Wed Aug 14 201920:32Indians turn around slow start, surge back into contention
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Indians' clubhouse is buzzing with activity about three hours before a three-game series opener against the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox, whose season could be over by October. For a stretch, Cleveland's postseason plans were in serious doubt. As players kill time before the first pitch, several relievers recline in black leather chairs at their cubicles, scanning phones while right-hander Tyler Clippard closes his eyes and grabs a quick nap on one of the large couches nearby.Looking for a fight, third baseman José Ramírez, who is finally swinging the bat like an All-Star again, barrels out of the shower area and shouts at rookie outfielder Oscar Mercado, who rolls his eyes. It's business as usual. Nothing out of place. And, according to All-Star MVP Shane Bieber, that's the key behind the Indians' stunning turnaround this season — same routine, consistency, treat every day and every game just like the one before it."Except, today, I just put on gray pants,"... Fri Nov 30 201821:46Indians trade All-Star Gomes to Nationals for prospects
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Indians traded one of their big arms — from behind the plateCleveland, which has discussed moving right-handers Corey Kluber, Trevor Bauer and Carlos Carrasco in possible trades while restructuring its payroll, dealt All-Star catcher Yan Gomes to the Washington Nationals on Friday night. In return, the three-time defending AL Central champions got outfielder Daniel Jonson, right-hander Jefry Rodriguez and a player to be named. Team president Chris Antonetti called Johnson and Rodriguez "upper-level prospects" who should be able to help the Indians in the next few seasons. The Gomes deal is unlikely to be the last move this offseason by the Indians, who followed up another strong regular season stretch run with a disappointing performance against Houston in the AL Division Series. Cleveland got swept, and with its window for contention possibly closing, the team is looking to fill some holes in the outfield and bullpen.Cleveland may have to move Kluber, a two-time Cy Young... Wed Oct 10 201818:01Francona, Indians still feeling 'sting' after ALDS sweep
CLEVELAND (AP) — Terry Francona's emotions are still raw and real. The postseason pain hasn't subsided just yet.Still feeling a "sting" after another successful season for Cleveland ended in disappointment and well short of a World Series title, Francona tried to explain on Wednesday why his team looked so overmatched against the Houston Astros.Francona didn't have all the answers — and he got annoyed at one point while defending star Jose Ramirez — but if October has taught anything to the two-time Series winner with Boston, it's that only one manager won't get second-guessed when the playoffs end."When you win you're smart, and when you lose you're dumb," Francona said. "That's kind of the way it is. You have one chance to do it, so you do it to the best of your ability and you have the confidence to come answer the questions and move on. But also move on trying to learn from what you didn't do good enough."The Indians weren't close to being good enough against the Astros, who had little... [More]

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland Indians reliever Andrew Miller is back on the 10-day disabled list, this time with inflammation in his right knee, and there's no timetable for his return. The AL Central-leading Indians made the move Saturday, a day after the lefty gave up three runs and got just two outs in an 11-2 loss to Houston."It's just not allowing him to be himself right now," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "That's probably the best way I could put it. I don't know what the next step will be."Cleveland recalled right-handers Ben Taylor and Evan Marshall from Triple-A Columbus. Right-hander Oliver Drake, who allowed six runs on Friday night, was designated for assignment.Miller was on the DL from April 26-May 11 with a strained left hamstring. Mon May 21 201802:46Cleveland's bullpen blues keeping AL Central in play
Two years ago, the Cleveland bullpen led the way when the Indians overcame significant injuries in their starting rotation and won the American League pennant. Now, the fickle nature of relief pitching is holding the AL Central favorites back. After Sunday night's 3-1 loss at Houston, Cleveland's relievers are 3-11 with an AL-worst 5.72 ERA. It has been a precipitous drop for a team that had the best bullpen ERA in all of baseball while storming to 102 wins a season ago. In fact, the Indians ranked in the top seven in that category every year from 2014-2017.In 2016, Cleveland reliever Andrew Miller was the MVP of the AL Championship Series against Toronto. In Game 3, starter Trevor Bauer had to leave in the first inning, and the bullpen pieced together the final 25 outs of a 4-2 victory.Closer Cody Allen has blown only one save this season, and Miller remains a force — although he has already walked nine hitters in 11 2/3 innings. Those two are the only Cleveland relievers who have been remotely... [More]
Sat May 5 201812:36Indians acquire Drake from Brewers for $110,000
NEW YORK (AP) — The revolving door of Cleveland's bullpen took a turn for the fourth straight day when the Indians acquired reliever Oliver Drake from the Milwaukee Brewers for $110,000.Andrew Miller has not pitched since April 25 because of a strained left hamstring and will not come off the disabled list Sunday, the first day he is eligible.Cleveland entered Saturday with a 5.11 bullpen ERA, 28th among the 30 teams and ahead of only Minnesota (5.67) and Kansas City (6.07). Indians relievers are 3-8, a big factor in the Indians' 17-15 record. Cleveland has not found a reliable replacement for Bryan Shaw, who pitched in more than 70 games in each of the last three seasons, then left as a free agent for a $27 million, three-year contract with Colorado.Ben Taylor was brought up from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, when Matt Belisle was designated for assignment, and Ben Taylor was promoted to the big leagues on Thursday, when Nick Goody went on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation.Alexi... RHP Nick Goody has a 0.00 ERA in 17 relief appearances since being recalled April 14. "It was a relief pitcher that had options," manager Terry Francona said when they traded for Goody. "That's important. When you go to spring training, having some pitchers that have options are really valuable. The way he's pitched, he's not going anywhere. Goody goes into your bullpen and seems to get everybody out."
