2B Dilson Herrera was traded by the Mets to the Reds on Monday, along with minor league LHP Max Wotell, in exchange for OF Jay Bruce. Herrera has long been viewed as the Mets' second baseman of the future, but GM Sandy Alderson said the club was comfortable dealing him because INF Jose Reyes is signed through next season and because middle infield prospect Gavin Cecchini has played well this season at Triple-A Las Vegas. Herrera batted .276 with 13 homers, 55 RBIs and six stolen bases in 86 games for Las Vegas. He played parts of the last two seasons with the Mets, during which he batted .215 with six homers, 17 RBIs and two stolen bases in 45 games.

2B Dilson Herrera may be the leading internal candidate to replace 2B Daniel Murphy if the latter departs as a free agent. GM Sandy Alderson called the 21-year-old Herrera "a viable alternative" if Murphy exits, but there is no one else on the radar other than SS Wilmer Flores, who made strides defensively this season at shortstop and is expected to enter next season as the starter there. Herrera, whom the Mets acquired from the Pirates in 2013, hit .211 with three homers and six RBIs in 90 at-bats this season for the Mets and .327 with 11 homers, 50 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 81 games with Triple-A Las Vegas.

Herrera was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.
Herrera will join the Mets on Tuesday with the Triple-A season coming to a close Monday night. The infielder has appeared in 25 games for New York this season, making a handful of starts, but he's hit just .195 in 82 at-bats. Herrera will likely be relegated to pinch hitting and pinch running over the next few weeks as the Mets attempt to hold off the Nationals for the NL East crown.

Herrera continues to rake at Triple-A Las Vegas, notching his sixth multi-hit game in his last nine starts Saturday.
Herrera's batting average is up to a cool .346 on the year. While he benefits from playing in Las Vegas, his skill set is clearly evident. Herrera should be called up when the 51s' season ends.
Tue Aug 4 201507:05Herrera homered for second straight game Monday
Herrera homered for the second straight game Monday. He has driven in eight runs in his last three games and 13 in his last eight for Triple-A Las Vegas.
Herrera recent roll has raised his batting average to .340 for the year. He struggled in his 25 games for the Mets earlier in the year but has clearly regained his stroke in the minors. Herrera should be a September roster expansion call up and still profiles as possibly the future starting second baseman for the Mets.
Tue Jun 30 201514:29Herrera optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday
Herrera was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.
The Mets needed to free up a roster spot with Daniel Murphy coming off the DL, and Herrera was the casualty. In 25 games for New York this season, Herrera hit just .195 with four RBI and 22 strikeouts in 82 at-bats. The 21-year-old will return to Las Vegas, where he tore it up to the tune of a .367/.296/.500 slash line in 22 games earlier in the year.

Herrera could be headed for reduced playing time or a demotion to Triple-A in the near future, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports.
If he were hitting this would probably not be the case, but the Mets are reportedly going to move Wilmer Flores to second base once Daniel Murphy is activated from the DL. In dynasty leagues it is certainly worth holding Herrera, but in single-season formats it is probably time to start looking at other options.
Sun Jun 21 201520:54Herrera 0-3 in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Braves
Herrera went 0-for-3 in Sunday's 1-0 loss to the Braves.
Herrera, who is hitless in his last four games, has started 11 straight contests since taking over as the Mets' primary second baseman. He has two stolen bases, a home run and five walks during the stretch, but with a .176 batting average (6-for-34), one run and one RBI. It's still expected that Herrera will stay at second base once Daniel Murphy (quad) returns, although Ruben Tejada (ankle) -- who suffered his own injury Saturday -- has been better than Herrera at the plate this season. Herrera could eventually start to feel more pressure if two (or three) of Tejada, Murphy and David Wright (back) are eventually healthy at the same time.

Herrera seems likely to retain second base duties after Daniel Murphy (quad) returns from the disabled list, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.
Herrera went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Sunday, and his 3-for-10 since rejoining the Mets on Thursday. In addition to his contributions at the plate, Herrera brings solid defense to the table, and has provided the Mets with a spark of energy that they've been lacking. When Murphy does return from the disabled list, it appears that he will usurp Ruben Tejada at the hot corner, rather than return to his old job at second base. Since David Wright (back) remains without a clear timetable for a return, this type of lineup could continue until the the All-Star break or later.
Sun Jun 14 201515:39Dilson Herrera: Likely To Hold Job At Second Base
New York Mets second baseman Dilson Herrera will likely continue to get regular playing time when second baseman Daniel Murphy returns from a quadriceps injury, according to ESPN New York.
New York Mets second baseman Dilson Herrera will likely continue to get regular playing time when second baseman Daniel Murphy returns from a quadriceps injury, according to ESPN New York. With Murphy and third baseman David Wright both on the disabled list, Herrera has started each of the last four games, going 4-for-13 with a home run and a stolen base. Infielder Ruben Tejada, who has been getting most of the playing time at third base, will likely move back to a bench role once Murphy returns from the disabled list. Murphy has spent most of his career at second base, but Wright's absence has led to Murphy making 13 appearances at third base this season. Wright remains without a clear timetable to return from a back injury, and Herrera could thus retain a starting job into the second half of the season. Murphy is expected to pick up his role as the regular third baseman when first eligible to return from the disabled list Saturday.
Thu Jun 11 201515:30Herrera will bat seventh and play second base against Giants
Herrera, who was activate from the disabled list Thursday, will bat seventh and play second base against the Giants.
With Ruben Tejada gone on the paternity list, Herrera will slot right in at second base. It's unclear how the split will change when he returns from the leave, but he should continue to at least see some starts at second and possibly at third as well.

Thu Jun 11 201512:58Herrera (finger) activated from DL prior to Thursday's game
Herrera (finger) has been activated from the DL prior to Thursday's game.
Herrera has been in the lineup regularly with Triple-A Las Vegas and will now presumably be in the lineup most days for New York. He is capable of playing third base, but second base is his natural position and he will probably get the start there Thursday with Ruben Tejada placed on the paternity list.

Herrera (finger) is on his way to New York and will be activated Thursday.
Herrera should start at second base with Ruben Tejada shifting over to third. A corresponding move will need to be made to make room for Herrera, which could mean that Eric Campbell is demoted or more likely, Kevin Plawecki (vertigo) is placed on the disabled list.

Herrera (finger) will remain with Triple-A Las Vegas for the time being, ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports.
It was anticipated that Herrera would be activated by the Mets along with Travis d'Arnaud prior to Wednesday's game, but d'Arnaud will be the only one getting the call Wednesday. Herrera went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Tuesday's rehab game and should rejoin the Mets sometime in the near future.
