Montas held the Tigers to one run on two hits in four innings Sunday, and he struck out seven in the White Sox's regular season finale.

The Tigers pounced on Montas for a run in the first inning, but he settled down after and let the K's roll. The White Sox have remained noncommittal as to whether Montas belongs in the rotation or bullpen long-term, but Sunday's showing showed some promise for the former option.

Montas is listed as the probable starter for Sunday's game against the Tigers, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Rather than turn to Jeff Samardzija for the season finale, the White Sox have decided to give Montas another look in a starting role to close the year. The 22-year-old was knocked around for six runs in three innings against the Tigers last week in his first career start, but Montas will look to achieve better results this time around with his fastball-slider combination. Nothing's definite, but it would make sense if the White Sox sent Montas back to the minors to begin 2016 to work on a third offering.

Montas (0-1) had a rough afternoon, allowing six earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three over three innings in a 7-4 loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.

After recording impressive performances out of Chicago's bullpen, Montas' first major league start didn't go as planned. The rookie gave up a two-run homer to Victor Martinez in the first inning and was unable to settle into a groove after; allowing four runs to score in his third and final inning. Given the 22-year-old's shaky performance Wednesday, it's unclear if Montas will receive another start this season.

Montas is listed as the probable starter for Wednesday's game against the Tigers.

Lengthy outings from Jeff Samardzija and Erik Johnson during Monday's doubleheader spared the bullpen, and Montas will reap the benefits, as he will be afforded his first career start at the major league level. Using a high-90s fastball and a slider, Montas has fanned 10 while allowing just one run in eight innings with the big club since his September callup, though he hasn't thrown more than 65 pitches in an appearance and may face a strict pitch count Wednesday.

Montas may make a start before the end of the season, but it does not appear as though he will join the regular rotation, CSN Chicago reports.

Fellow minor league star Erik Johnson will join a modified six-man rotation for the White Sox, but it does not appear as though the club has similar plans for Montas. Montas pitched a shutout inning in in relief his MLB debut on Sept. 2, and he should make a few more relief appearances in the season's final weeks. Strong showings should put him in consideration for a 2016 rotation spot.

Montas threw a scoreless inning Wednesday against the Twins in his MLB debut.

Montas had been a starter for much of the season at Double-A Birmingham, but he made his debut Wednesday as a one-inning reliever. It is not clear if he will make a start in the season's final month, but he should be in the mix for a rotation spot come spring 2016.

Montas was recalled from Double-A Birmingham on Tuesday, Phil Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Added to the 40-man roster last November, Montas earned his September promotion by turning in a 2.97 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 108:48 K:BB in 23 starts for Birmingham this season. He did take a significant step back with his control, and it's uncertain if the White Sox have any intention of using him in the rotation over the final month, but Montas will look to carry his success over and make an early bid for a full-time rotation spot for next season.

Montas, 22, has a 2.59 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 87 strikeouts in 97.1 innings with Double-A Birmingham.

With the White Sox out of contention it will be interesting to see whether Montas gets a taste of the big leagues in 2015. He would certainly be ready to contribute out of the bullpen, or even the rotation, and since he is on the 40-man roster, that could be a viable scenario. Either way, Montas will really jump onto the fantasy scene in 2016, when he figures to join the rotation at some point early in the season.

The White Sox optioned Montas to Double-A Birmingham after Friday's doubleheader, according to MLB.com's transaction page.

He was added to the team's active roster to be an extra arm in the 'pen during the double feature against the Royals, but he did not make it into the game. However, we might see him and his triple-digit fastball back on the southside this season, either in the bullpen or rotation.

Montas was officially called up for Friday's doubleheader against the Royals.

Montas will come up from Double-A Birmingham to be the 26th man Friday, as the team revealed Thursday morning. The hard-throwing Montas will likely only remain with the White Sox for the day, but he figures to get another chance at the big league level later in the season.

Montas is less than a week removed from hitting triple-digits on the speed gun in the MLB Futures game, and it looks like he could make his MLB debut as the team's 26th man on Friday. His recall may only last the day, but he should receive a more extended look at some point this season.

Montas tossed a seven-inning no-hitter Tuesday for Double-A Birmingham.

He threw 77 pitches (47 strikes) in the first half of a doubleheader against Double-A Tennessee, striking out three and issuing three walks. The lineup he shut down features highly-rated prospects Kyle Schwarber, Dan Vogelbach, Billy McKinney and Albert Almora, which makes the feat all the more impressive. Montas is the second best White Sox prospect in the minor leagues and the team's top pitching prospect now that Carlos Rodon is entrenched in the big league rotation. While this was an excellent display of how dominant Montas can be, he probably won't play a big role for the big league club until 2016.

Montas has a 3.60 ERA and a 26:12 K:BB over 30 innings at Double-A Birmingham so far this season. He has improved his slider this season, South Side Sox reports.

Montas is a bit of a wildcard - he has great arm strength but needs to keep improving his secondary offerings, his command and his ability to repeat his somewhat unorthodox delivery. With continued progress we could see him get a cup of coffee in September, with an eye towards a full-time major league stretch in 2016.

Montas has jumped on the prospect radar after his performance in the Arizona Fall League and in spring training, but he still has some things to work on in the minor leagues if the White Sox plan to use him as a starting pitcher long term. It would not be surprising to see Montas get a late-season cup of coffee on the Southside if he has a strong run in the upper levels of the minors in the first half.

Pitching coach Don Cooper said Chris Sale's (foot) injury should allow for Montas to have more opportunities to pitch this spring, CSN Chicago reports.

Montas is still a long shot to crack the MLB roster out of spring training, but it sounds like he will at least have the chance to pitch against more advanced batters, as well as receive tips and advice from the big league staff. Montas has only made one appearance above High-A, but a strong spring could put him on the short list of in-season injury replacements in the minors.
