Mon Sep 28 202014:28Not much went right in disappointing season for Diamondbacks
PHOENIX (AP) — Madison Bumgarner was one of many reasons the Arizona Diamondbacks fell well short of expectations this season. His assessment of his own personal struggles on the mound a few weeks ago summed up the team's summer quite well. “2020 sucks,” Bumgarner said. "I'm pretty much on board with that now. Not a big fan." The Diamondbacks thought they could challenge for the NL West title this season, but instead, they were the division’s worst team. Now they’re trying to figure out what the 60-game swoon means in the long term and how much they need to reshape the roster. Arizona finished with a 25-35 record but in reality, it felt worse than that. An eight-game losing streak in the middle of the season meant the D-backs were basically out of playoff contention by September. General manager Mike Hazen turned into a seller, dealing pitchers Robbie Ray, Archie Bradley and Andrew Chafin, along with outfielder Starling Marte. It was a stunning change of course considering how confident... [More]

Thu Oct 24 201901:05Astros issue 1st intentional walk, Nats bust loose in Game 2
HOUSTON (AP) — At this rate, AJ Hinch might never issue another intentional walk the rest of his life.Hard to blame the Houston manager for his decision Wednesday night, and the mess that followed in Game 2 of the World Series. But it did seem as though the baseball gods were getting the last laugh.Because right after Hinch ordered an intentional pass for the first time all year — the Astros were the only major league team to go through an entire season without one since they've been tracked — things went awry against Washington."Ironically, I thought it was our best chance to limit their scoring," Hinch said, "and instead it poured gasoline on a fire that was already burning."As soon as clutch-hitting slugger Juan Soto shucked his bat and trotted to first without seeing a pitch from Ryan Pressly, loading the bases with two outs and Washington ahead by a run in the seventh inning, Houston kept flubbing.All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman couldn't corral a grounder, then threw away another.... Fri Oct 4 201902:47Astros set MLB record with zero intentional walks in 2019
HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros share a division with the American League's most intentionally walked player in Angels star Mike Trout. But despite Trout facing the Astros as much as any team in the league, none of his 14 intentional walks this season came against Houston. That's because manager A.J. Hinch didn't intentionally walk anyone this season, making the Astros the first team in MLB history to finish a year with zero intentional walks.Hinch said many factors played into Houston setting this record."Some of it is comfort with what I've learned on adding runners on base for free," he said. "Some of it has been pure luck on not having situations that have come up to where I play a National League game and I want to walk the eight-hole hitter to get to the pitcher or call it (Christian) Yelich, Trout and MVP-caliber players being up at the wrong time with a base where I should walk them. But most of it has just been out of the pure education of what that does to run-scoring and run-prevention."Intentional... [More]

Fri Feb 15 201916:31Roberto Osuna to close for Houston Astros
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Roberto Osuna will close for the Houston Astros."I can pretend and create some false competition, and that doesn't gain any credibility," manager A.J. Hinch said. "Transparency goes a long way, and maybe the closer question can be put to rest."Hinch used Ken Giles, Hector Rondon and Luke Gregerson to finish games during his first four seasons before the Astros acquired Osuna from Toronto last summer."I think the league has graduated to the point of, you can say somebody's your closer and use him in the seventh or eighth inning and people don't freak out," Hinch said. "It's amazing how the sport has evolved to where one word doesn't mean that he has to pitch exactly in that role every single time."Houston initially eased Osuna into the closer's role after acquiring him at last season's trading deadline for Giles, David Paulino and a minor leaguer. The trade occurred just before the end of Osuna's 75-game suspension under Major League Baseball's domestic violence... [More]
