Wed May 18 202200:53Aroldis Chapman Shaky Again, Records Ninth Save
New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman recorded his ninth save of the season despite surrendering three hits and an earned run while striking out one during a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. In May, the seven-time All-Star has struggled, posting a 6.75 ERA, 2.25 WHIP, three walks, and nine hits with four strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings. Despite allowing runs in four straight games, the left-hander has yet to blow a save through nine chances. While Chapman doesn't appear to be in danger of losing his role as closer, it is worth noting the Cuban is boasting a 4.42 xERA, 25% K-rate, and 16.1% BB rate all career-worsts to start the 2022 campaign.

Wed Apr 20 202200:45Aroldis Chapman Earns Second Save Of Season Tuesday
New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman picked up his second save of the season in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Tigers. Chapman came on to pitch the ninth inning up by two and recorded a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. The flame-thrower has now converted both of his save opportunities this season and has a 0.00 ERA and seven strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings pitched, but he has also walked four. Walks were also an issue for Chapman last season, but he should continue to see the majority of save opportunities for the Yankees as long as the walks don't become too big of a hindrance to his overall performance.

Fri Apr 15 202200:08Michael King Bails Out Aroldis Chapman For First Save
New York Yankees reliever Michael King picked up his first save of the season on Thursday, helping his club defeat the Blue Jays 3-0 in the series finale. Aroldis Chapman began the ninth inning, but he was pulled after issuing three-straight walks to begin the frame and tossing just four of his 16 pitches for strikes. Manager Aaron Boone was quicker with the hook than he has been in previous seasons, and King didn't disappoint his skipper by striking out George Springer on three pitches before getting Bo Bichette to line out into a double play. Chapman's role as closer could be slipping from his grasp as saves in New York could come from multiple arms the rest of the way this season.

Thu Mar 24 202222:15Aroldis Chapman Could Be Used In Non-Save Situations
New York Yankees pitcher Aroldis Chapman could be used more in the eighth inning this season to keep the closer sharp during lengthier periods between save chances. According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, getting Chapman into the eighth inning of a tight game is preferable to using him in low-adrenaline blowouts or having the lefty throw a post-game bullpen to get work in. "It will serve him well at times and protect other guys at times," Boone said. "It will help us as a staff and keep Aroldis more regular rather than let him get to five, six days without pitching." The 34-year-old is the Yankees' primary closer after converting 30-of-34 saves while posting a 3.36 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 97 strikeouts over 56 1/3 innings in 2021. The extra usage in the eighth inning shouldn't affect Chapman's fantasy value too much as he remains a top-10 fantasy closer heading into 2022 drafts.

Mon Sep 27 202110:05Aroldis Chapman Records 30th Save
New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman notched his 30th save of the season in Sunday's win over the Red Sox. Chapman had to work a bit, as he needed 20 pitches to navigate the ninth inning, though he got a five-pitch strikeout to end the game. The hard-throwing lefty became just the ninth reliever in baseball to reach the 30-save mark this season. Chapman has posted a 2.70 ERA with a 38.4 percent strikeout rate since the start of August. The veteran closer remains a strong relief option as fantasy managers head into their final matchups.

Thu Sep 16 202111:42Aroldis Chapman Picks Up 27th Save
New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman notched his 27th save of the year in Wednesday's victory over the Orioles. It was one of Chapman's easiest innings of the year, as he needed just eight pitches, seven of which went for strikes en route to a pair of punchouts. The hard-throwing lefty has been excellent over his last four appearances, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless frames while racking up seven strikeouts compared to just one walk. It hasn't always been pretty for Chapman this year, but he ranks 10th in saves and fifth in strikeout rate, making him a dependable fantasy closer at the most important time of the year in fantasy baseball.

Thu Sep 2 202111:22Aroldis Chapman Picks Up 25th Save
New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman notched his 25th save of the season in Wednesday's win over the Angels. Chapman needed just 11 pitches to work an easy ninth, firing eight for strikes and picking up a strikeout in the process. The lefty has righted the ship since the league's crackdown on sticky substances, as he endured an awful June but has rebounded since, allowing just six runs over his last 15 1/3 innings with a 24:12 strikeout-to-walk ratio and nine saves. Chapman remains a top-10 fantasy closer as the regular season shifts to the final month.

Fri Aug 27 202110:02Aroldis Chapman Picks Up 300th Career Save
New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman notched his 24th save of the year in Thursday's victory over the Athletics. Chapman worked his first save opportunity since returning from the injured list, firing eight of 13 pitches for strikes and notching one punchout en route to picking up the save, the 300th of his career. Chapman went with an interesting approach Thursday, throwing 12 fastballs and one splitter, with no sliders sprinkled in. He took some heat off the fastball but located it well, which is a good sign after some control issues popped up earlier this season. Chapman should be expected to see the bulk of New York's save chances the rest of the way, making him a solid fantasy closer option.

Fri Aug 27 202108:45Aroldis Chapman Converts His 300th Career Save
New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman closed out the team's 7-6 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday to earn his 24th save of the year and the 300th save of his career. The win was the Yankees' 12th in a row and it came in dramatic fashion as Aaron Judge broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth before Chapman shut the door in the bottom of the ninth. Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out one. It was his first save since he was activated from the 10-day injured list last week. Chapman hasn't blown a save since July 4. He has a 3.77 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP on the year.

Wed Aug 18 202119:54Aroldis Chapman Activated From Injured List Wednesday
New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (elbow) was activated from the 10-day injured list on Wednesday, the team announced on Twitter. Chapman was out for just over the minimum stay, as he landed on the injured list on August 7 with left elbow inflammation. Despite posting career-worsts with a 3.63 ERA and 1.336 WHIP over 39 2/3 innings of work this season, Chapman has still managed to be one of the top closers in fantasy with 23 saves and a 40 percent strikeout rate. Managers should slot him back into their active lineups right away.

Sat Aug 7 202112:34Aroldis Chapman Placed On 10-Day Injured List With Elbow Inflammation
New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (elbow) was placed on the 10-day injured list with left elbow inflammation Saturday. Chapman endured a shaky month of June but has since rebounded, allowing just one run while converting all seven save chances since July 20. The veteran experienced a slight dip in velocity in his last appearance on Thursday, which is perhaps related to the issue with his throwing elbow. It's undoubtedly a blow to the Yankee bullpen, though the club has several arms that can step up, like Chad Green, Jonathan Loaisiga, and Zack Britton. Expect the team to go with some combination of those three in the ninth during Chapman's absence, with Green and Loaisiga the most appealing options for fantasy.

Fri Aug 6 202109:00Aroldis Chapman Picks Up 23rd Save
New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman notched his 23rd save of the season in Thursday's win over the Mariners. Chapman did not make it easy on fantasy managers, needing 30 pitches to navigate the frame after putting the tying runs on base following a walk and a hit. He locked down the save opportunity after inducing a long fly ball to left field. While anything but smooth at times, Chapman has been much better since being reinstalled as the club's closer, going a perfect 7-for-7 in save chances. He should continue to see such opportunities pitching for a Yankee team that is slowly starting to string some wins together.

Sun Aug 1 202117:57Aroldis Chapman Records 22nd Save
New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman picked up his 22nd save of the season in Sunday's win over the Marlins. Chapman fired 10 of 17 pitches for strikes, inducing three whiffs en route to a pair of strikeouts. The 33-year-old wasn't available during Saturday's game but has now converted each of his last six save opportunities, yielding just one run over his last seven innings while recording a 13:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Some of Chapman's underlying numbers spell trouble, though the results he's putting together right now are hard to argue with. He has fallen down the ranks, but Chapman should still be viewed as a top-10 closer.

Sat Jul 31 202111:44Aroldis Chapman Notches 21st Save
New York Yankees relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman picked up his fifth straight save in Friday's victory over Miami. Chapman didn't allow a baserunner for the first time in six appearances, recording a strikeout en route to shutting the door on the Marlins. He's been much better in July, lowering his season ERA by nearly a run while maintaining a strong strikeout rate. Still, his bloated walk rate and barrel rate suggest he's still mistake-prone, even in this improved version of his game. Chapman is an obvious hold as the closer for a contending team, but his value is certainly on shakier ground than it was earlier in the year.

Sat Jul 31 202102:55Joey Votto homers for 7th straight game, 1 shy of MLB record
NEW YORK (AP) — Joey Votto homered for the seventh straight game, one shy of a major league record, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 6-2 on Friday night. Jonathan India went deep twice for the Reds, including a leadoff shot that came on Carlos Carrasco’s first pitch with the Mets. Acquired from Cleveland in January, the veteran right-hander finally made his New York debut after recovering from a hamstring injury. It was an up-and-down day for the Mets, who made a big deal to get Javier Báez from the Chicago Cubs before baseball’s trade deadline — and then revealed injured ace Jacob deGrom will be shut down for two more weeks because of inflammation in his pitching elbow, making it unlikely he’ll rejoin the NL East leaders before September. Báez was acquired from the Cubs along with right-hander Trevor Williams for outfield prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong, the Mets’ first-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft. Báez is expected to join the Mets on Saturday and will play shortstop... [More]
