Fri Jan 13 202315:14Zac Gallen Agrees To One-Year, $5.6 Million Deal
The Arizona Diamondbacks and starting pitcher Zac Gallen avoided salary arbitration on Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $5.6 million deal. In his third full season with the Snakes, Gallen had a career-best season, going 12-4 with a 2.54 ERA (3.05 FIP), a league-best 0.91 WHIP, a league-best 5.9 hits per nine innings and a 26.9 percent strikeout rate in 31 starts over a career-high 184 innings to come in fifth in National League Cy Young voting. The 27-year-old right-hander came into last season with an ERA above 4.00 in just one of his three seasons, with the other resulting in sub-3.00 ERAs. While he did strike out a career-low 9.4 hitters in 2022, all of his other peripherals look strong as he heads into his fifth MLB season.

Fri Sep 23 202214:05Zac Gallen Dominates Dodgers In No-Decision
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen put forth his best effort on Thursday against the Los Angeles Dodgers but was unable to come away with a win in the 3-2 loss. In eight innings, he allowed just one earned run on two hits while walking none and striking out a career-high 13 batters. He allowed just two baserunners in the game. The 27-year-old right-hander is having a breakout season in 2022, going 12-3 with a 2.46 ERA (2.88 FIP), a league-leading 0.89 WHIP, a career-high 180 strikeouts and 43 walks in 172 innings over 29 starts for the D-backs. Gallen has an ERA under 1.00 in his last nine starts and he'll be a must-start in fantasy the rest of the way.

Wed Aug 31 202211:32Zac Gallen Wins His 10th Game Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen won his 10th game of the season in Tuesday's 12-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Gallen was masterful, tossing seven shutout innings on just two hits while walking one and striking out seven batters. The 27-year-old right-hander hasn't allowed a run in his last 34 1/3 innings over his last five starts, dropping his ERA to 2.53 (3.17 FIP) and WHIP to a league-leading 0.94. In the same span, he's struck out 39 and walked just seven hitters. Gallen has a career-high 145 strikeouts and just 39 walks in 145 2/3 frames this year over his 25 starts for Arizona. He'll get a tough matchup against the Milwaukee Brewers next, but Gallen is easily a must-start in fantasy right now.

Thu Aug 18 202221:50Zac Gallen Strikes Out Career-High 12 Batters Thursday
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen (9-2) allowed four hits while striking out a career-high 12 across 7 1/3 scoreless innings in Thursday's 5-0 win over the San Francisco Giants. He picked up his ninth win of the season. The 27-year-old threw 99 pitches, landing 70 for strikes. He has been outstanding as of late, striking out 26 batters over 21 1/3 scoreless innings over his last three starts. The right-hander owns a 2.78 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and 132 strikeouts across 132 2/3 innings in 2022. Fantasy managers should continue to roll with Gallen in his next scheduled start Wednesday on the road against the Kansas City Royals.

Tue Aug 2 202211:34Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly Not Going Anywhere
The Arizona Diamondbacks have determined that starting pitchers Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly aren't going anywhere at this year's trade deadline. There has been a little interest in veteran left-hander Madison Bumgarner, but nothing serious yet. Gallen has a no-decision in seven of his last outings, but he's been solid for the D-backs all year, posting a 3.24 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 101:29 K:BB over 105 2/3 innings. Kelly has been even better, going 10-5 with a 2.87 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 104:38 K:BB in 125 1/3 innings in his fourth MLB season. In the month of July, he went 4-0 with a 1.31 ERA, 0.77 WHIP, 33 K's and eight walks in 41 1/3 innings over his six starts. It makes sense why Arizona would want to hang onto both of these starters.

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen was at the top of his game Friday night, allowing just two hits in seven innings against the Washington Nationals. He did not allow a run or walk a batter, and he struck out seven. Gallen was credited with the win, improving his record to 5-2 on the year. He now has a 3.31 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 96 strikeouts in 100 2/3 innings across 18 starts on the season.

Wed Jun 22 202212:30Zac Gallen Strikes Out 11 Padres
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen set a high-water mark for strikeouts this year with 11 against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. His previous high had been nine in his start on May 14. Gallen lasted six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks in a 3-2 loss, though he took a no-decision. This performance gives Gallen a K/9 of 9.00 for the season, which sits lower than his career mark of 10.14. If the strikeouts continue to increase, Gallen will climb even higher in the rankings for fantasy starting pitchers.

Thu Jun 16 202214:37Zac Gallen Hits Four Batters, Still Excellent
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen did not have his best command Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds, but he still managed to pull out another excellent start. Gallen allowed two runs on two hits, no walks, and four hit batters in seven innings. He struck out five. Gallen was visibly frustrated after hitting so many batters, but with a 2.91 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 60 strikeouts in 65 innings and 12 games started this year, there isn't much to complain about for Gallen or fantasy managers. He's a must-start in every matchup at this point.

Fri Jun 3 202214:22Zac Gallen Not Going Anywhere
Teams are hopeful that the Arizona Diamondbacks might trade starting pitcher Zac Gallen this summer, but they understand that Arizona will keep him "unless they get an offer they can't refuse." "Everyone would want him. Won't happen," said a Diamondbacks person. Gallen had a nice bounce-back outing against the Atlanta Braves his last time out to earn his fourth win of the season, and he's given up two or fewer earned runs in all but one of his nine starts in 2022. The 26-year-old has been great this year with a 2.32 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 49 strikeouts and 12 walks in 50 1/3 innings. Gallen would be more attractive in fantasy on a contending team, but it looks like that won't be happening this year.

Fri May 20 202200:07Zac Gallen Improves To 3-0
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen earned his third victory of the season on Thursday as his club was able to defeat the Cubs 3-1. The right-hander allowed one run on two hits and three walks over five innings of work while striking out four in the 88-pitch outing. It wasn't his most efficient game of the season, but effective nonetheless as he now owns a sharp 1.14 ERA and 0.71 WHIP with 39 K in 39 1/3 IP. Fantasy managers should be nothing short of ecstatic this season after Gallen struggled with his numbers and with his health in 2021. He'll have an opportunity to build on his bounce-back season in his next start versus the Royals next week.

Sun May 15 202200:42Zac Gallen Terrific Again On Saturday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen had another impressive outing on Saturday despite settling for a no-decision in his club's 4-2 loss to the Cubs. The right-hander struck out nine while allowing one run on two hits and a walk through six frames of work, with his only blemish coming off a Yan Gomes home run in the fourth inning. Gallen has now allowed two runs or fewer in all six of his starts this season as he currently sits with a stellar 1.05 ERA and 0.67 WHIP through 34 1/3 IP. He's also posted a superb 35/5 K/BB on the year as he looks to be fully past his injury-plagued 2021 campaign. He'll look to repeat this sharp performance with a rematch versus the Cubs at Wrigley Field next week.

Tue May 3 202200:47Zac Gallen Earns First Win Of Season Monday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen finally got in the win column in Monday's 5-4 win over the Marlins. The 26-year-old pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Gallen has gotten off to a nice start after a disappointing 2021 and is now 1-0 with a 1.27 ERA, 19 strikeouts, and four walks over 21 1/3 IP this season. However, wins may be hard to come by for Gallen, given the team's poor offensive output. His next matchup will be a tough one against the Rockies, although he will get to pitch at home.

Sat Apr 16 202210:55Zac Gallen Starting Saturday Against Mets
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen (thumb) will make his season debut on Saturday against the New York Mets after having his last start on Tuesday against the Houston Astros pushed back due to a small cut on his right thumb. The 26-year-old right-hander dealt with shoulder bursitis this offseason as well, but he was sharp in two spring training starts for the D-backs. Gallen has excellent control and had a 4.30 ERA and 1.29 WHIP while fanning 139 and walking 49 in 23 starts over 121 1/3 innings in 2021. In his first start of the season against a tough Mets lineup, Gallen will be more risky than usual for fantasy managers.

Mon Apr 11 202218:15Zac Gallen Has His Tuesday Start Pushed Back
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen (thumb) has been scratched from his scheduled start against the Houston Astros on Tuesday. He has a small cut on his thumb. According to Diamondbacks beat writer Nick Piecoro, Gallen should be able to make his season debut this coming weekend against the New York Mets. Madison Bumgarner is being moved up a day to pitch in Tuesday's game. Gallen made 23 starts for the D-backs last year and went 4-10 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. While it's frustrating to see his first start pushed back, the injury certainly doesn't sound like anything that should cause fantasy owners to panic about.

Wed Mar 30 202221:08Zac Gallen Pitches Well In Spring Debut
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen (shoulder) had a promising outing in his Spring Training debut on Wednesday. He pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed one hit, no walks and no runs while striking out two. He utilized each of his pitches and his velocity was solid on each. He was hitting 94-95 mph on his fastball. Gallen has been behind schedule this spring as he's dealt with right shoulder bursitis. He will miss his first start of the year, which would have come during the team's second game of the season, but he may wind up making his first start just a few days later. Gallen threw 36 pitches in Wednesday's outing and also added nine more pitches in the bullpen to continue working his way up to game form.

Tue Mar 29 202219:04Zac Gallen To Make Spring Debut Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen (shoulder) will make his Cactus League debut against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Gallen has been dealing with right shoulder bursitis in the offseason, and he was behind the other pitchers in camp as a result. The 26-year-old right-hander has been throwing off a mound for weeks, though, so he's not very far behind. With that said, he is unlikely to have a full workload early in the season if he's on the Opening Day roster and doesn't suffer any setbacks to close out spring training. In 23 starts covering 121 2/3 innings last year, Gallen had a 4.30 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 139 strikeouts and 49 strikeouts for the Snakes.

Sat Mar 26 202221:38Zac Gallen Unlikely To Be Ready For Opening Day
Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen (shoulder) is "unlikely to be ready to take the ball in the second game of the season," writes Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Hindered by a shoulder injury, Gallen threw a two-inning simulated game on Friday and should take the mound in a spring training contest soon. However, Arizona doesn't want to rush him back, hence the idea that he'll open the regular season on the shelf. The former top prospect finished 2021 with a 4.30 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, .231 xBA and 1.39 WHIP through 23 starts last season.

Mon Mar 21 202214:17Zac Gallen Dealing With Bursitis
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen (shoulder) had some stiffness in his shoulder in December, and an MRI exam showed bursitis. He threw his second bullpen session of camp on March 18 and said he had no issues with his right shoulder. The next step is for Gallen to face live hitters in a batting practice session, but he's currently behind the other pitchers in camp, and there's some question if he'll be ready for Opening Day. If he's not ready, he should be ready shortly after the season starts. The 26-year-old shouldn't lose any fantasy value because of the issue, at least not yet. Gallen went 4-10 in 2021 with a 4.30 ERA and 1.29 WHIP while fanning 139 hitters and walking 49 in 23 starts covering 121 1/3 innings.

Mon Mar 14 202222:44Zac Gallen Dealing With Shoulder Issues
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen (shoulder) is uncertain for Opening Day. He is currently behind at camp, but will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday. Gallen is currently dealing with a case of shoulder bursitis this offseason. This is an issue that could force Gallen to miss time at the start of the season. This is a shame for a pitcher that continues to deal with injuries. Gallen has looked good when healthy, but keeping him on the field has been tricky.

Wed Sep 1 202112:21Zac Gallen Throws Quality Start In Loss
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen threw a quality start against the San Diego Padres Tuesday night, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks in six innings. He struck out four batters. Unfortunately, there was little run (or hit) support for him against Blake Snell, and he took the loss, dropping his record for the season to 2-8. Gallen has not performed up to expectations this year, with a 4.34 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP, and 106 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings, but he's shown promise in his last three starts, allowing just three earned runs total across 18 innings. There's plenty of fantasy upside for him the rest of the way.
