Fri Sep 17 202123:13Michael Lorenzen Picks Up Fourth Save
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Michael Lorenzen allowed one run in the ninth inning in a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. Lorenzen struck out one on the way to picking up his fourth save of the season. The veteran right-hander hit a batter before giving up an RBI single to Matt Beaty but he then got Albert Pujols to line out to end the game. Lorenzen now has a 1-2 record, 3.18 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, four saves, and 20 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings of work. He has been operating behind normal closer Mychal Givens of late but Lorenzen should see the occasional save chance going forward, as he did on Friday.

Sun Aug 22 202120:59Michael Lorenzen Picks Up Save On Sunday
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Michael Lorenzen threw a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a 3-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Sunday. Lorenzen worked around a two-out walk to get Lewis Brinson to ground out to end the game, earning his second save in as many days. The closer role in the Cincy bullpen has been tricky to figure out of late. Just when it appeared that Mychal Givens had emerged as the preferred option for save chances in August, Lorenzen has overshadowed him over the past two days. Lorenzen has now thrown 13 1/3 scoreless innings with a 0.98 WHIP and 12 strikeouts on the year. Fantasy gamers hunting for saves can consider adding him in leagues.

Sat Aug 21 202122:14Michael Lorenzen Picks Up Save On Saturday
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Michael Lorenzen got the final five outs of a 7-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Saturday. He did not allow a run while striking out one on the way to earning his second save of the season. After dealing with injuries for much of the season, Lorenzen has been excellent over his 11 appearances, posting 12 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out 12. The Reds have been mostly using Mychal Givens in save chances over the past month but Lorenzen could work his way into the committee going forward.

Wed Aug 4 202119:59Michael Lorenzen Picks Up Save Wednesday
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Michael Lorenzen got the final five outs of a 6-5 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday to pick up his first save of the season. Lorenzen worked around two hits allowed and struck out three to preserve the victory for his team. The save comes on just Lorenzen's fifth appearance of the season as he has dealt with shoulder and hamstring injuries this season. Lorenzen getting the save opportunity is notable as closer Heath Hembree has been struggling of late, blowing a save on Tuesday and allowing at least a run in each of his past four appearances. Lorenzen could be in line for more save chances moving forward and is worth a waiver add as a result.

Fri Jul 30 202118:15Michael Lorenzen Activated From IL Friday
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Michael Lorenzen was activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday. The Reds optioned right-hander Tony Santillan to Triple-A in a corresponding move. Lorenzen injured his right hamstring while running the bases during his season debut back on July 17. It has been a tough year for Lorenzen, who missed the first half of the season with a shoulder strain and got injured again in his lone appearance. Lorenzen will bolster a revamped Cincinnati bullpen as they look to remain in contention over the final two months of the season. Santillan performed admirably for the Reds but he will head back to the minors with a 4.24 ERA over 23 1/3 innings of work.

Wed Jul 28 202118:48Michael Lorenzen Expected To Return Soon
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Michael Lorenzen (hamstring) could rejoin the team in the next seven-to-10-day, general manager Nick Krall told reporters on Wednesday. Lorenzen strained his hamstring on July 17, his first appearance of the season after suffering a shoulder strain during spring training that sidelined him for three months. In his only game this season, the 29-year-old registered two strikeouts and one walk through one inning pitched. Krall also said he expects reliever Lucas Sims (elbow) to return within two weeks if his rehab assignment continues to go as planned and for reliever Tejay Antone (forearm) to return after that.

Wed Jul 14 202113:30Reds heat up, chipping away at Brewers' lead in NL Central
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati start the second half of the season the same way they ended the first — with Nick Castellanos and the Reds hoping to pick up where they left off. After Castellanos and the resurgent Reds won three out of four in Milwaukee last weekend to pull within four games of the NL Central-leading Brewers, the schedule matches them up again for a three-game set in Cincinnati right after the All-Star break. In the last two games the Reds scored go-ahead runs in the ninth inning off All-Star closer Josh Hader. Cincinnati’s spare-parts bullpen has struggled for much of the season but suddenly looked unbeatable. The Reds are sizzling in July, winning nine of 11 since dropping a rain-shortened game to the Padres on June 30. Cincinnati won the series finale with San Diego on July 1, swept the Cubs and took two out of three from Kansas City before besting the Brewers. Eugenio Suarez, hitting just .175, homered to lead off the Reds ninth Saturday night... [More]
Tue Mar 30 202115:35Akiyama, Gray among hurting Reds who will miss opening day
Spring training took its toll on the Cincinnati Reds, and some key players who suffered injuries won't be back in time for Thursday's opener. Outfielder Shogo Akiyama (hamstring), and pitchers Sonny Gray (back) and Michael Lorenzen (shoulder strain) will miss the opener but aren't expected to be sidelined too long after that. The good news is first baseman Joey Votto, who missed 13 days of spring training with COVID-19, has eased his way back, hit the ball well and looked solid in the field during the final spring training games. He appears to be in position to start on opening day for the 13th consecutive season, but that decision has yet to be made. Outfielder Nick Senzel also is expected to be on manager David Bell's lineup card Thursday after dealing with a groin strain this spring. Tejay Antone, who was a candidate for Cincinnati's starting rotation, was hampered by minor groin and hip issues. He didn't get enough innings to earn a starting role but is expected to be fine for bullpen... [More]
Fri Mar 19 202121:22Castillo set to start for Reds on opening day vs Cardinals
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Luis Castillo is set to start on opening day for the Cincinnati Reds, heading a rotation that lost NL Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer to free agency. “Luis is as ready as he's ever been,” manager David Bell said Friday at the Reds' spring training complex. The Reds open the season April 1 at home against the St. Louis Cardinals. Castillo has seen limited action in spring training, pitching in two games so far and giving up no runs and five hits in five innings with three strikeouts. He's coming off a 2020 season in which he was 4-6 with a 3.21 ERA in 70 innings with 89 strikeouts. The 28-year-old Castillo was the Reds' opening day starter in 2019. He finished 15-8 with a 3.40 ERA and was selected to the NL All-Star team. “I did it once but to do it twice is just as special,” Castillo said through an interpreter. “The first thing I did was hug the manager and call my family.” Bell said the other Cincinnati starters are still to be determined, with decisions likely... Sonny Gray, who started the opener in 2020, is the likely No. 2. Wade Miley, Tyler Mahle, Tejay Antone and Michael Lorenzen are the top candidates. Bauer signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers after going 5-4 with a 1.73 ERA during the pandemic-shortened season and helping the Reds reach the playoffs as a wild-card team. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sat Mar 6 202100:35Ohtani fans 5 in return to mound; Harper HR on 1st swing
Shohei Ohtani figured he’d be careful in his return to the mound after two injury-spoiled seasons. A few batters in, the Los Angeles Angels’ two-way sensation reached back for a little extra — and brought back some of the buzz that surrounded his major league debut three years ago. Ohtani reached 100 mph with his fastball and showed off his signature splitter while striking out five over 1 2/3 innings in the Angels’ 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics on Friday. The right-hander allowed a run, three hits and two walks, struggling to command his slider but showcasing the arm strength and stuff that allowed him to dominate in the majors before Tommy John surgery in 2018. “Since this was my first game, I wasn’t planning on letting it go in the beginning, especially early in counts,” Ohtani said via translator. “As the game went on, I felt better and I started throwing harder, but I think that led to me cutting the ball a couple times, so it’s something I have to work on.” The 26-year-old Japanese... Fri Feb 19 202113:43Bauer-less Reds fall back on the familiar for rotation
The Cincinnati Reds will go into the 2021 season without two of last year’s most important pitchers — National League Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer and closer Raisel Iglesias. How manager David Bell will work around those blockbuster departures is the overriding question as his pitchers begin throwing this week during spring training. Without major offseason additions, the cost-conscious Reds are going to have to count on getting more out of some of the guys who have been around a while. Bell is fine with that. Enthusiastic, even. “We see our rotation as a strength,” he said. “Obviously we lost Trevor, and we all know what a significant loss that is, but to be able to say our rotation is still a strength is pretty impressive, with the depth that we have.” At the front of the Cincinnati staff will be some familiar names: 2020 opening-day starter Sonny Gray (5-3, 3.70 ERA) and Luis Castillo (4-6, 3.21), who started the opener in 2019. With Anthony DeSclafani also moving on, Tyler Mahle... [More]
Sat Jan 16 202101:28Lorenzen, Castillo among 6 to reach deals with Reds
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds reached one-year deals with all six of their arbitration-eligible players on Friday, agreeing with pitcher and outfielder Michael Lorenzen at $4,437,500 and with right-hander Luis Castillo at $4.2 million. Cincinnati also agreed with outfielder Jesse Winker at $3.15 million, right-hander Tyler Mahle at $2.2 million, left-hander Amir Garrett at $1.5 million and right-hander Noé Ramirez at $1,175,000. With Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer expected to sign elsewhere and depending on other offseason moves the Reds make, Lorenzen could be a candidate for the starting rotation. The 29-year-old righty is 22-21 with a 3.97 ERA in five seasons with Cincinnati. He can also play outfield and pinch hit. He was 3-1 with a 4.21 ERA in 18 games in 2020. He collected $1,379,630 from a prorated $3,725,000 salary. Castillo, 28, had a breakout season in 2019, earning the nod as opening day starter, making the All-Star team and finishing 15-8 with a 3.40 ERA and 226 strikeouts... [More]

ATLANTA (AP) — Pablo Sandoval is on the Atlanta Braves' roster for the NL wild-card series against the Cincinnati Reds. The 2012 World Series MVP joined the Braves after being released by the San Francisco Giants a couple of weeks ago.
