Mozgov is out for Thursday's preseason contest against the 76ers.

The Cavaliers are resting several key players Thursday, including Mozgov, Lebron James, and J.R. Smith, so there are no worries about Mozgov's status heading into the regular season.

Mozgov (knee) played 21 minutes in the Cavs' preseason opener against the Hawks, scoring 13 points (6-7 FG, 1-2 FT) and reeling in five boards.

Mozgov isn't feeling any discomfort in his right knee after undergoing a debridement procedure during the offseason, positioning him to fill the starting center role for the Cavaliers when the regular season opens. The big man was a key contributor to the Cavs' run to the NBA Finals last spring, averaging 26.5 minutes per game during the playoffs, but the returns of Anderson Varejao and Kevin Love from injury could result in a small decline in Mozgov's playing time in 2015-16.

Mozgov said at Monday's Media Day that he'll be ready for the team's opener on October 27, Chris Haynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Mozgov had his knee cleaned up back in July, but he said he's nearing full strength and does not expect to be limited when the regular season begins. The 29-year-old excelled with the Cavs after a mid-season trade from Denver, averaging 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting a career-best 59 percent from the floor, up from 50.4 percent in 35 games with the Nuggets. With Anderson Varejao (Achilles) expected back in the fold, Mozgov could see a bit more competition for minutes, but the Tristan Thompson contract situation is ultimately of more consequence. If the two sides are unable to reach an agreement, a holdout could be in Thompson's future, which would obviously clear the way for a larger role for Mozgov.

Mozgov underwent a debridement on his right knee Thursday and will require six weeks of recovery, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Mozgov's rehabilitation shouldn't afflict his ability to be healthy by training camp, but his progress will be watched throughout the course of the offseason. Despite the signings of Kevin Love (shoulder) and Tristan Thompson, Mozgov is set to act as the Cavaliers' starting center in 2015-16. After joining the team in January, Mozgov started all but one of his 46 regular-season appearances, averaging 10.6 points (on 59 percent shooting), 6.9 rebounds, 1.2 blocks, and 0.8 assists in 25 minutes.

Mozgov had his $4.9 million team option exercised Tuesday, Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders reports.

The decision is a no-brainer for the Cavaliers, who are more than happy to bring back Mozgov at an extremely team-friendly price. The big man came over from the Nuggets mid-season and started 45 regular season games, averaging 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting a career-best 59 percent from the floor. The Cavs will get Anderson Varejao (Achilles) back from injury next season, but Mozgov figures to open the season as the starting center after a strong postseason showing.

Mozgov averaged 10.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in 26.5 minutes in the Cavalier playoff run. These numbers were similar to his regular season averages (10.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.2 blocks).

Coach David Blatt had little recourse against the Warriors and had to go big with Mozgov and Tristan Thompson throughout the series. Mozgov was able to take advantage of his size with four games of 16 or more points (and three double-doubles). The 28-year-old center has a reasonable team option for the 2015-16 and could continue to be the anchor of the Cavalier defense.

Mozgov scored 17 points (5-8 FG, 7-8 FT), grabbed 12 rebounds, blocked four shots, and registered two assists in 33 minutes during Tuesday's Game 6 loss.

Mozgov was given a longer leash after playing just nine minutes the previous game, and he rewarded coach Blatt with seven offensive boards. For the series, Mozgov averaged 14.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in 28.3 minutes per game.

Mozgov missed his only field goal attempt in nine minutes during Sunday's Game 5 loss.

Mozgov recorded one steal and two turnovers in the limited run and didn't start the second half. Coach David Blatt turned to J.R. Smith in Mozgov's place, a decision that stuck throughout.

Mozgov scored a career-high and team-high 28 points (9-16 FG, 10-12 FT) in 33 minutes on Thursday. He added 10 rebounds, one assist, and one steal in the Game 4 loss.

Mozgov took advantage of the Warriors' lineup change that shifted Draymond Green to center, limited Andrew Bogut to three minutes, and marginalized Festus Ezeli. Mozgov was the tallest player on the court all night and scored all but two of his points in the paint or at the free-throw line.

Mozgov came through with 17 points (5-8 FG, 7-12 FT) and 11 rebounds in the win over Golden State on Sunday. He played 29 minutes.

Mozgov has been able to score effectively against Andrew Bogut (who may have one eye on LeBron James). He has 33 points in the first two games of the series. Mozgov generally does not play when the Warriors go small, so his minutes have a 33-minute ceiling.
