop
St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that second baseman Tommy Edman will slide over to shortstop to make room for prospect Nolan Gorman, who will be called up from the minors before Friday's game. Brendan Donovan has earned at-bats by going 10-for-34 with a homer, five RBI and a steal in just 19 games, but it could be more difficult for the Cards to get him regular at-bats now. He could split time in left field with rookie Juan Yepez. Edman has started at second in 35 of 37 games for St. Louis, and he is having a nice season with a .269/.367/.431 slash line with four home runs, 18 RBI, 25 runs scored and a league-leading nine stolen bases so far while also moving to the leadoff spot. His fantasy stock is very high right now.

Thu May 19 202211:44Edmundo Sosa Out, Tommy Edman Back In Thursday
St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Edmundo Sosa (ankle) is not in the starting lineup on Thursday against the New York Mets. Sosa left the game early on Wednesday with an ankle injury. He got the start at the 6 with Tommy Edman battling a sore calf, but Edman is at second base and batting leadoff on Thursday against Mets right-hander Chris Bassitt. Brendan Donovan is starting at shortstop and is hitting in the two-hole. Sosa is hitting just .220 with no home runs, one RBI and a stolen base in 16 games this year, and he's mostly middle infield depth with both Edman and Donovan healthy. Edman is hitting .269 with four home runs, 18 RBI, 25 runs scored and a league-high nine stolen bases this year, so he needs to be returned to all starting fantasy lineups.

Wed May 18 202218:52Tommy Edman To Sit Out Wednesday
St. Louis Cardinals infielder Tommy Edman (calf) is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the New York Mets. He was hit by a pitch during Tuesday's game and is still dealing with some calf soreness. Fantasy managers shouldn't be too worried as Edman is expected to avoid a trip to the injured list. He might even be available off the bench during Wednesday's contest. Brendan Donovan will bat leadoff and play second base against righty Max Scherzer on Wednesday.

Tue May 3 202213:31Tommy Edman Back In Tuesday's Lineup
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Tommy Edman (hip) is back at second base and is leading off on Tuesday against Kansas City Royals right-hander Brad Keller. Edman experienced left hip flexor soreness in the game on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks and was held out of the game on Monday as a result. The 26-year-old will wind up missing just one game, and fantasy managers should be looking to get him back into their lineups. He has benefitted from Dylan Carlson's struggles atop the batting order and is more attractive in all fantasy leagues hitting at the top of the Cardinals lineup. Edman is 22-for-72 with three home runs, 11 RBI, 13 runs scored and five RBI in his first 21 games of the season.

Mon May 2 202211:06Tommy Edman Out Against Royals
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Tommy Edman (hip) is not in the starting lineup on Monday against the Kansas City Royals. Edman left the game early on Sunday due to a sore left hip flexor, and he's considered day-to-day. This will be the 26-year-old's first game off of the season. Edman has swung a hot bat through the first month of the season and has been bumped to the leadoff spot due to the struggles of Dylan Carlson. In his first 21 games, Edman is hitting .306 with three home runs, 11 RBI, 13 runs scored and five stolen bases in 85 plate appearances. Hopefully he'll be able to return to the lineup in a day or two. Harrison Bader is taking over leadoff duties on Monday against Royals right-hander Zack Greinke.

Sun May 1 202219:57Tommy Edman Should Return Soon
St. Louis Cardinals infielder Tommy Edman (groin) is hopeful to play within the next day or two. He was forced to exit early during Sunday's game due a groin issue. He mentioned that he has been feeling tightness in his hip over the last few days. Hopefully, Edman can take a few days off and get back to 100 percent. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day. Check back on Monday to see if Edman rejoins the lineup.

Fri Apr 29 202200:48Tommy Edman Scores Three Times In Victory
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Tommy Edman lived up to the task of the leadoff hitter by scoring three times in his club's 8-3 win over the Diamondbacks on Thursday. He went 2-for-3 at the dish with a pair of run-scoring singles and a walk to up his slash line to .323/.425/.532 with three homers, 12 runs, 11 RBI, and four steals through 18 games. Edman began the season hitting in the bottom half of the Cards lineup, but has moved back up to the top of the lineup card due to a minor Dylan Carlson injury and with the strong play of his own. Manager Oliver Marmol suggested that Carlson will inevitably return to the leadoff spot despite his .203/.260/,275 line, but Edman has a lengthier track record as a leadoff man, so it's a situation to monitor moving forward for both of their 2022 fantasy outlooks.

Tue Apr 12 202218:45Tommy Edman Hitting Sixth On Tuesday
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Tommy Edman is slotting in at No. 6 in the team's batting order for Tuesday night's game against Daniel Lynch and the Kansas City Royals. Edman, who was the team's primary leadoff hitter last season, batted ninth in each of the team's first three games this year. He had a strong opening series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, going 3-for-9 with a home run and two walks, so the team may be rewarding him by moving him up in the lineup. Edman's fantasy value in 2021 came from his 30 stolen bases and 91 runs scored. He'll struggle to reach anything close to 91 runs when he's hitting near or at the bottom of the lineup. We'll see if he can secure a more prime lineup spot or if he can salvage his fantasy value by continuing to be active on the base paths.

Sun Apr 3 202211:53Tommy Edman Just 1-For-20 This Spring
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Tommy Edman has had a rough Spring Training so far. Over seven games and 20 at-bats, he's recorded just one hit and no walks while striking out three times. The 26-year-old was the Cardinals' primary leadoff hitter in 2021. However, there has been some speculation that Dylan Carlson could be in the mix for leadoff hitting duties this year. While Edman is great at avoiding strikeouts (13.7% strikeout rate last year) and is a top-notch base stealer (30 stolen bases in 2021), he had an on-base percentage of just .308 last season. Carlson, meanwhile, had a .343 OBP. Edman's stolen base prowess makes him a worthy mid-round target in roto and head-to-head categories leagues, but in points leagues, you can allow him to drop into the late rounds.

Thu Oct 7 202101:30Tommy Edman Gets Three Hits In The Wild Card Game
St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman was the best offensive player in the Cardinals lineup in the National League Wild Card Game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Batting first, Edman went 3-for-5 with three singles, scoring the only Cardinals run of the game. St. Louis ended up with just five hits, so Edman had 60 percent of the Cardinals offense in this one. St. Louis should remain solid offensively next season, and if Edman stays near the top of the lineup, she should once again be a solid multi-category fantasy contributor.

Sun Aug 29 202103:45Tommy Edman Has Four Hits On Saturday
St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman was excellent at the plate on Saturday, going 4-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored in a lopsided 13-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Edman had three singles and a double out of the leadoff spot in the Cardinals order and raised his batting average to .265 and his OPS to .706. Edman was off to an amazing start earlier this season but has definitely cooled off lately. Maybe this four-hit performance will be the start of another hot streak.

Thu Aug 26 202108:49Tommy Edman Tallies Two Hits And Steals A Base
St. Louis Cardinals second baseman/outfielder Tommy Edman had a solid game in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. He went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles and a stolen base. The steal was his second in as many games and his 21st of the year. The Cardinals leadoff hitter has had a decent year overall. Through 123 games, he's slashing .259/.309/.379 with seven home runs, 36 RBI and 65 runs. His 12.9% strikeout rate ranks in the 97th percentile and he has a .274 xBA, which ranks in the 82nd percentile. However, his power numbers are nowhere to be found as his 4.2% barrel rate and 35.3% hard-hit rate rank in the bottom 15% and 25% of the league, respectively.

Thu Aug 5 202115:45Tommy Edman Absent From Thursday’s Lineup
St. Louis Cardinals infielder Tommy Edman isn't starting in Thursday's game against the Atlanta Braves. He will get the day off after hitting .188 (3-for-16) with two stolen bases over his last five games. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups accordingly. Matt Carpenter is batting fifth and starting at second base for Edman on Thursday. Carpenter is slashing .191/.319/.312 with three home runs and 20 RBI across 188 plate appearances in 2021. The 35-year-old isn't a recommended streaming option for Thursday's main slate and can be left on the waiver wire in most league formats.

Sat Jul 31 202102:55Joey Votto homers for 7th straight game, 1 shy of MLB record
NEW YORK (AP) — Joey Votto homered for the seventh straight game, one shy of a major league record, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 6-2 on Friday night. Jonathan India went deep twice for the Reds, including a leadoff shot that came on Carlos Carrasco’s first pitch with the Mets. Acquired from Cleveland in January, the veteran right-hander finally made his New York debut after recovering from a hamstring injury. It was an up-and-down day for the Mets, who made a big deal to get Javier Báez from the Chicago Cubs before baseball’s trade deadline — and then revealed injured ace Jacob deGrom will be shut down for two more weeks because of inflammation in his pitching elbow, making it unlikely he’ll rejoin the NL East leaders before September. Báez was acquired from the Cubs along with right-hander Trevor Williams for outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Mets’ first-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft. Báez is expected to join the Mets on Saturday and will play shortstop... [More]
