Wed Jun 1 202216:42Drew Smyly Lands On Injured List With Oblique Strain
The Chicago Cubs placed starting pitcher Drew Smyly (oblique) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday due to a right oblique strain. The 32-year-old suffered the injury during his start on Monday and had to be removed from the game. His timeline isn't clear at this point, but he'll at least miss his next three turns in the rotation. Through nine starts this year, the left-hander has gone 2-5 with a 3.80 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.

Mon May 30 202221:22Drew Smyly Leaves Monday Start With Oblique Tightness
Chicago Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly left his start against the Milwaukee Brewers after the third inning with oblique tightness in Game 2 of a Monday doubleheader. Smyly had thrown three scoreless innings while striking out three and walking one before being replaced on the mound by Anderson Espinoza. The 32-year-old hurler is having a solid season for the Cubs, posting a 3.80 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 34 strikeouts over 42 2/3 innings of work. Look for the Cubs to update Smyly's status after the game on Monday night.

Fri May 6 202211:40Drew Smyly To Return On Saturday
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Drew Smyly will make his return to the mound on Saturday versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was briefly placed on the bereavement list, but will return and start the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday. Smyly holds a 2.79 ERA over his first four outings this season. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect this type of success to last all season long. Smyly could be a shaky fantasy option against the tough Dodgers lineup.

Tue May 3 202219:00Drew Smyly Placed On Bereavement List
The Chicago Cubs placed left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly on the bereavement list on Tuesday. Right-handed pitcher Robert Gsellman was called up in a corresponding move. Smyly was originally slated to start Tuesday's game against the Chicago White Sox, but the team will now go with a bullpen game instead with right-hander Scott Effross getting things started. Smyly is off to a nice start to the season with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.09WHIP over four starts. It's unclear for now when his next start will be, but we should have an update on that within the next few days.

Fri Mar 25 202215:03Drew Smyly Will Start On Saturday For Chicago
Chicago Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly will start on Saturday for the team against the San Diego Padres, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian. Smyly joined the Cubs as a free agent after spending the 2021 season with the Atlanta Braves. In 126.2 innings for Atlanta, the left-hander posted a 4.48 ERA and a 5.11 FIP. He also struck out 117 batters while giving up just 41 walks. Smyly will join a Cubs rotation that also includes Kyle Hendricks, Marcus Stroman, Alec Mills, and Wade Miley. As of right now, he's likely only a fantasy option for managers in deeper leagues who need innings.

Sat Mar 19 202214:42Cubs Reportedly Agree To Terms With Drew Smyly
The Chicago Cubs have reportedly agreed to terms with left-handed starter Drew Smyly, per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. The 32-year-old appeared in 29 games for the Atlanta Braves last season, making 23 starts and throwing 126.2 innings. He pitched to a 4.48 ERA and a 5.11 FIP in those innings while registering 117 strikeouts and 41 walks. Smyly figures to join a Cubs rotation that also includes Kyle Hendricks, Alec Mills, and fellow new additions Marcus Stroman and Wade Miley. He'll likely only have fantasy value in deeper leagues, but could hold streaming appeal at times during the season as he's now set to pitch in the same division as the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds.

Wed Sep 22 202111:36Drew Smyly Looks Solid In Relief
Atlanta Braves pitcher Drew Smyly was asked a few weeks ago to pitch the rest of the season out of the bullpen. At the time, the Braves had a few starters coming back from injuries and didn't have room for everyone. The veteran left-hander is making the most of his chances out of the pen. On Tuesday, he went 3 1/3 innings, four hits allowed, one earned run, and four strikeouts in the 6-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Smyly pitched in relief of Jesse Chavez who drew the start as the opener. There is basically no fantasy value from either pitcher, but this combination seemed to work on Tuesday.

Wed Sep 8 202110:24Drew Smyly To Remain In Bullpen
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Drew Smyly will remain in the bullpen for likely the rest of the season. The veteran lefty seems to have lost his spot in the rotation to youngster Touki Toussaint. To be fair, Smyly hasn't been too reliable with a 4.71 ERA in 116 2/3 innings. He signed a one-year deal with Atlanta over the offseason. The expectation is that he'll head elsewhere next season.

Sun Aug 15 202122:48Drew Smyly Posts Another Below Average Outing
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Drew Smyly continued his lackluster play during Sunday's win over the Washington Nationals. He went four innings, six hits allowed, three earned runs, one walk, and four strikeouts in the 6-5 victory. Smyly has failed to reach the fifth inning in four of his last five outings. He'll take a 4.50 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 106 innings into his next outing versus the Baltimore Orioles. On paper, Smyly should be able to handle that lineup, but he shouldn't be considered a reliable fantasy option right now.

Thu Aug 5 202111:46Drew Smyly Has Short Outing On Wednesday
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Drew Smyly posted a no-decision during a lackluster outing against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. He went four innings, six hits allowed, three earned runs, walked one batter, and struck out two. All the damage was done on a first inning home run by Nolan Arenado. Smyly only lasted 75 pitches in this one before being pulled for a pinch hitter in the fifth inning. He'll attempt to lower his 4.50 ERA and 1.41 WHIP during his next outing against the Cincinnati Reds. That won't be a favorable matchup for Smyly and one where he can be avoided.

Thu Jul 29 202118:30Drew Smyly Lifted After Four Innings
Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Drew Smyly wasn't at his best during Thursday's contest against the New York Mets. He tossed four innings, nine hits allowed, three earned runs, one walk, and six strikeouts on Thursday. His velocity was down in this start and it's worth noting he was pulled due to a knee injury during his last start. Possibly, Smyly still isn't 100 percent healthy, which is why he might've been pulled early on Thursday. Fantasy managers should check back in case an injury does pop up.
