Wed Jan 3121:57Joe Smith Announces His Retirement
Right-handed reliever Joe Smith announced his retirement from professional baseball on Wednesday via Excel Baseball. Smith did not pitch at all in 2023 and had a 4.61 ERA (6.29 FIP) and 1.54 WHIP while walking nine and striking out 17 in only 27 1/3 relief innings with the Minnesota Twins in 2022. The 39-year-old veteran was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the third round in 2006 out of Wright State. He never made an All-Star team, but when it was all said and done, Smith had a pretty solid 15-year big-league career, going 55-34 with a 3.14 ERA (3.66 FIP), a 1.19 WHIP, 30 saves, 254 walks and 666 strikeouts in 726 1/3 relief innings with the Mets, Guardians, Angels, Cubs, Blue Jays, Astros, Mariners and Twins. In 2014 with the Angels, Smith had a 1.81 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and a career-high 15 saves.

Sun Jun 26 202213:33Joe Smith Placed On 15-Day Injured List
The Minnesota Twins placed relief pitcher Joe Smith (neck) on the 15-day injured list with upper trapezius tightness on Sunday. The move is retroactive to June 24. The Twins called up fellow relief pitcher Jovani Moran to fill Smith's roster spot. Smith has had a solid year out of the Twins' pen. He's made 28 appearances and he's racked up 14 holds while pitching to a 2.78 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. However, his 4.63 xERA suggests that he's been fortunate thus far. He's also currently sporting a career-low 13.3% strikeout rate, which ranks in the bottom 6% of the league.

Sat Mar 19 202212:26Joe Smith Signs With Twins
Free-agent relief pitcher Joe Smith is signing an undisclosed deal with the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, according to a source. The 37-year-old right-hander split the 2021 season with the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners, posting a 4.99 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with 34 strikeouts and eight walks in 39 2/3 relief innings over 50 appearances. Smith took the 2020 season off due to COVID-19 and had a strong 1.80 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 25 innings for Houston back in 2019. In Minnesota, Smith will compete for a setup role alongside Tyler Duffey and Jorge Alcala in front of closer Taylor Rogers. With just nine holds in his last two seasons, Smith doesn't hold much fantasy value.

Wed Jul 28 202101:24Pirates trade lefty Tyler Anderson -- to Mariners, not Phils
SEATTLE (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates indeed traded left-hander Tyler Anderson on Tuesday to a playoff contender — the Seattle Mariners, not the Philadelphia Phillies. Earlier in the day, reports circulated the Pirates were close to sending the 31-year-old Anderson to the Phils. Instead, he wound up on the other coast, when the Mariners made their second trade of the day that involved pitching. Seattle sent a pair of minor leaguers, catcher Carter Bins and righty Joaquin Tejada, to the Pirates. Anderson is 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA in 18 starts. “We see Tyler as a solid addition to our club,” Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said. “He brings much needed depth to our rotation as we enter the final third of our schedule.” Hours before that, the Mariners traded Kendall Graveman, one of the best relievers in the majors this season, and pitcher Rafael Montero to AL West-leading Houston for infielder Abraham Toro and reliever Joe Smith. It seemed to be a puzzling move — Seattle trailed Oakland... [More]
Wed Jul 28 202100:54AP source: Mariners acquire Pirates lefty Tyler Anderson
The Seattle Mariners have acquired left-hander Tyler Anderson from Pittsburgh, a person familiar with the trade told The Associated Press, in their second deal Tuesday that involves pitching. The person spoke to the AP on condition on anonymity because there was no official announcement. Earlier in the day, reports circulated the Pirates were close to trading Anderson to Philadelphia. But the veteran 31-year-old wound up going to the other coast in a trade for prospects, joining a team in contention for an AL wild-card spot. Anderson is 5-8 with a 4.35 ERA in 18 starts. Hours earlier, the Mariners traded Kendall Graveman, one of the best relievers in the majors this season, and pitcher Rafael Montero to AL West-leading Houston for infielder Abraham Toro and reliever Joe Smith. It seemed to be a puzzling move — Seattle trailed Oakland by one game in the race for the second wild-card spot, and was within striking distance of the Astros. “It’s part of a context that’s going to be an ongoing... Tue Jul 27 202121:24Astros, Mariners pull off odd trade while facing one another
SEATTLE (AP) — The Houston Astros have landed one of the top relievers in baseball, acquiring right-hander Kendall Graveman from the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday in an odd intra-division trade while the teams were preparing to play each other. Graveman and Rafael Montero are going to the AL West-leading Astros with infielder Abraham Toro and reliever Joe Smith going back to Seattle. A teary Graveman said he was shocked by the trade, and had assumed he would be sticking with the Mariners, who'd won four straight against divisional opponents in gritty fashion. “I didn’t see it coming, but there’s always that percent of, ‘This game’s a business,’" Graveman said as he stood in front of the Astros dugout. “I’m speaking truth and honest, the way I felt is, (we're) nine games over .500 over on that side and playing pretty good ball while I was there. That takes away from the last five days, honestly, I think. But we’ll see if they bounce back.” The move bolsters a Houston bullpen that has struggled... [More]

“We are always looking to improve all aspects of the roster,” Astros general manager James Click said. “This one happens to be focused on the bullpen. But we’re not going to take any options off the table when it comes to trying to put ourselves in a position to compete for a World Series.” The move bolsters a Houston bullpen that has struggled at times and has an ERA above 4.00 this season. Graveman is 4-0 with a 0.82 ERA and 10 saves in 30 appearances this year. He missed nearly a month due to COVID-19 protocols in May and June but has been dominant on the mound. Graveman has not allowed an earned run in his... [More]

Tue Apr 6 202102:42Stanton's 471-foot slam lifts Yankees over O's 7-0
NEW YORK (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton hit a grand slam over the visitors’ bullpen that landed in the left-bleachers 471 feet from home plate, helping New York hand Baltimore its first loss this season. New York was ahead 1-0 on Aaron Judge’s fourth-inning homer when starter Jorge López (0-1) walked the bases loaded in the fifth, and Shawn Armstrong forced in a run with a walk to slumping Aaron Hicks. Stanton sent a 92 mph fastball soaring for the longest home run of the young major league season and his eighth career slam. New York improved to 8-0 when Judge and Stanton homer in the same game, including three postseason wins. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery (1-0) allowed four hits in six innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. DODGERS 10, ATHLETICS 3 OAKLAND, Calif. Sun Oct 18 202000:13Say good night to the bad guys: Astros fall short in Game 7
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Houston Astros spent this odyssey of a season as baseball's biggest villains. When Aledmys Diaz flied out with a runner on first to end Game 7 of the AL Championship Series, the bad guys finally lost. Ridiculed, roasted and ripped all year long, the Astros still summoned enough October heart and poise to reach the brink of another World Series. Manager Dusty Baker's club even came agonizingly close to matching the biggest playoff comeback in baseball history in a wild ALCS. Although they couldn't quite conjure one more incredible postseason feat, this playoff run should be a source of pride for these Astros long after the boos stop. Although if fans are allowed back in most stadiums in 2021, this tarnished franchise probably won't hear the end of 2020 anytime soon. Houston fell behind early and never caught up in a 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay in Game 7 on Saturday night, coming up short of an astonishing series comeback after three consecutive victories. After winning two... [More]
Wed Jul 15 202019:20Astros planning to be without reliever Smith this season
HOUSTON (AP) — Manager Dusty Baker doesn’t expect reliever Joe Smith to play for the Houston Astros this season. Smith has not reported to camp because of what general manager James Click called concerns for the safety of his family. Smith was placed on the restricted list Tuesday night, but he has not said publicly if he is opting out of the season, which starts for the Astros on July 24. “He’s welcome to come back,” Baker said Wednesday. “But right now we’re planning to go on without Joe. He’s a big part of this club. The guys miss Joe. But we know that ... every man has to do what they have to do.”Players have the option of not playing this season amid the coronavirus pandemic, but will only receive their salary and service time if they are labeled high-risk. Smith’s mother Lee Smith has Huntington’s disease, which causes the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain. The 36-year-old Smith has spent the last two seasons with the Astros and signed a two-year, $8 million contract to stay with the team this off-season. He missed part of last season recovering from an Achilles tendon injury, but returned to appear in 28 games with a 1.80 ERA.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astos shortstop Carlos Correa is so serious about not contracting the coronavirus that he’s asked his wife, Daniella, a former pageant queen, to stay out of beauty salons until the season is over.“When I talk to my wife she knows,” he said Sunday. “No getting your nails done. No getting your hair done right now. So we’re going to be home. We’re going to focus on the baseball season and once everything is done, then you can go to get your nails done and do everything else."Correa’s wife was Miss Texas in 2016. The pair wed in the Dominican Republic in December.Correa spoke at length after Sunday’s workout about the importance of personal responsibility among the players if they hope to get through this 60-game season, which is scheduled to begin July 23 or July 24.“We know what it takes to make the season possible,” he said. “What we’re doing is we come to work out and we go back to our houses. HOUSTON (AP) — After losing 100 games in three straight seasons, the Houston Astros are in position to become the first team to win 100 in four consecutive years.A core of José Altuve, Carlos Correa, Alex Bregman and George Springer has been supplemented with stud starting pitchers Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole and Zack Greinke, the combination leading the Astros to their second World Series appearance in three seasons."The ability to recognize when you have a chance to win — and realistically when you have a chance to win and not — I think is one of our most important responsibilities," former Boston Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said ahead of Tuesday's Series opener against Washington. "You can fool yourself one way or the other. HOUSTON (AP) — What a relief for Houston Astros pitcher Joe Smith that manager AJ Hinch was only joking about his team's makeup for the World Series."I would bring (him) in my office and pretend like he's not going to make the roster, just to get a reaction from him, and he wouldn't buy it," Hinch said.Smith has waited 13 seasons, playing for six big league teams and overcoming a ruptured left Achilles last winter, for the opportunity to pitch this late in October. He was left off the postseason roster three years ago by the Chicago Cubs, the only other team he has been with that made it to the World Series."I'm proud for him. I'm anxious to get him in the game. It will probably be one of the first games he's nervous," Hinch said.
