WASHINGTON (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray left Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals in the bottom of the second with a strained right oblique muscle.Ray waved to the dugout after throwing a ball to Washington catcher Matt Wieters with one out. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo and an athletic trainer came to the mound, and Ray soon departed. He was replaced by T.J. McFarland, who surrendered a home run to Wieters to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead.Ray allowed one hit and struck out two in 1 1/3 innings.Ray, an All-Star last season, entered Sunday with a 2-0 record and a 5.13 ERA. LHP T.J. McFarland's spot start on Sunday went sour quickly. McFarland (4-5) was making just his third major league start and first since July 1, 2014. He only got one out and surrendered seven runs on five hits and two walks. With Robbie Ray still working his way back from the concussion disabled list, the Diamondbacks turned to McFarland, the five-year veteran reliever who had 32 relief appearances this season. McFarland was the third Arizona starter to throw one-third of an inning or fewer and the first since Byung-Hyun Kim in 2007.

LHP T.J. McFarland will come out of the bullpen and start Sunday's finale in Minnesota. Manager Torey Lovullo had waited to make an announcement on Sunday's starter to see how the team fared in the first two games in Minnesota. McFarland is 4-4 with a 4.14 ERA in 32 relief appearances with Arizona this season. Lovullo said McFarland could possibly last 60 pitches. RHP Braden Shipley was also recalled from Triple-A with the team optioning RHPs J.J. Hoover and Silvino Bracho after the game.

LHP T.J. McFarland was activated from the 10-day disabled list to replace RHP Taijuan Walker on the 25-man roster. McFarland had been out since May 10 with a left ankle contusion. McFarland got into Sunday's game and allowed two unearned runs on a hit and a walk with a strikeout in an inning. He has a 1.35 ERA in six appearances.

McFarland was expected to miss a few days and, with a roster spot needed when RHP Zack Godley was promoted from Triple-A Reno, the disabled list proved a handy resting spot. "Let him get some strength and flexibility in his lower half and see where that takes him," manager Torey Lovullo said. McFarland retrieved the ball and threw out McCann before leaving with the medical staff.

LHP T.J. McFarland's contract has been purchased from Triple-A Reno to fill a gap in the bullpen. McFarland pitched from 2013-2016 for Baltimore and was 12-7 with a 4.27 ERA. For Reno this season, McFarland, 27, had made seven scoreless appearances and had limited opponents to a .171 average.
