Thu May 24 201800:14Plutko, Miller pitch Indians past Cubs 1-0
CHICAGO (AP) — Adam Plutko was nervous. Not about making his second major league start, really. It was all about stepping to the plate.Once that was over, everything fell into place.Plutko carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Andrew Miller provided stellar relief work, helping the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago Cubs 1-0 on Wednesday night."We know when (Plutko) commands everything, he can be pretty good," manager Terry Francona said. "But on a night when he didn't command real well, he still did pretty damn good."Plutko (2-0) was promoted from Triple-A Columbus to replace the struggling Josh Tomlin in Cleveland's rotation. The right-hander issued each of his four walks in the first two innings, but settled down after a successful sacrifice in the third in his first at-bat since he was a junior in high school in 2009."I was really nervous to hit, and so as soon as I got that bunt down in the third, I felt like a lot more calm and everything was a lot better," he said.Plutko's... Sun Mar 25 201816:39Indians OF Michael Brantley starting season on disabled list
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — The Cleveland Indians will start the season missing Michael Brantley.Still recovering from offseason surgery on his right ankle, Brantley is being placed on the disabled list as the team continues to take a cautious and deliberate approach with the two-time All-Star outfielder.Brantley, who has been limited to 101 games over the past two seasons because of injuries, only began playing in exhibition games a few days ago. While he has made steady improvement, Brantley, who homered in his first at-bat of the spring, is not quite ready to play in a major league game."He's doing great. I just think, after we put our heads together, it would be good for him," manager Terry Francona said Sunday. "He's just not quite ready maybe to carry enough of the load. There's no setback or anything like that."If anyone understands the road to recovery can be arduous, it's Brantley, who has battled injuries the last two years. He bounced back last season after playing in just 11 games... Davis has filled a need and the Indians are thrilled to have him around."Raj looks like Raj," Francona said. "He does an amazing job at age 37 getting to his full speed. ... We had to play him quite a bit because we wanted to get a good look at him. It's a pretty good test for a 37-year old in spring training. He bounced back really well. I think he has the freedom to be himself. That's a good thing. We all feel that he has the chance to help us win."Davis cemented his name... [More]

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Michael Brantley had no problem getting back in the swing of things Wednesday night.Brantley homered on his first swing of spring training, making a promising return to the Cleveland Indians' lineup following surgery in October on his right ankle. The 30-year-old outfielder turned around a pitch from Kansas City's Jason Hammel and knocked it onto the pavilion roof in right field in the second inning. He was later called out on strikes and flew out to left field before being replaced in left field prior to the sixth inning.Brantley's first spring start was delayed by injury for the third straight season. Last spring, he was held out of Cactus League action until March 20 following biceps surgery the previous August.Brantley batted .299 with nine homers and 52 RBIs in 90 games last year before being shut down with the ankle injury. GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Once he overcame some anxiety, Yonder Alonso started swinging for the fences. And clearing them.Hoping to improve his power statistics, Alonso altered his swing last season and the baseball began to fly. After hitting just 39 home runs in his first seven major league seasons, Alonso connected for 28 in 142 games for Oakland and Seattle. The Indians are counting on his surge to continue.Following first baseman Carlos Santana's departure as a free agent to Philadelphia, the Indians were left with a run-producing void in their lineup and signed the 30-year-old Alonso, who became something of a poster boy for MLB's new elevation trend.Alonso implemented a higher leg kick, used a bigger upper cut and concentrated on hitting the ball harder. And, as it turned out, farther."I tell guys, 'Look at me,'" said Alonso, who made his first All-Star appearance last season while with the Athletics. "I was so scared of change. Then I changed. It worked. I'm still learning that change... [More]
