Nieuwenhuis, sidelined since August 2, started his rehab stint on Thursday. The Mets may opt to keep Nieuwenhuis on the disabled list and his rehab stint until the rosters expand September 1.

Nieuwenhuis was placed on the 15-day DL on Sunday due to a pinched nerve.

Nieuwenhuis hadn't played in any of the Mets' last three games due to the issue, which wasn't expected to improve much in the next few days. The Mets will bring back Michael Conforto from Triple-A Las Vegas to provide some depth in the outfield while Nieuwenhuis is out.

The Mets are waiting for word on Nieuwenhuis' health before determining a course of action regarding the roster. Even if he does stick around, Nieuwenhuis will likely see less playing time moving forward following the addition of Yoenis Cespedes at the trade deadline.

Nieuwenhuis is out of the lineup Thursday against the Padres.

Nieuwenhuis has drawn the start in center field in four straight contests, but will give way to Juan Lagares for the afternoon contest. A four-hit performance last Saturday may have earned Nieuwenhuis some playing time in the short term, but he's gone 1-for-9 at the dish since then and is still only batting .188 on the season.
