Aminu has started in all three of the preseason games in which he's appeared for the Trail Blazers and is averaging 12.7 points, six rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.3 blocks in 30.8 minutes per game.

The forward is struggling to find his stroke from the outside (3-for-12 from three-point range in preseason play), but he's managed to make up for that deficiency by hitting the glass hard and making an impact as a shot blocker. He'll likely serve as the small forward on most occasions for Portland, while occasionally moving over to the four spot when C.J. McCollum spells Damian Lillard at point guard. It's not clear how Blazers coach Terry Stotts plans on ordering his rotation behind Aminu, but Mo Harkless and Allen Crabbe look like the leading candidates to see time at small forward with the second unit.

Aminu appears in line to start at small forward for the Blazers this season after general manager Neil Olshey listed Aminu amongst Damian Lillard, C.J. McCollum, Meyers Leonard, and Mason Plumlee on the Lowe Post podcast. "We believe that Damian Lillard, C.J. McCollum, Al-Farouq Aminu, Meyers Leonard, and Mason Plumlee ... can do what [our young core did when I was with the Clippers]," Olshey said.

Olshey used to be the general manager of the Clippers when they had Eric Bledsoe, DeAndre Jordan, Aminu, and Blake Griffin all playing together, and Olshey was trying to make the point that this new young Blazers roster is built to grow on Lillard's career trajectory, similar to how the Clippers were built to grow around Griffin. It's good to hear what the team's plan is, because it gives us a better understanding of how the rotations might fall, which helps project fantasy value. Though Maurice Harkless and Alan Crabbe's place on the roster makes Aminu's value still somewhat suspect, there are plenty of reasons to think Aminu is in position to have a career season and possibly a good enough one to make him worth drafting in the later rounds of standard leagues right now. Through 12 games in February last season, Aminu played 24 minutes per game, averaging 7.6 points, 0.8 three-pointers, 6.6 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.5 blocks. Ultimately, it looks like Aminu will end up producing stats similar to what a poor man's Nerlens Noel might put up, despite them playing different positions.
