Mon Apr 16 201820:50Rajon Rondo has a knack for performing in the playoffs
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Rajon Rondo is healthy and he's locked in.That's good news for the New Orleans Pelicans, not so much for the Portland Trail Blazers. When Rondo is locked in during the postseason, the 6-foot-1 guard who won an NBA title with the Boston Celtics has shown he can be a tough out.Over the course of his career, Rondo has averaged 10.5 points, 8.5 assists and 4.8 rebounds. Comparatively in the playoffs, he has averaged 14.3 points, 9.2 assists and six rebounds per game. Not that he is buying into the Playoff Rondo hype, however."There's a lot of factors into that. I don't think you can break it down as simple as one or two things," Rondo said after practice Monday. "The interview would probably be too long for me to break it down completely. It's a matter of me being healthy, minutes, my teammates trusting me, my coaching staff trusting me."I think we, as a team, we're playing pretty good under pressure."They are indeed.Rondo dished out 17 assists in Game 1 of the series,... Mon Apr 16 201818:40Blazers seek tie vs Pelicans, Raptors aim for rare 2-0 lead
The Portland Trail Blazers fought their way through a pressure-packed playoff race to earn home-court advantage in a series, then lost it in one game. The Toronto Raptors know that problem all too well, so they want to take advantage of playing from ahead for a change. They try for their first 2-0 playoff series lead ever Tuesday night against Washington, while the Trail Blazers try to even things up in against the New Orleans Pelicans.Boston and Milwaukee play the other Game 2 on Tuesday after the Celtics pulled out a 113-107 overtime victory on Sunday. The No. 3 Trail Blazers were the highest-seeded team to lose so far, falling 97-95 on Saturday. Anthony Davis was dominant, Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum were slow-starting, and the Pelicans got a couple big defensive plays down the stretch from Jrue Holiday to hold on after the Blazers nearly came back from a 19-point deficit."I think it puts some pressure on us," Lillard said. "You know, you come in with home court, the first two games... [More]
Fri Apr 13 201816:39Lillard likes matchup but knows Pelicans are dangerous
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Portland's Damian Lillard says he likes the first-round matchup against the Pelicans, but in almost the same breath he lists the reasons why New Orleans is dangerous. After splitting their four regular-season meetings, the third-seeded Blazers and sixth-seeded Pelicans open the playoffs Saturday night at the Moda Center."They stole one from us here, and we felt like that was a game that we should have had. We had a bad third quarter," Lillard said. "But they have Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday, Rondo, E'Twaun Moore, they've got a lot of guys that make them a dangerous team."The Blazers won the season's first meeting with New Orleans, 103-93, back in October. But two months later the Pelicans beat the Blazers 123-116 in Portland without Davis. DeMarcus Cousins had 38 points and New Orleans extended its lead to as many as 18 points in the third quarter. The Pelicans lost Cousins for the season because of an Achilles injury in January, and many thought the team's playoff hopes... MIAMI (AP) — LeBron James has someone in mind for the MVP award this season.Himself.This is a season where prohibitive MVP favorite James Harden has done phenomenal things with NBA-leading Houston, where reigning MVP Russell Westbrook has been fantastic again for Oklahoma City, and where Anthony Davis has found a new stratosphere to take his game, especially after New Orleans lost DeMarcus Cousins.James raves about them all. But ..."I would vote for me," James told The Associated Press. "The body of work, how I'm doing it, what's been happening with our team all year long, how we've got so many injuries and things of that nature, guys in and out, to be able to still keep this thing afloat, I definitely would vote me."It's not an unreasonable take. His numbers this season compare favorably — or exceed — the five-season run between 2008-09 and 2012-13 where he won the MVP award four times. His averages then: 27.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.3 assists on 52 percent shooting while playing 38... [More]

Wed Mar 21 201819:18Pelicans guard Holiday returns from flu vs. Pacers
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry says guard Jrue Holiday has recovered enough from flu symptoms to play Wednesday night against the Indiana Pacers.Gentry says the Pelicans are fortunate that Holiday, who missed Tuesday night's victory over Dallas, was able to get better so quickly. The combo guard is averaging 19.1 points and 5.9 assists per game. He has been New Orleans' second-leading scorer, behind only All-Star forward Anthony Davis, since DeMarcus Cousins went out for the season with a torn Achilles in late January.Meanwhile, Gentry says small forward Solomon Hill will get the night off to rest so he can return against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday, which will be New Orleans third game in three consecutive nights.Hill is just two games into his comeback from hamstring surgery last August.___More NBA basketball: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball
Sun Mar 18 201818:34NBA fines Pelicans coach Gentry for criticizing officiating
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry has been fined $15,000 by the NBA for publicly criticizing the league's officiating following New Orleans' 107-101 loss to Houston on Saturday night. The punishment was announced Sunday by Kiki VanDeWeghe, the league's executive vice president for basketball operations.Gentry, who also had been assessed a technical foul during the game, lambasted a decision to award free throws to the Rockets' James Harden after a missed 3-pointer about midway through the fourth quarter.Harden threw his arms toward New Orleans' Jrue Holiday as he went up for the shot. Holiday, Gentry and the crowd were furious with the call. Gentry claimed he saw Harden wink after the foul was called. He demonstratively walked away from official David Guthrie and sat on the bench. The foul gave Harden four free throws. He made three to put Houston ahead.Gentry says Guthrie guessed on the call, unduly influencing the outcome of a game with playoff implications. Gentry also criticized officials for not calling fouls when Pelicans All-Star Anthony Davis is grabbed by defenders while moving without the ball on the offensive end.Gentry, who revisited the matter Sunday before New Orleans hosted Boston, says he expected to be fined and that "it's time to move on."The coach says Pelicans cannot "play the victim card."___More NBA basketball: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball

He then sat out Friday night against Washington, which handed the Pelicans their first loss in 11 games.Davis, who turned 25 on Sunday, is averaging 28.1 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game this season, his sixth in the NBA.He scored 40 or more points five times during New Orleans' recent franchise record-tying 10-game winning streak, including a 53-point outing.New Orleans entered Sunday's play in fourth place in the Western Conference, but only 2½ games ahead of the ninth-place Jazz.___More AP NBA: www.apnews.com/tags/NBAbasketball

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Pelicans All-Star Anthony Davis was ruled out of Friday night's game against Washington because of his sprained left ankle.Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry says he is "optimistic" about Davis' prospects for returning Sunday afternoon against Utah. Nikola Mirotic started at power forward in Davis' absence.Gentry says Davis went through pregame drills to test his ankle and did not appear ready to return from the injury, which occurred in the third quarter of Wednesday night's victory at Sacramento.Davis has averaged 28.1 points and 11.1 rebounds this season, and his production has surged during the franchise record-tying 10-game winning streak the Pelicans rode into their game against the Wizards. Wed Mar 7 201802:51With hot teams, Davis, Lillard hot names in MVP discussion
With the Houston Rockets on top of the NBA and James Harden on top of the scoring race, he may be running away with the MVP vote.Anthony Davis and Damian Lillard might have something to say about that. With stellar play steering their sizzling teams, they have at least entered their names in the conversation with a little more than a month left in the regular season.Harden has been runner-up to Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook in recent years, but it's looked like his time this season. With more than 31 points and nearly nine assists per game — third in the league in that category — for a team with the league's best record, it's hard to imagine needing to look elsewhere."What Harden and Houston is doing right now, he's the MVP of the league right now," Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas said on NBA TV.Davis and Lillard could deserve some thought.Davis has carried New Orleans with dominant basketball since DeMarcus Cousins was lost for the season last month. Wed Feb 28 201802:20Florida school tragedy leaves profound effect on Dwyane Wade
MIAMI (AP) — Joaquin Oliver was buried in a jersey bearing Dwyane Wade's name. So perhaps it was fitting that Wade's best game this season came in sneakers with Oliver's name scrawled on them. The Miami area is reeling right now, and will be for a while, in the aftermath of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. The school will reopen Wednesday, the first official day it will be in session since 17 students and teachers were killed in a Valentine's Day massacre that only cranked up the volume on the national debate over guns.Oliver was one of the 17 victims. His parents buried him in a Wade jersey. Wade is trying to meet the family, hoping to thank them, comfort them, listen to them, help them, hug them, and almost certainly cry with them."That they thought of me in that process, as something that he would have wanted, is mindboggling," the Miami Heat guard said.So is the fact that, again, Wade finds himself trying to solve a problem that apparently cannot be solved. He has been... [More]
Wed Feb 21 201803:29Are Rockets, Raptors the 1s? Time will tell when NBA resumes
Golden State and Cleveland are used to looking down at the rest of the NBA, though it's Houston and Toronto enjoying that view at the All-Star break. The Rockets and Raptors are the conference leaders and will try to keep rolling when play resumes. Houston has won 10 straight to edge past the Warriors, and Toronto is two games up in the East after seven consecutive wins. So, are the Raptors the best team in the East?"I don't know. The record says we are, but for me to sit here and say we are the best team — we have confidence, but I'm not going to sit here and say we are the best team," Toronto coach Dwane Casey said. "Right now, we're No. 1. The numbers say that."Houston coach Mike D'Antoni says the Rockets like being in the Warriors' spot, but don't talk about them — for now."Nobody's ready for that yet," he said. "So as we go forward we'll see what we got, but yeah, we would love to be the No. 1 team without a doubt."___While Commissioner Adam Silver discussed the idea of revamping the... [More]
