SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Washington Nationals have put right-handed reliever Shawn Kelley on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday because of ulnar nerve irritation in his pitching elbow.Kelley, who turns 34 on Thursday, has a history of elbow trouble and has twice come back from Tommy John surgery. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI test on his elbow when the Nationals return to Washington later this week."Same as yesterday," Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. "Hopefully he gets better soon. He's sore but he feels better."Kelley felt some irritation in his elbow shortly after relieving starter Gio Gonzalez during the sixth inning of Monday night's 4-2 loss to the Giants.Mac Williamson hit Kelley's first pitch 464 feet for a two-run homer. Kelley was pulled a few pitches later after bouncing a slider well in front of the plate.Kelley said after the game that he didn't think it was anything serious, but Martinez said the Nationals were being cautious."He's had two surgeries so we want to make sure we don't do any more damage and just give him a little breather," Martinez said. The Nationals also optioned infielder/outfielder Matt Reynolds to Triple-A Syracuse and called up outfielder Rafael Bautista and infielder Adrian Sanchez.
Sat Apr 29 201714:41Nationals CF Eaton (knee) goes on DL
The Washington Nationals placed center fielder Adam Eaton on the 10-day disabled list because of a left knee strain after he was carried off the field on Friday night, the team announced Saturday.Eaton, who was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam, sustained the injury in the ninth inning of a 7-5 loss to the New York Mets on a play at first base. The 28-year-old Eaton was hurt after beating out an infield single, when he stepped awkwardly on the bag and collapsed to the ground, grabbing at his left leg. Eaton was unable to put any weight on his leg and had to be carried off the field by team trainers."We're hopeful it's not as serious as it looked," manager Dusty Baker said Saturday.Baker said he was not sure if the injury was to Eaton's knee or ankle."I don't know, could be one or both," Baker said. "We'll find out when we get the MRI."Acquired in an offseason trade with the Chicago White Sox, Eaton went 2-for-5 Friday as Washington's leadoff hitter to boost his batting average to .297. He has two home runs and 13 RBIs in 23 games. The Nationals called up outfielder Rafael Bautista from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Eaton's roster spot. Bautista, 24, was batting .291 with a .325 on-base percentage in 19 games for Syracuse this season.
