Sat Apr 16 202215:25Casey Mize Diagnosed With Ligament Sprain
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize was diagnosed with a medial collateral ligament sprain of the elbow on Saturday according to manager A.J. Hinch. The right-hander was placed on the 10-day IL on Friday after throwing five innings on Thursday since he had some discomfort in between days. Hinch added he isn't feeling as sore as he was on Friday, but he will seek alternative opinions in the coming days. Mize is 0-1 with four strikeouts and a 5.40 ERA through his first two starts as it appears he will be out for at least the next couple of weeks at a minimum.

Fri Apr 15 202221:12Casey Mize Lands On 10-Day IL
The Detroit Tigers placed right-hander Casey Mize on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right elbow on Friday. Mize threw five innings in a win over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday and appeared no worse for the wear following the appearance. The Tigers have yet to indicate the severity of Mize's injury, but it is a red flag anytime a pitcher comes down with an elbow problem. The Tigers recalled outfielder Daz Cameron in a corresponding move. As far as replacements for Mize go, right-hander Michael Pineda is close to making his 2022 debut after a visa issue during spring training and lefty Tyler Alexander could remain part of the rotation instead of returning to the bullpen.

Thu Sep 30 202109:23Casey Mize Struggles In His Final Start Of 2021
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize made his final outing of the year on Wednesday. Facing the Minnesota Twins, he pitched four innings and allowed five hits, no walks and three earned runs while striking out four. All three of the runs came in the first inning. He settled in after the rough start. In his first full year in the majors, the 24-year-old right-hander went 7-9 with a 3.71 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. His 19.3% strikeout rate ranked in the 21st percentile of the league. He also gave up a good amount of hard contact with a .456 xSLG that ranked in the 17th percentile of the league. He'll be worth targeting with a late round pick in fantasy drafts next year, but he has some work to do before becoming a reliable fantasy pitcher.

Sat Sep 25 202109:53Casey Mize Goes Three Innings In Friday's Start
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize pitched three innings in his start against the Kansas City Royals on Friday. He allowed two hits, no walks and one earned run while striking out three. Mize has gone a total of 11 innings over his four starts in September, pitching to a 4.09 ERA. The 24-year-old right-hander has certainly flashed a good amount of promise this year, but the team is significantly limiting him to close out the year, rendering him essentially useless in most fantasy formats. He'll make one more start this year against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.

Wed Sep 22 202118:25Casey Mize Will Start Friday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize is set to take the mound on Friday against the Kansas City Royals. Mize has pitched to a 3.64 ERA, a 4.78 FIP, 111 strikeouts, and 41 walks in 143.1 innings this season. The rookie was previously set to start against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, but with the game postponed due to inclement weather, Mize will now take on Kansas City. It's a better matchup as the Royals have scored the ninth-fewest runs in the league. That being said, with the Tigers limiting Mize's innings in the form of shorter starts, he might not have much fantasy appeal outside of deeper leagues on Friday.

Sat Sep 18 202108:01Casey Mize Gives Up One Run Over Three Frames
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize had another short outing against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. He pitched three innings and allowed three hits, one walk and one earned run while striking out three. The Tigers have been closely managing Mize's load throughout September. The 53 pitches he threw in Friday's start were the most he's thrown so far this month. He threw a total of 82 pitches over his previous two starts. The 24-year-old has gone 7-8 with a 3.64 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP over 28 starts on the year. He'll make his next start on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox.

Wed Sep 15 202118:57Casey Mize To Start Against Rays On Friday
Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey Mize will start on Friday in a matchup with the Tampa Bay Rays. The rookie has pitched to a 3.66 ERA, a 4.84 FIP, 108 strikeouts, and 40 walks in 140.1 innings this season. Detroit has been limiting Mize's innings with shorter starters lately, so there isn't a ton of fantasy upside for Friday's start outside of the deepest leagues. Mize only threw two innings in his last start, against the same Rays he'll face on Friday, and gave up three hits, three earned runs, and a walk in two innings while striking out a pair.

Wed Sep 8 202118:06Casey Mize Starting On Saturday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize will make his next start on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Mize has pitched to a 3.51 ERA, a 4.88 FIP, 106 strikeouts, and 39 walks in 138.1 innings this season. With the Tigers limiting Mize's innings this season, the starter won't have a ton of fantasy value if he's only pitching into the third or fourth inning every start. Still, he could help fantasy managers in search of help in the ERA or WHIP departments. In Mize's last outing against the Cincinnati Reds, he threw a perfect three innings. The 24-year-old will face a Rays team that has scored 30 more runs than any other team in baseball.

Mon Aug 30 202123:53Casey Mize Takes Loss On Monday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize gave up three earned runs over six innings during a 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Monday. The 24-year-old allowed five hits and one walk while striking out four across 79 pitches. Monday's performance marked the first time Mize has pitched at least six innings since going seven against the Baltimore Orioles on July 29. The right-hander is now sporting a 7-7 record with a 3.59 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 104 strikeouts across 135 1/3 innings. Mize will make his next start in a difficult matchup against the Cincinnati Reds this weekend.

Wed Aug 25 202106:47Casey Mize Tosses Five Shutout Innings On Tuesday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize had a strong outing against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. He pitched five innings and allowed three hits, two walks and no runs while striking out two. He earned the win to improve to 7-6 on the year. The Tigers have been limiting Mize to around 80 pitches lately. He threw 76 in Tuesday's outing. He's only pitched past the fifth inning once over his last nine starts. Tack on the fact that the team is going with a six-man rotation and it makes Mize even less enticing for fantasy purposes. He has a solid 3.55 ERA and 1.16 WHIP on the year and he'll make his next start next Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics.

Sun Aug 22 202113:07Casey Mize Starting On Tuesday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize will take the mound on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. Mize has thrown 124.1 innings for Detroit this season, pitching to a 3.69 ERA and a 5.03 FIP to go along with 98 strikeouts, and 36 walks. Detroit recently limited Mize's innings in the form of shorter starts, and he struggled a bit in his last outing, which lasted just four innings and included the right-hander surrendering four hits, four walks, and two runs. All that being said, he could be worth a look as a streaming option for managers on Tuesday against a Cardinals lineup that has struggled to score runs at times. Only four teams have scored fewer runs than St. Louis this season.

Wed Aug 18 202107:40Casey Mize Lasts Just Four Innings On Tuesday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize struggled a bit in his start against the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday. He pitched four innings and allowed four hits, four walks and two earned runs while striking out four. The four walks matched a season high. It took him 88 pitches to make it through his four innings. The Tigers have extended Mize's workload over his past four starts, but he hasn't made it past the fifth inning in any of his past three starts. Mize will take a 3.69 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP into his next start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

Thu Aug 12 202114:46Casey Mize Will Start On Tuesday
Detroit Tigers pitcher Casey Mize's next start will come on Tuesday at home against the Los Angeles Angels. Per a tweet from The Athletic's Cody Stavenhagen, the Tigers will pitch Mize and fellow starters Matt Manning and Tarik Skubal on extended rest from here on out this season. Mize has pitched to a 3.66 ERA, a 5.14 FIP, 94 strikeouts and, 32 walks in 120.1 innings this season. The 24-year-old should have some streaming upside against an Angels team that has scored the third-fewest runs in the league in the second half and is currently without Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon.

Wed Aug 11 202106:57Casey Mize Surrenders Three Home Runs On Tuesday
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize was a victim of the long ball in Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles. Mize pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed five hits, one walk and four runs (three earned runs) while striking out four. He surrendered three home runs in the game and has now given up exactly three home runs in each of his last two starts. Mize is struggling a bit right now. He has a 6.75 ERA over his last two starts. His season-long numbers remain strong as he has a 3.66 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. However, some of his underlying stats are a bit concerning, most notably his 5.14 xERA and his .470 xSLG, the latter of which ranks in the bottom 12% of the league. The Tigers are extending him a bit right now and because of that, he's worth a roster spot in deep leagues. His next start will be on Sunday against the Cleveland Indians.

Thu Aug 5 202109:01Casey Mize Allows Four Runs In Loss To Red Sox
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize suffered his sixth loss of the year on Wednesday as the team fell 4-1 to the Boston Red Sox. Mize pitched five innings and allowed seven hits, one walk and four earned runs while striking out three. He allowed three home runs in the game. It was the third time this year in which he'd allowed three home runs in a start. The Tigers held Mize to under 60 pitches over his first three starts in July, but they have been extending him more lately. He has thrown over 75 pitches in three straight games now. He should continue to pitch a bit deeper into games for the time being, but expect the Tigers to continue watching his workload closely as the season draws closer to an end. Mize will take a 3.57 ERA and 1.13 WHIP into his next start against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.

The Tigers will continue to manage his load closely going forward, but he may continue to sneak in a few seven-inning starts like this one.
