OF Yasmany Tomas (core muscle) will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday. The surgery will conclude a frustrating process for Tomas, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list June 6 (retroactive to June 3) with what was originally diagnosed as right groin tendinitis. He played in three rehab games for the rookie-level Arizona League Diamondbacks in late June before aggravating the injury, which was then diagnosed as a right groin strain. He was shifted to the 60-day disabled list July 27 but appeared to be trending towards another rehab stint before reporting more problems while trying to run the bases last week. Further testing revealed he was dealing with a core muscle injury. Tomas is expected to be ready for spring training. He batted .241 with eight homers and 32 RBIs in 47 games this season.

OF Yasmany Tomas (.241, 8 HR, 32 RBIs) has missed half of the season with a troublesome groin injury that won't seem to heal. He was pulled out of a rehabilitation assignment last month when he aggravated the injury. Manager Torey Lovullo said Tomas is having trouble with"the pounding of running" and making turns. Tomas took some at-bats during LHP Robbie Ray's simulated game Saturday and may be closer to returning - though, during his absence, the Diamondbacks acquired RF J.D. Martinez. "He took some good swings off him and base ran afterward," Lovullo said. "We want to get him in a game as soon as possible. When it's trending toward that, I don't exactly know now."

OF Yasmany Tomas (right groin tendinitis) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment next week, manager Torey Lovullo said Friday. Lovullo didn't offer a specific day for Tomas' first rehab game, but he said he's "optimistic" that Tomas will play for the Diamondbacks again this season. "He's progressing well," Lovullo said. "Unfortunately, the first time we tried to being him back he reinjured that area, and we just want to make sure he wouldn't have any setbacks. We miss Yasmany. He's a very, very good player. In 47 games for Arizona this season, Tomas hit.241 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs. "He's done all sorts of baseball activity," Lovullo said. "He's initiated a running program and he's been feeling very good."

LF Yasmany Tomas (groin) began his rehab assignment in the rookie Arizona League on Tuesday and appears likely to need a series of games before being activated. Tomas has been out since June 3, and he seems unlikely to return before the All-Star break. Hs is on a slower track than OF A.J. Pollock, who has been out since May 15. "We have to heat him back up," Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen said. "We have to get him back in games. Like A.J. (Pollock), he hasn't played in awhile."
