Williams suffered the injury when diving back to first base on a pickoff attempt in the fifth inning, which forced him to leave the contest. Though he will not start Saturday, Williams is confident that the injury will not result in an extended absence. "It's happened to me before," Williams told ESPN New York. "It's usually just a couple of days and I'm back to normal. It just feels tired. It feels like I have a heavy arm. Like my arm’s a thousand pounds. Besides that it’s pretty good." It was an interesting night for Williams who struck out in his first at bat, and then lined a ball into the seats in straight-away right field in his next trip. He also misplayed a line drive to centerfield into a double in the next inning before being lifted for a pinch-hitter. The Yankees will take the opportunity to see how close he is to ready as they await the return of Jacoby Ellsbury.
Thu Jun 11 201511:53Williams called up to join Yankees on Friday
Williams has been called up to join the Yankees on Friday, the New York Post's Joel Sherman reports.
He will take the outfield spot vacated by Ramon Flores, who was recently optioned back to Triple-A. Williams has been on the prospect radar for five years now, thanks to a plus glove in center field and good speed. He has finally started to hit consistently, hitting .318 between stops at Double-A and Triple-A this year. There is a good chance he will struggle initially against big league pitching, and there is very little power in the profile, but his defense should be enough to get him a few starts per week while Jacoby Ellsbury is out.
