The .318 average places Adames second among hitters at all levels in the Rockies' minor-league system, trailing only High-A Modesto's Raimel Tapia (.328). Adames, who entered the season with a reputation as a glove-first player, has found success at the dish by trimming his strikeout rate to a measly 11.2 percent and has shown more power than anticipated. He's still not viewed as a premium prospect, but he could factor into the conversation for a utility infield role with the big club later at some point in the second half.

To an extent, Adames has been able to rewrite the narrative that he's a glove-only prospect, as his .148 ISO is a higher mark than he's posted at any level of the minors where he's received at least 100 plate appearances. Even so, Adames remains a more accomplished defender than an offensive threat, which will likely limit him to a utility role when he permanently settles in the majors. For now, the Rockies are content to let Adames handle an everyday role at Triple-A with Troy Tulowitzki in place at shortstop for the big club.

The infielder is probably already a major-league caliber defender, but there remain some lingering doubts about his ability to thrive offensively at the next level. He looked overmatched in his first exposure to the majors late last season, recording just one hit in 15 at-bats.

Adames was optioned to the minors on Saturday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

The Rockies will lean on their more experienced options for infield depth early on and allow Adames to continue his development with everyday at-bats at Triple-A. Adames, a 23-year-old switch-hitter, went 13-for-39 (.333 average) with two doubles, three RBI, one walk and four strikeouts in 19 spring games with the major league team, after batting .338/.392/.441 in limited action at Triple-A Colorado Springs at the end of last season.

Adames was recalled by the Rockies from Double-A Tulsa on Monday, the Denver Post's Nick Groke reports.

The 23-year-old shortstop hit .338/.392/.441 with a home run and five steals in 38 games at Triple-A this season, but had less success (.267/.324/.336) in 88 games at Tulsa, so it's not quite clear what kind of hitter the Rockies are promoting. However, it won't matter much, as he's unlikely to see much playing time down the stretch.

Adames was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Wednesday, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.

The Rockies needed to shore up their bullpen after Tuesday's game went 16 innings, and Adames was the logical choice to get the bump. Rob Scahill was recalled in the corresponding move. Adames has posted just a .684 OPS in 84 games with Double-A Tulsa this season but may get the call back when rosters expand in September.
