Wed Apr 11 201820:23LeBron James plays all 82 games for first time in career
CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James has added another first to his remarkable career by playing in all 82 games.James, who has broken personal and NBA records all season, played 81 games for Cleveland in 2008-09, but then-coach Mike Brown sat him for the Cavs' regular-season finale to get rested for the playoffs. The 33-year-old James never made playing every game a goal, but he accomplished the feat Wednesday night when the Cavs hosted the New York Knicks. In his 15th season, James will finish leading the league in points and minutes played. He entered the finale averaging 27.7 points with career-highs in assists (9.2) assists and rebounds (8.7). He's not expected to be named MVP as Houston's James Harden remains the favorite.James will also lead the Cavs in total points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.Earlier this season, James eclipsed 30,000 career points and went past Michael Jordan's record (866) by scoring in double digits in consecutive games. That mark is now at 872 games.___For more AP NBA coverage: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball
Wed Apr 11 201810:33It's the last day of the NBA season, with much to decide
MIAMI (AP) — The end has arrived.Actually, for Atlanta, Phoenix, Dallas and Charlotte, the end came in their season finales Tuesday. There are nine teams that know Wednesday is the last day of their season. And 15 teams already have clinched playoff berths. Then there are Minnesota and Denver.Game 82 for both teams will have a Game 7-of-the-playoffs feel, which is a fitting way to transition from the regular season to the postseason. Nuggets at Timberwolves, winner to the playoffs, loser to the offseason. It's the first time since 1997 — and only the third time since the NBA went to this postseason format in 1983 — that two teams will play on the season's final day in such a situation."It's bigger than all of us," Wolves star Karl-Anthony Towns said.Minnesota is trying to get into the playoffs for the first time since 2004 — the longest current drought in the NBA. Denver — winner of six straight to give itself this chance — is trying to get to the postseason for the first time since 2013.So... [More]

Wed Apr 11 201802:53The MVP votes are due, and let the annual debate begin
The argument happens most every year. Who is the NBA MVP?LeBron James has been the best player for most of his 15 years in the league, and he's won the award only four times. Russell Westbrook won it last year, buoyed by averaging a triple-double, yet seems to not even be in the conversation this season with very similar numbers. James Harden was a popular pick last season, saw his assist and rebound numbers dip this season, yet is generally considered the runaway favorite.Part of the issue is this: There's no clarity on how the MVP is defined. No one knows the criteria. The award ballot sent to MVP voters simply says "The winner of this award receives the Maurice Podoloff Trophy, named after the first Commissioner of the NBA."Is it the player most valuable to his team?Is it the player most valuable to the game?Is it the best player? Those are only some of the many gray areas.Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers has said many times over the years that James would win annually, if not for... Mon Apr 9 201802:52D'Antoni, Harden and Paul poised to capture trio's 1st title
HOUSTON (AP) — Chris Paul has a long history of playoff heartbreak. So does James Harden. And Mike D'Antoni has more than either of them combined.Separately, they've never gotten it done at playoff time. Together, their fortunes might change. They've led the Houston Rockets to the NBA's best record going into these playoffs, and in a league that Golden State and Cleveland have dominated in recent years, it may not be overly surprising to see the Paul-Harden-D'Antoni triumvirate win it all this spring. With two regular-season games left, the Rockets have already piled up a franchise-record 64 wins to secure the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. But this group — perhaps fueled by past playoff shortcomings — knows it has much more work to do."The ultimate goal is holding that trophy up," Harden said. "So until we do that there's no celebrations ... we haven't done anything yet."D'Antoni, who'll turn 67 next month and would be the oldest coach to win an NBA title if Houston gets it done, has... Wed Apr 4 201809:47Raptors-Celtics, Cavs-76ers are big East games this week
Philadelphia wants to open the playoffs at home. Toronto wants home-court advantage all the way to the NBA Finals. How they get through some marquee games this week will go a long way in determining if they reach those goals. For the Raptors, it's a game Wednesday against the team right behind them. For the red-hot 76ers, it's the one just in front of them: LeBron James and the reigning East champs from Cleveland on Friday.Toronto hosts Boston, with both teams playing for the second straight night. The Raptors lost Tuesday in Cleveland and Boston later fell in Milwaukee, keeping the Raptors two games ahead with five to play.A win Wednesday and the Raptors will be on the verge of locking up the No. 1 seed. Lose their third consecutive game, and the door stays open for Boston to grab it for the second straight season. The Celtics trimmed three games off their deficit during a six-game winning streak that was snapped Tuesday, and would clinch the head-to-head tiebreaker with a win Wednesday."It's... [More]

CLEVELAND (AP) — Still chasing championships, LeBron James caught — and passed — Michael Jordan on one list.James broke Jordan's NBA record by scoring at least 10 points in his 867th straight regular-season game, a streak the Cavaliers superstar could make nearly untouchable by the end of his brilliant career.James entered Friday's game against New Orleans sharing the mark with Jordan, one of his boyhood heroes. Wed Mar 28 201812:00LeBron James has a favorite for the MVP award - himself
MIAMI (AP) — LeBron James has someone in mind for the MVP award this season.Himself.This is a season where prohibitive MVP favorite James Harden has done phenomenal things with NBA-leading Houston, where reigning MVP Russell Westbrook has been fantastic again for Oklahoma City, and where Anthony Davis has found a new stratosphere to take his game, especially after New Orleans lost DeMarcus Cousins.James raves about them all. But ..."I would vote for me," James told The Associated Press. "The body of work, how I'm doing it, what's been happening with our team all year long, how we've got so many injuries and things of that nature, guys in and out, to be able to still keep this thing afloat, I definitely would vote me."It's not an unreasonable take. His numbers this season compare favorably — or exceed — the five-season run between 2008-09 and 2012-13 where he won the MVP award four times. His averages then: 27.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.3 assists on 52 percent shooting while playing 38... [More]

Thu Mar 22 201816:38March memo: LeBron, Cavs send message with win over Raptors
CLEVELAND (AP) — The drama has included turmoil and trades, head-scratching losses, infighting, injuries and illness.Cleveland's stormy season seems extracted from the script of a scandalous TV soap opera — "All My Cavaliers."But just when it looked as if LeBron James and this group of Cavaliers, some of whom have yet to play together, were about to implode with the postseason in sight, a startling win may have turned them around."I always say there is one game during the season that changes your team," acting coach Larry Drew said following Cleveland's 132-129 win over Toronto. "That game can be early, it can be midway, it can be late. There's always one game that kind of changes your team, the mindset."And I really believe tonight's game might have done that for us."With James on a mission to remind the Raptors of his magnificence, the short-handed Cavs, missing five rotational players and coach Tyronn Lue, rallied from a 15-point deficit in the second half Wednesday night to stun the... Sun Mar 18 201818:34NBA fines Pelicans coach Gentry for criticizing officiating
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry has been fined $15,000 by the NBA for publicly criticizing the league's officiating following New Orleans' 107-101 loss to Houston on Saturday night. The punishment was announced Sunday by Kiki VanDeWeghe, the league's executive vice president for basketball operations.Gentry, who also had been assessed a technical foul during the game, lambasted a decision to award free throws to the Rockets' James Harden after a missed 3-pointer about midway through the fourth quarter.Harden threw his arms toward New Orleans' Jrue Holiday as he went up for the shot. Holiday, Gentry and the crowd were furious with the call. Gentry claimed he saw Harden wink after the foul was called. He demonstratively walked away from official David Guthrie and sat on the bench. The foul gave Harden four free throws. He made three to put Houston ahead.Gentry says Guthrie guessed on the call, unduly influencing the outcome of a game with playoff implications. Gentry also criticized officials for not calling fouls when Pelicans All-Star Anthony Davis is grabbed by defenders while moving without the ball on the offensive end.Gentry, who revisited the matter Sunday before New Orleans hosted Boston, says he expected to be fined and that "it's time to move on."The coach says Pelicans cannot "play the victim card."___More NBA basketball: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball
Thu Mar 8 201818:22Lillard leads Portland on its latest late-season surge
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Damian Lillard says the Portland Trail Blazers reach out to him before he reaches team milestones, just to give him a heads up.The only problem? Lillard doesn't read his emails.Lillard joked about it after his latest achievement: He surpassed Clifford Robinson on the Blazers' all-time scoring list, moving into fourth, in Portland's victory over the Knicks on Tuesday. Lillard, in his sixth NBA season, has 10,433 points."The team, I think they send me emails when something's coming up, but I never check my email," he said. "I never know unless I happen to see it on Twitter or until after I do it and somebody mentions it."Robinson was sure to get Lillard's attention, sending his sentiments over Twitter."Congrats @Dame_Lillard! Trust, I know what it takes to put yourself in that position. Keep putting that work in young fella!" Robinson tweeted.Lillard has certainly been putting in the work over the Blazers' current winning streak, which has stretched to a season-best... [More]
Wed Mar 7 201802:51With hot teams, Davis, Lillard hot names in MVP discussion
With the Houston Rockets on top of the NBA and James Harden on top of the scoring race, he may be running away with the MVP vote.Anthony Davis and Damian Lillard might have something to say about that. With stellar play steering their sizzling teams, they have at least entered their names in the conversation with a little more than a month left in the regular season.Harden has been runner-up to Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook in recent years, but it's looked like his time this season. With more than 31 points and nearly nine assists per game — third in the league in that category — for a team with the league's best record, it's hard to imagine needing to look elsewhere."What Harden and Houston is doing right now, he's the MVP of the league right now," Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas said on NBA TV.Davis and Lillard could deserve some thought.Davis has carried New Orleans with dominant basketball since DeMarcus Cousins was lost for the season last month. The Western Conference player of the... [More]
