Fri Mar 1522:31Pirates Agree With Domingo German On Minor-League Deal
The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed with free-agent right-hander Domingo German on a $1.5 million minor-league deal on Friday. The 31-year-old Dominican hurler tossed a no-hitter against the lowly Oakland Athletics last year while with the New York Yankees, but that was easily the highlight of his season, as he finished with a 5-7 record, 4.56 ERA (4.65 FIP) and 1.08 WHIP with 34 walks and 114 strikeouts in 108 2/3 innings pitched over his 20 appearances (19 starts) in his sixth year in pinstripes. He'll have a better opportunity with the rebuilding Pirates, but German is unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset outside of NL-only leagues if he's with the big-league roster in 2024. In his six-year career, German holds a 4.41 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 2.8 walks per nine innings and 9.4 K's per nine innings in 522 1/3 frames.

Wed Feb 1400:32Pirates Researching Noah Syndergaard, Domingo German
The Pittsburgh Pirates are still looking to bolster their starting rotation for 2024 and are reportedly considering free agents Noah Syndergaard and Domingo German, per Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Jason Mackey. Mackey reported that the team is doing more investigation into German's history to determine how comfortable they would be in signing him, given his numerous off-field incidents last season. As for Syndergaard, the Pirates expressed interest in him earlier this year. The 31-year-old pitched 88 2/3 innings in 18 starts for the Dodgers and Guardians in 2023, going 2-6 with a 6.50 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 14.3% strikeout rate. Thor used to be a viable fantasy asset, but he has a lot to prove before becoming fantasy-relevant again, and joining the Pirates would not help his value.

Thu Jan 2514:16Domingo German Receiving Interest From Blue Jays, Orioles
Free-agent right-hander Domingo German is receiving interest on the open market from a pair of AL East clubs, namely the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles. The veteran hurler has a checkered past as he has served a domestic violence suspension, had multiple issues with "sticky stuff", and most recently sought, and received, treatment for alcohol abuse. The 31-year-old has spent his entire six-year MLB tenure with the New York Yankees but was not tendered a qualifying offer and became a free agent in November. Most recently, he worked to a 4.56 ERA across 20 outings (19 starts) with the Bombers in 2023 while he owns a 4.41 ERA across 112 big-league appearances (89 starts) while having issues with the home run ball by way of a career 1.62 HR/9 clip.

Wed Dec 20 202313:08Domingo German Has Met With Three Teams
The Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres and Baltimore Orioles have met with free-agent right-hander Domingo German, according to sources. The Padres and Orioles are his possible final destination. German became a free agent in early November when he refused an outright assignment to the minor leagues from the New York Yankees. The 31-year-old threw the 24th perfect game in MLB history against the Oakland Athletics last season but then later left the Yankees to enter alcohol abuse treatment. German had an uneven 2023 season by going 5-7 with a 4.56 ERA in 19 starts and one relief outing, and he's gone 31-28 with a 4.41 ERA in 89 starts and 23 relief appearances over six big-league seasons. German was suspended 10 games in May for using a sticky substance and was suspended 81 games in 2019 and 2020 for violating the league's domestic-violence policy.

Thu Nov 2 202319:37Domingo German Outrighted By Yankees
New York Yankees pitcher Domingo German was outrighted off the 40-man roster on Thursday. One of six players to be outrighted by the club, German can either be claimed by a rival team or elect free agency. It was a tumultuous season for the right-hander in 2023 as German worked to a 4.56 ERA and solid 18% K-BB% across 20 appearances (19 starts) before going on the restricted list in August after voluntarily submitting to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse. He also threw a perfect game on June 28 in Oakland, striking out nine A's hitters in the process. For his career, the 31-year-old owns a 4.41 ERA across 522 1/3 innings of work with 89 of his 112 appearances coming as starts.

Wed Aug 2 202318:35Domingo German Placed On Restricted List
New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German has been placed on the restricted list on Wednesday. The team announced that German has agreed to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse. The 30-year-old will be away from the organization for an unknown period of time. There's a good chance that German doesn't pitch again this season while he focuses on his own well being. The right-hander holds a 4.56 ERA and 9.44 K/9 in 108 2/3 innings (19 starts) this season.

Tue Aug 1 202300:13Domingo German Tosses Five Scoreless Innings Out Of Bullpen
New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German (arm) pitched five scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Rays. German was initially scratched from starting the game due to discomfort in his right armpit. However, he came into the game in the fifth inning and finished it out, allowing two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. The 30-year-old has been inconsistent this season and now has a 4.56 ERA and 9.44 K/9 in 108 2/3 innings. Assuming he makes his next appearance as a starter, he would line up for a tough matchup against the Astros. Fantasy managers may want to consider avoiding him in that start if he were to start.

Mon Jul 31 202317:00Domingo German Scratched With Injury
New York Yankees right-hander Domingo German (arm) felt discomfort in his right armpit on Sunday and was unable to play catch, forcing the team to scratch him from his start on Monday against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Manager Aaron Boone said that German will see a doctor soon. "We don't think it's an injured-list situation," Boone said. Jhony Brito is now expected to start for the Yankees on Monday. It remains to be seen if the 30-year-old German will be available to make his next scheduled start on Saturday against the Houston Astros, but if he does, he'll be a pretty risky fantasy play. Since throwing a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics on June 28, German has struggled, allowing 16 runs (14 earned) on 21 hits (five homers) while walking seven and striking out 32 in 22 1/3 innings pitched over four starts. He's allowed 11 earned runs in his last two outings against the Angels and Mets.

Thu Jun 29 202300:27Domingo German Makes History Wednesday Night
New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German accomplished what only 23 other pitchers have ever done in the history of the game on Wednesday night when he tossed a perfect game in the 11-0 win over the Oakland Athletics. In doing so, he struck out nine of the 27 batters he faced. What a turnaround it was after the 30-year-old right-hander allowed 17 runs (15 earned) in his last two starts over 5 1/3 innings against the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners. The amazing effort lowered his ERA on the year to 4.54 through 15 starts this year. German was the first pitcher in MLB to throw a perfect game since former Mariners ace Felix Hernandez did it in August of 2012. He'll face a tough matchup against the Baltimore Orioles in his next outing.

Mon May 29 202309:34Domingo German Activated From Restricted List
New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German has been activated from the restricted list after serving his suspension. The right-hander was suspended for an illegal foreign substance during a start against the Toronto Blue Jays on May 18. He'll take the ball against the Seattle Mariners on Monday. German holds a 3.75 ERA with 49/15 K/BB ratio across 48 innings in nine starts this season. Fantasy managers who have German rostered can safely get him back into their lineups.

Wed May 17 202318:39Domingo German Receives 10-Game Suspension
New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German has received a 10-game suspension for the use of an illegal foreign substance. The right-hander was ejected from Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The umpires felt German was using sticky stuff, so he was ejected from the contest. German will not appeal the suspension and he has also been fined an undisclosed amount. He becomes the second pitcher this season to be suspended for illegal foreign substance. Fantasy managers will need to find another option for at least two starts while German is suspended.

Tue May 16 202321:23Domingo German Ejected After Sticky-Stuff Suspicions
New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German was ejected from Tuesday's start against the Toronto Blue Jays before the beginning of the fourth inning after the umpires felt the righty was using sticky stuff. According to Greg Joyce of the New York Post, the league will hand down an automatic 10-game ban to the 30-year-old. Before German's ejection, he was cruising, allowing no baserunners while striking out two. Fantasy owners in most formats will miss his two wins, 3.75 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and 49 punchouts over 48 innings for over a week when he begins his suspension. It's unclear who will take his spot in the rotation, so stay tuned.

Tue May 2 202300:19Domingo German Takes Tough No-Decision Monday
New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German turned in a gem Monday but unfortunately couldn't come away with the win in Monday's 3-2 loss to the Guardians. German pitched 8 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with six strikeouts. Closer Clay Holmes came in to blow the save, putting a damper on a great performance. The 30-year-old has had some good starts and some bad ones so far but is now 2-2 with a 4.46 ERA and 10.22 K/9 rate. At this point, fantasy managers may not feel totally comfortable starting him in all matchups, including his next one at the Rays. However, he has shown enough positive signs to keep him around.

Sat Apr 15 202321:44Domingo German Strikes Out 11 In Saturday Win
New York Yankees right-hander Domingo German allowed one run on three hits over 6 1/3 innings in a 6-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. German struck out 11 batters and walked none while earning the win. The veteran right-hander was on top of his game on Saturday after lasting just three innings in his previous start. German notched an impressive 18 swinging strikes and racked up a 42% CSW in the start. He now has a 1-1 record, 3.86 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 19 strikeouts over 14 innings of work. His next start is scheduled for Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays. He's worth a look in deeper leagues if he's out there on waivers.

Tue Apr 11 202314:15Domingo German Lasts Just Three Innings Monday
New York Yankees right-hander Domingo German struggled with command during Monday's contest against the Cleveland Guardians, as he walked five batters in just three innings. He worked around the walks as best he could, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out no one, and the Yankees ultimately lost 3-2. German has made two starts thus far in 2023, and his numbers are lacking, as he owns a 5.87 ERA and 22.9% strikeout rate with a bloated 14.3% walk rate and 1.43 WHIP. The 30-year-old has shown signs in the past that he deserves a rotation spot and pitched to a 3.61 ERA over 14 starts last season. He might lose his starting role once Carlos Rodon (forearm) returns, even if he picks it up a bit, but fantasy managers may want to let him loose before that.

Thu Mar 9 202312:51Clarke Schmidt, Domingo German Likely To Start In Rotation
With the injuries to New York Yankees starting pitchers Carlos Rodon (forearm) and Frankie Montas (shoulder), it's reasonable to assume that both Clarke Schmidt and Domingo German will start the 2023 season in the starting rotation. General manager Brian Cashman mentioned Deivi Garcia among those who could provide depth. Schmidt is the more attractive option for fantasy managers after he had a 3.12 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings last year, mostly in relief. Between the big leagues and minors, Schmidt had 102 K's in 90 2/3 frames, so the strikeout upside is there. German appeared in only 15 games (14 starts) for the Yanks last year due to a shoulder injury, and he had just three quality starts while showing another drop in velocity.

Fri Jul 22 202200:48Domingo German Stumbles In Season Debut
New York Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German made his 2022 debut on Thursday, but it wasn't a welcome one as he took the loss in a 7-5 defeat at the hand of the Astros. The 29-year-old righty lasted just three innings while giving up five runs on six hits and a walk while striking out a pair, throwing 58 pitches in the contest. Yordan Alvarez and Alex Bregman greeted him with back-to-back shots in the first inning before they would each cash in more runners the following frame during a three-run rally. Better days will surely be ahead for German who will set his sights on a road matchup with the Mets next week.

Thu Jul 21 202211:26Domingo German Starting Game 2 Thursday
New York Yankees right-hander Domingo German (shoulder) has been activated from the 60-day injured list and will start Game 2 on Thursday against the Houston Astros. Left-hander Jordan Montgomery will toe the rubber in Game 1 to kick off the second half of the season. German will be making his 2022 season debut after dealing with shoulder issues since mid-March. The 29-year-old Dominican was excellent in five minor league rehab starts for Single-A Tampa, Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, allowing one earned run on nine hits while striking out 11 and walking just one in 20 1/3 innings. German should remain in the rotation until Luis Severino (lat) is able to return, but he'll be an extremely risky fantasy streamer on Thursday in his debut against the first-place Astros.

Wed Jul 20 202209:11Domingo German Expected To Be Activated Thursday
New York Yankees right-hander Domingo German (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list on Thursday, right before the team begins the second half of its season. However, it's not clear yet what type of role German will have with the team. Yankees manager Aaron Boone recently stated that German will either join the rotation or work in long relief. With Luis Severino (lat) recently landing on the injured list, there's an opening in the rotation and German seems like a likely candidate to fill the spot. German has yet to pitch in the majors this year as he's been sidelined due to right shoulder impingement syndrome. Last year, he made 22 appearances (18 starts) and went 4-5 with a 4.58 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. He's not a bad stash candidate if you need rotation help in an AL-only league or a deep league.

Sat Jul 16 202208:36Domingo German Throws Six Scoreless Frames At Triple-A
New York Yankees right-hander Domingo German (shoulder) had a dominant outing with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday. He threw six innings and allowed three hits, one walk and no runs while striking out one. German has been on the 60-day injured list all year due to right shoulder impingement syndrome. He has now made five rehab appearances this year and he's allowed just one earned run over 20.1 innings. Friday's outing was likely his final tuneup. He should be back with the Yankees after the All-Star break and he could take the rotation spot of Luis Severino (shoulder), who landed on the injured list on Thursday. German is far from a must-add player in fantasy, but if you're looking for rotation help and he officially gets added to the rotation, he's someone worth considering.
