Thu Feb 8 201814:41Giants add Longoria, McCutchen as they try to bounce back
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Bruce Bochy's first glimpse at his overhauled roster gives him hope the Giants will feature a lineup much like the ones of several seasons ago — back when his club was capturing World Series championships every other year.He will be managing a new outfield. Well, with Hunter Pence moving from left to right to make room for Andrew McCutchen. And a new third baseman in Evan Longoria. And that's not to mention all the reliable returners such as Gold Glove shortstop Brandon Crawford, aces Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto, and closer Mark Melancon eager to have a bounce-back year.Bochy is confident he has the roster, depth and talent to rebound right away."We feel like we can play with anybody," he said.Longoria isn't sugar-coating anything as the Giants try to rebound from a 64-98 season and overtake the World Series runner-up Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won the past five NL West crowns."It's tough to win only 64 games, it really is. RHP Matt Cain called a team meeting Wednesday morning to tell his teammates that Saturday would the last start of his career unless "something super crazy happens." Cain won 104 games and three World Series titles in 13 seasons after being the Giants' first-round pick in 2002. "I can't see myself going to play with another team," Cain said. "This organization has meant so much to me. It's meant so much to family. I'm just grateful it's been a part of my life. I've enjoyed it so much." Cain, 33 on Sunday, will be paid a $7.5 million buyout of his $22 million option for 2018. "He's a complete Giant," manager Bruce Bochy said. "The way he carries himself. What he did on the field. The way he played. How he competed out there. That was something that influenced his decision. He didn't want to put non another uniform. That says a lot about him."

RHP Matt Cain will start against San Diego on Saturday, manager Bruce Bochy said, a game that could mark his final appearance for the Giants. Cain, 3-11 with a 5.66 ERA, has a $21 million option for 2018, but the Giants are expected to pay him a $7.5 million buyout instead, although nothing has been said. "With what he has done for the Giant organization, I wanted him to make a start at home," Bochy said. "I'm sure it's going to an emotional time, not that there is anything etched in stone as to what is going to happen. Just important for us and for Matt to have a start there. Matt's been great through all this, providing leadership and of course what he has brought to us on the field. This is going to be a special day, I'm sure for him but for all of us." Cain won World Series titles in 2010, 2012, 2014. He signed autographs and posed for pictures with Giants fans before Tuesday's game in Arizona.
