Sun May 2 202101:23Conforto HR in 9th, questionable call help Mets beat Phils
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Conforto hit a tiebreaking home run in the ninth inning and the New York Mets benefited from a very questionable call by the second base umpire to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 Saturday night. Conforto led off the ninth by connecting against Hector Neris (1-3). Conforto also had a two-run double in a four-run first inning against former teammate Zack Wheeler. The Mets squandered the 4-0 lead but recovered to win for just the fourth time in 12 games — even after center fielder Brandon Nimmo and third baseman J.D. Davis exited with hand injuries. Alec Bohm tied it with a two-run homer for the Phillies, who have alternated wins and losses in their last 10 games. Philadelphia hasn’t won consecutive games since a three-game sweep of Atlanta to open the season. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, second base umpire Jose Navas ruled Andrew McCutchen ran out of the baseline to avoid an attempted tag by shortstop Francisco Lindor on what became an inning-ending... Sat Jan 16 202100:48Indians avoid arbitration with 3, all acquired in trades
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians avoided salary arbitration with catcher Austin Hedges, right-hander Phil Maton and infielder Amed Rosario, agreeing Friday to one-year deals with three players who joined them via trade in the past six months. Hedges will make $3.28 million in 2021, Rosario $2.4 million and Maton $975,000. The salaries of Hedges and Maton are guaranteed. The team began the offseason with seven arbitration eligible players, including All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor. But the Indians traded Lindor along with starter Carlos Carrasco to the New York Mets for Rosario, infielder Andrés Giménez and two propsects. The 25-year-old Rosario batted .252 in 46 games last season. It’s not clear what the Indians plans are for Rosario, who could be in the mix to replace Lindor. Rosario earned $225,474 prorated from a $608,780 salary. Considered an excellent defensive catcher, the 28-year-old Hedges came to the Indians in July from San Diego as part of the Mike Clevinger deal. Hedges got one hit in 12 at-bats with the Indians in 2020. He made $1,111,111 prorated from a $3 million salary. Also part of the Clevinger deal, Maton will likely have a spot in Cleveland’s bullpen in 2021. The right-hander started well after joining the Indians, but struggled over his last 11 appearances and finished 3-3 with a 4.57 ERA. He earned $211,889 prorated from a $572,100 salary. ___

Tue Dec 22 202017:02Indians, reliever Wittgren agree to contract for 2021
CLEVELAND (AP) — Reliever Nick Wittgren avoided salary arbitration with the Cleveland Indians by agreeing Tuesday to a $2 million, one-year contract. The right-hander has become a dependable piece in Cleveland's bullpen for manager Terry Francona. Wittgren went 2-0 with a 3.42 ERA in 25 games last season. He is 7-1 with a 2.99 ERA in 80 games over two seasons for Cleveland, which acquired him in a trade with Miami in 2019. The Indians have primarily used Wittgren in a setup role, and that likely will continue despite the club deciding not to re-sign closer Brad Hand. Francona, though, has hinted about using others in save situations and Wittgren could be in that mix. Wittgren was slated to make $1,125,000 in 2020, but he earned a prorated salary of $416,667 for the pandemic-shortened season. The Indians have three players still eligible to swap arbitration figures Jan. 15 if no deal is reached: shortstop Francisco Lindor, catcher Austin Hedges and right-hander Phil Maton. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Thu Sep 10 202020:51Indians break up rookie Singer's no-hit bid in 8th
CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland's Austin Hedges broke up Kansas City rookie Brady Singer's no-hit bid with a two-out single in the eighth inning on Thursday night.Singer, who gave up 10 singles in his previous outing against the Chicago White Sox on Sept. 4, was on the verge of baseball history before Hedges, who came in batting .148, pushed a 3-2 fastball through the right side on the right-hander's 116th pitch. The ball rolled through the hole vacated by the second baseman on a defensive shift.Singer finished the inning and got a huge ovation from his teammates when he got back to the dugout. Before giving up the hit, the closest Cleveland had come to a hit was when Tyler Naquin flied out to the warning track in right in the fifth and César Hernández lined out for the final out in the sixth.Singer has struck out eight and walked two.The Royals haven't had a no-hitter pitched for them since Bret Saberhagen in 1991 and have only four in team history. There have only been 23 no-hitters by rookies since 1901, the last by San Francisco's Chris Heston in 2015.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP-Sports
