RHP Hisashi Iwakuma is scheduled to throw a simulated game Sunday, Mariners manager Scott Servais said. Iwakuma, who has been on the 10-day disabled list since May 4 with inflammation in his right shoulder, threw a 50-pitch bullpen session Thursday. "He felt much better and the ball was coming out of his hand better," Servais said. "He walked off (the mound) with a smile on his face."

He labored through his side (session) last time.I was really unsure how it was going to be, but it was good. He threw 30 (pitches); he bumped the intensity up." Stottlemyre said the pan is for Iwakuma to throw another bullpen session with a bit more intensity, throw breaking pitches in addition to fastballs and changeups and if he is alright the following day, move on to a simulated game.

LHP Ariel Miranda (3-2) will start in his place when Seattle opens a two-game series against the Phillies. The Mariners are hopeful Iwakuma will be ready to go on Thursday in Toronto.

A's 3B Trevor Plouffe hit a solo home run off Iwakuma in the fifth inning and 1B Yonder Alonso hit a solo blast off him in the sixth. "They got to those pitches," Iwakuma said of the home runs. "Especially the slider that was up in the zone to (Plouffe) and the other home run to Alonso was up and in, but he put a good swing on it. Tip your cap. Those are the pitches that cost us the game."

RHP Hisashi Iwakuma lasted only three innings and 52 pitches. It was his shortest start of the season. The last time he didn't make it past the third inning also came against the Rangers, last August, when he gave up five runs to Sunday's six.

Iwakuma permitted three hits in his first five-plus innings Tuesday night against the Houston Astros, but two of those hits were solo homers. The veteran of 11 seasons in Japan's Pacific League took the loss after conceding two runs, four hits and three walks in his six innings while recording two strikeouts.

RHP Hisashi Iwakuma tossed his third consecutive quality start against the Astros and has a 1.42 ERA during that span dating back to July 16, 2016. In his career at Minute Maid Park, Iwakuma has a 3.23 ERA over nine starts. His 72 quality starts since 2013 are tied for 10th in the American League.
