Thu Feb 13 202016:58Now with Toronto, Ryu ready to be the ace
DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Hyun-Jin Ryu is now the clear ace of a major league rotation — with all the pressure and responsibility that comes with that.“We win games by having all the players put in their efforts,” Ryu said through a translator Thursday. “At the same time, I do realize the expectation and the weight that comes with this kind of contract and what the Blue Jays wanted, and I know exactly what the Blue Jays want from me.”What Toronto needs is some stability in its rotation. The Blue Jays used 21 different starters last year, then made several additions in the offseason. Ryu was the most prominent acquisition, signing a four-year, $80 million contract after finishing second in the National League Cy Young Award vote with the Los Angeles Dodgers.Ryu was the only NL pitcher to receive a first-place vote for the Cy Young besides winner Jacob deGrom, but pitching in Los Angeles, it was easy for the left-hander to be overshadowed by the likes of Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler. Sat Jan 25 202019:17Several Dodgers go public, peeved by Astros' cheating scam
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers would rather earn a World Series trophy on their own than accept any scraps from the Houston Astros or Boston Red Sox, the teams that beat them in 2017 and '18.Despite being eager to focus on the upcoming season, several Dodgers publicly for the first time expressed annoyance at the Astros for the sign-stealing system used during the 2017 season, when Houston beat them in seven games in the World Series.“They cheated and they got away with it,” utilityman Kiké Hernández said Saturday during the team's annual FanFest outside Dodger Stadium. “I don't think it hurts more now than it did three years ago when we lost the Series.”Hernández said the Dodgers “had our doubts” about the Astros in 2017.“Everybody warned us. A lot of people told us to worry about them,” Hernández said. “We just thought it was just rumors, but I guess not.”Two weeks ago, Major League Baseball released the findings of its investigation, which concluded the Astros used a center-field... Tue Jan 14 202020:03Column: Astros get the punishment, Dodgers pay the price
AJ Hinch won’t be managing in the big leagues any time soon, if at all. Alex Cora joined him Tuesday in the unemployment line, and it’s hard to believe anyone will ever give him another job that involves being a leader of men.The punishments fit the crime, and for that baseball commissioner Rob Manfred deserves a pat on the back. Give another one to Astros owner Jim Crane, who did his part to clean up an increasingly smelly mess in Houston by immediately firing both his manager and general manager. But that doesn’t bring real justice. It can’t.Not to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are now at 32 years and counting without a World Series title. Not to Clayton Kershaw, whose postseason failings were magnified in Game 5 at Minute Maid Park when the Dodgers ace was raked for six runs and didn’t make it out of the fifth inning. And certainly not to Yu Darvish, whose reputation — and nearly his career — got trashed when he was routed by the Astros in two games of the 2017 World Series.Yes, the official... Tue Dec 24 201917:27Curt Flood set off the free-agent revolution 50 years ago
NEW YORK (AP) — Curt Flood set off the free-agent revolution 50 years ago Tuesday with a 128-word letter to baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, two paragraphs that pretty much ended the career of a World Series champion regarded as among the sport's stars but united a union behind his cause.St. Louis had traded the All-Star center fielder to Philadelphia just after the 1969 season. Flood broke with the sport's culture of conformity and refused to accept the Cardinals' right to deal him, becoming a pioneer and a pariah. After weeks of discussions with the Major League Baseball Players Association, Flood began the union's equivalent of Lexington and Concord, challenging the reserve clause in first shot of a labor war that would consume the sport for more than a quarter-century."After 12 years in the major leagues, I do not feel that I am a piece of property to be bought and sold irrespective of my wishes," Flood wrote in his Dec. 24 missive. "I believe that any system which produces that result... [More]

Tue Dec 10 201912:10Giants seek pitching, but few signs Bumgarner returning
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants would sure like to add a pitcher at this week's winter meetings. It just might not be Madison Bumgarner.San Francisco president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi plans to meet with agents for the free agent left-hander, but there are few signs the Giants are ready to commit big money to him for the long haul. “We're in contact with his representatives and expect to meet with them here,” Zaidi said Monday. “We are in touch with them. We will meet with them in person at some point here."Bumgarner was perhaps the biggest reason San Francisco won a third World Series over five years in 2014 and earned MVP honors from the Fall Classic. He hasn't been quite so dominant since. The 30-year-old may seek a deal similar to Zack Wheeler, who finalized a $118 million, five-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. “I would expect us to add at least one starting pitcher here and by here I don't mean necessarily in San Diego, but there's a good chance...
