Fri Jun 11 202123:36Another 1-run loss for Braves: Alcantara and Marlins win 4-3
MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins won by one for a change, and the Atlanta Braves again came up just a little bit short. Yimi García worked around a leadoff single and a two-out walk in the ninth inning to seal the Marlins' 4-3 win Friday. They improved to 5-12 in one-run games, while Atlanta has lost three consecutive games by a run each. “Those kind of games are usually decided by something small,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “We’ve had a chance to win a lot of them.” Because of their poor record in close games, the Marlins are 28-35 even though they've outscored their opponents. And because of the recent skid by the Braves (29-32), they've fallen five games behind the NL East-leading New York Mets. “It’s one of them years," manager Brian Snitker said. “Every day the last few years we won these games. We’re not now. As long as we’re playing these games and giving ourselves a chance, at some point in time we’ll start winning them.” Atlanta out-hit Miami 9-5 but went 2 for 12 with... [More]
Fri Jun 11 202122:46Another 1-run loss for Braves: Alcantara and Marlins win 4-3
MIAMI (AP) — Jazz Chisholm's two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning put the Miami Marlins ahead to stay, and they beat the Atlanta Braves for the fourth time in five meetings this year, winning 4-3 Friday. Sandy Alcantara (4-5) allowed two runs in six innings. Yimi García, the Marlins' fifth pitcher, worked around a leadoff single and a two-out walk in the ninth, striking out Austin Riley to end the game for his 11th save in 14 chances. The Braves have lost three consecutive games by a run each. They're 1-4 against Miami this year. They out-hit Miami 9-5 but went 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position. Ozzie Albies drove in two runs with two hits for Atlanta. Ronald Acuña Jr. doubled twice, scored twice and had an RBI, but García struck him out on three pitches in the ninth. Charlie Morton (5-3), who had won his past three starts, gave up four runs in four innings, and his ERA rose to 4.50. He walked two, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch in the fourth, when Miami scored three... [More]
Thu Jun 10 202123:25Marte's four hits lead Marlins past Rockies 11-4
MIAMI (AP) — Starling Marte had four hits, including a homer and double, and the Miami Marlins beat the Colorado Rockies 11-4 on Thursday night. Adam Duvall and Jazz Chisholm also went deep for the Marlins, who had 16 hits. “The guys were swinging the bats pretty good all night,” Miami manager Don Mattingly said. Trevor Rogers (7-3) allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings. Miami’s rookie left-hander struck out eight, walked one and has yielded two runs or fewer in 12 of his 13 starts. The homers from Duvall, Chisholm and Marte off starter Chi Chi González keyed a six-run second inning. Duvall’s two-run shot started the scoring. Chisholm’s three-run blast bounced off the upper deck in right field, and Marte followed with his solo shot over the left-center field wall. “Hitting is contagious,” Chisholm said. “The offense is contagious. You always want to jump into the fun.” Miami padded its lead in the fifth on José Devers’ RBI single and Jon Berti’s run-scoring double. In addition... [More]

Tue May 25 202119:23Marlins 3B Anderson sidelined for at least several weeks
MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins third baseman Brian Anderson will be sidelined for at least several weeks with a partial shoulder dislocation and was put on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Surgery is a possibility, general manager Kim Ng said. “The most important thing for us right now is to give it some time to let the inflammation, pain and discomfort subside before we can give any further evaluation,” Ng said. The Marlins reinstated Isan Díaz from the injured list. In Anderson's absence, Díaz and Jon Berti are expected to share time at third. Anderson is batting .250 with three homers and 11 RBIs. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Sun Mar 28 202101:15Bruce, Sandoval on big league rosters, Maybin, Frazier cut
Jay Bruce returned to the major leagues Saturday, making the New York Yankees' roster at the deadline for decisions on free agents who had gone to spring training with minor league contracts. Atlanta added third baseman Pablo Sandoval, infielder Ehire Adrianza and reliever Nate Jones to its major league roster. The Chicago Cubs told infielder Eric Sogard he will be added. Detroit, having already told pitcher Julio Teheran he will be on the roster, informed pitcher Derek Holland he will be added and decided to pay a $100,000 retention bonus to keep pitcher Erasmo Ramirez. Under baseball's collective bargaining agreement, players who became free agents after the World Series and then went to spring training with minor league contracts had to be told by noon EDT Saturday that they would be added to the 40-man roster, paid the retention bonus or released. Released players can re-sign with the same team. Miami paid the retention bonus to catcher Sandy Leon, the only other player given the bonus.... [More]

Thu Sep 24 202013:45Mattingly's Marlins could clinch berth at Yankee Stadium
MIAMI (AP) — Don Mattingly returns this weekend to Yankee Stadium, where his best years as a player always ended when the regular season did. Now Mattingly is enjoying perhaps his best year as a manager, leading the Miami Marlins as they try to extend their improbable season into next week. His young team is staggering toward the finish line, with four consecutive losses heading into Thursday night's game in Atlanta. But the Marlins still control their own destiny, and will head to New York for a three-game series hoping to clinch their first postseason berth since 2003. “Nobody picked this club to be able to do anything this season, but we believed in ourselves,” Mattingly said. “It’s easy to be proud of these guys, the way they have dealt with everything.” It would be rich irony for Mattingly’s team to clinch a postseason spot in Yankee Stadium, where he was an MVP, a batting champion and a six-time All-Star — but made the playoffs only in the final season of his 14-year career. Mattingly... [More]
Sun Sep 20 202016:23Marlins keep up playoff push, edge Nats to open twinbill
MIAMI (AP) — Brandon Kintzler escaped a bases-loaded jam to end it and the Miami Marlins kept up their playoff push, scratching out a late unearned run off Max Scherzer to beat the Washington Nationals 2-1 Sunday to open a doubleheader. The Marlins began the day with a half-game lead over Philadelphia for second place in the NL East. The top two teams in each division are assured spots in the expanded postseason field — two extra wild-card clubs will advance, too. A two-out error by first baseman Eric Thames in the sixth inning gave Miami the go-ahead run. Washington threatened in the seventh and final inning when Luis Garcia led off with a single and pinch hitter Yadiel Hernandez followed with a ground-rule double off Kintzler. After Andrew Stevenson flied out to short right, Trea Turner hit a hard smash to Kintzler, who got Garcia out on a rundown that left runners still at second and third. Juan Soto was intentionally walked before Kintzler struck out Kurt Suzuki for his 10th save. Matt... [More]
Thu Sep 17 202017:02Eovaldi shuts down Marlins in 5-3 victory
MIAMI (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi pitched five shutout innings and struck out seven, and the Miami Marlins stumbled in their playoff run with a 5-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. Rafael Devers had a three-run homer, Kevin Plawecki hit a two-run single and Alex Verdugo had three hits for the Red Sox. Seeking its first postseason appearance since winning the 2003 World Series, Miami is second in the NL East . The Marlins fell three games behind division-leading Atlanta, which was idle. Eovaldi (3-2) didn't allow a hit until Garrett Cooper's leadoff double in the fifth. Miguel Rojas singled but Eovaldi struck out Jazz Chisholm and Chad Wallach, then retired Corey Dickerson on a groundout. A 30-year-old right-hander who was with the Marlins from 2012-14, Eovaldi was lifted after 76 pitches in his second appearance since returning Sept. 12 a stint on the injured list caused by a strained right calf. Ryan Brasier pitched a scoreless eighth, and Matt Barnes got three straight out for his eighth... [More]
