CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs star Kris Bryant is following through on his own words when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic.Bryant returned to the starting lineup Monday against Kansas City after missing two games with a stomach ailment. The 28-year-old Bryant, who had thanked Reds second baseman Mike Moustakas after he self-reported possible coronavirus symptoms, spoke up when he himself wasn't feeling well Saturday, and then he had to sit out while he worked his way through Major League Baseball's pandemic protocols.“If we can add another part to our responsibility in that if you do feel something, you know, just stay away and take it as seriously as possible,” Bryant said on a video conference call. “That's the only way we're going to really get through a World Series. I just think it's important. Put your pride and egos aside. It could end up helping the rest of your teammates out, too.”The Cubs haven't had any positive coronavirus tests among their players since they started summer... [More]

The Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds were the first teams to try out baseball’s new time-saving measure — a doubleheader with seven-inning games. They ended up having a long day anyway after the opener was delayed for more than two hours because of rain. It’s been that kind of season so far for Major League Baseball. Last month, the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals opened this abbreviated schedule with a game that was shortened because of rain. That set the tone for a chaotic couple of weeks in which the coronavirus has wreaked havoc with the schedule — and the weather hasn’t always cooperated either.Already, there are questions about whether teams can realistically play the 60 games originally slated for them — and how they might try to come as close as possible.“We’re just going on whatever they tell us to do, and trying to stay healthy here, and play the games that are put in front of us,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said before the first of Sunday’s two games.By the end of... ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Top prospect Jo Adell is joining the Los Angeles Angels, a person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the Angels hadn't yet announced the transaction.Adell could make his major league debut in Seattle on Tuesday night when the struggling Angels (3-7) open a six-game road trip.Adell is a 21-year-old outfielder widely considered to be among the best prospects in baseball. He is ranked No. 6 overall by MLB Pipeline, while other talent evaluators rank him even higher. The 10th overall pick in the 2017 draft has risen through the Angels' minor league system more quickly than most projections, reaching Triple-A Salt Lake for 27 games last season as a 20-year-old with five-tool skills and major league power.Adell appeared to be close to making the Angels' major league roster out of summer camp, but was sent to their alternate training site in Long Beach. Adell showed off his impressive talent... [More]

A look at what's happening around the majors today:BACK TO WORKThe Philadelphia Phillies face a difficult assignment in their long-awaited return to action.Bryce Harper and the Phils haven't played since opening the season with a three-game series against the Miami Marlins, a team that has had at least 18 players test positive for the coronavirus. Although the Phillies didn’t have any players test positive, their games last week were postponed as a cautionary measure. The Phillies got to work out again Saturday, and now come back from a weeklong layoff to face Gerrit Cole and the AL East-leading New York Yankees on the road.Jake Arrieta takes on a power-packed lineup at Yankee Stadium. New York star Aaron Judge has homered in five straight games. This marks a homecoming of sorts for Phillies first-year manager Joe Girardi. He managed the Yankees from 2008-17 and helped them beat Philadelphia in the 2009 World Series.HOME AT LASTThe Milwaukee Brewers are finally playing their home opener a... [More]

Cleveland's starting rotation is rolling through the early stages of the season. The Houston Astros, on the other hand, are having to make do with a group that bears little resemblance to the one that pitched its way to the World Series last year.Someone forgot to tell the Indians that starting pitchers might struggle early in this abbreviated campaign. The short training camp doesn't seem to have affected this Cleveland rotation. In 10 games, the Indians' starters have struck out 86 batters with only nine walks, going 5-3 with a 2.57 ERA.Cleveland had a streak of seven straight starts by pitchers who went at least six innings with two runs or fewer. That was snapped Friday, but Shane Bieber looks like an ace so far, and Zach Plesac was outstanding in his first outing. It wasn't long ago that Houston was the team with a rotation everybody feared, but Gerrit Cole is with the New York Yankees now, and Justin Verlander has been out with a strained right forearm.Zack Greinke is still with the... NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge homered twice and drove in five runs, connecting for the fifth straight game and breaking an eighth-inning tie with a tape-measure shot that powered the New York Yankees past the Boston Red Sox 9-7 on Sunday night for their sixth consecutive victory. Luke Voit also went deep in a back-and forth slugfest to help the Yankees (7-1) finish a three-game sweep in the first series this season between the longtime rivals. New York has won six in a row and 11 of 12 against Boston since last July.DJ LeMahieu tied it 7 in the eighth with a two-out RBI single off Matt Barnes (0-1) past diving second baseman José Peraza. The clutch hit came after Mike Tauchman, who entered on defense in the seventh, walked and stole second.Judge then launched a no-doubt drive that landed several rows up in the raised bleachers beyond the left-center bullpen for his sixth home run already this year. The big slugger socked a three-run shot in the second, making him the first Yankees player... [More]

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers bench coach Pat Murphy suffered a heart attack during a Saturday team workout at Miller Park, but team officials said he was resting comfortably and should be out of the hospital later this week.Brewers general manager David Stearns said the 61-year-old Murphy received a stent and is expected to get released from Froedtert Hospital “in a couple of days.” Stearns said it was too early to estimate when Murphy might be back in uniform.“The prognosis for a recovery is good, and Pat is certainly going to be back in the dugout at some point,” Stearns said Sunday. “I could not venture to guess as to when that is. Right now the most important thing for Pat is to focus on his recovery and health. We’ll let him focus on that.”USA Today first reported that Murphy had suffered a heart attack.Stearns said that Murphy started experiencing symptoms while on the Miller Park field and reported them to the team’s medical staff, which immediately realized the gravity of... NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge homered for the fifth consecutive game Sunday night, becoming the first New York Yankees player in 13 years to accomplish the feat. The big slugger connected off left-handed reliever Matt Hall in the second inning, sending a three-run drive off the facing of the second deck in left field at Yankee Stadium to give New York a 3-2 lead over the Boston Red Sox.The previous Yankees hitter to go deep in five straight games was Álex Rodríguez in September 2007. Judge joined A-Rod as the only players in club history to hit five home runs in the first eight games of a season. Rodríguez also did that in 2007. Judge had never homered in four games in a row until connecting during Saturday night's 5-2 victory over Boston. The two-time All-Star led the American League with 52 home runs in 2017, when he was the AL Rookie of the Year and runner-up for MVP. Limited by injuries the past two years, he hit 27 homers each season. The shot Sunday gave Judge five homers and 12 RBIs in eight games this year. ___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
