Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Luke Weaver (shoulder) had his rehab assignment put on pause due to close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. It doesn't sound like Weaver tested positive, but the organization is being safe. The right-hander will not pitch until he clears all needed protocols. Weaver has been sidelined since mid-May because of a right rotator cuff strain. Possibly, Weaver has some deep league value down the stretch, but it's uncertain when he'll return to the big league roster.

PHOENIX (AP) — Exasperated by a run of brutal baseball, the Arizona Diamondbacks shook up their coaching staff in an effort to stabilize their season. D-backs manager Torey Lovullo fired hitting coach Darnell Coles and assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske on Thursday with the team struggling to score runs and mired in a 5-30 stretch dating back to May 4. “I’m not pinning it on one person or one group because we’re all in this together,” Lovullo said. “But we’ve seen 40 days of the type of offensive production that wasn’t meeting our standards and obviously well below average. PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Luke Weaver's no-hit bid ended with one out in the seventh inning when Cincinnati's Eugenio Suárez snuck a broken-bat single up the middle. Weaver retired Nick Castellanos to start the seventh on a fly ball, then walked Joey Votto on four pitches. Suárez followed with the groundball single, which was perfectly placed between Arizona's shortstop and second baseman. The 27-year-old Weaver had a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings Sunday but hit Alex Blandino with a pitch with two outs in the sixth. The right-hander retired Tyler Naquin on a strikeout to end the inning. The Diamondbacks lead 7-0 in the seventh. The Arizona Diamondbacks are ready to open the season in familiar fashion: with Mad Bum on the mound. Madison Bumgarner was tabbed by manager Torey Lovullo to make his second straight opening day start for the Diamondbacks on Thursday at San Diego. The 31-year-old four-time All-Star struggled last season — his first in Arizona — going 1-4 with a 6.48 ERA. He was 2-1 with a 6.35 ERA in three spring starts, including allowing six earned runs against Cincinnati on Friday. But Bumgarner, who signed a five-year, $85 million contract before last season, will still lead off a Diamondbacks rotation that includes Merrill Kelly, Caleb Smith, Taylor Widener and Luke Weaver.
