Hernandez was a late addition to the Diamondbacks' lineup Wednesday.

Welington Castillo was removed from the lineup for precautionary measures with tightness in his left hamstring. If Castillo will miss any time from the injury, Hernandez will likely see more appearances behind the plate.

Hernandez will be activated for Saturday's game against the Rockies, although he won't be in the starting lineup, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

The Diamondbacks have a decision to make in the near future as they currently have three active catchers at the major league level, including Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Welington Castillo. With that being said, Saltalamacchia is the favorite to receive a demotion, with Castillo likely to start moving forward while Hernandez serves as the primary backup.

Manager Chip Hale indicated Friday that Hernandez (wrist) will rejoin the Diamondbacks when healthy, JAck Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona reports.

Hernandez would have to be offered back to the Rays if he doesn't remain on the Diamondbacks, but it appears the club wants to hold onto him. The likely scenario would then involve a demotion for either Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Welington Castillo, though Saltalamacchia seems the more likely candidate.

Hernandez (wrist) is currently on a rehab assignment with Low-A Kane County, Zach Buchanan of the Arizona Republic reports.

Hernandez isn't expected to rejoin the Diamondbacks until July, but it appears he's steadily progressing. The Rule 5 pick needs to hit certain benchmarks in terms of major league service time for the club to avoid having to send him back to the Rays, but the team's playoff outlook, he'll probably reach the necessary totals.

Hernandez has an outside chance to return and compete for a backup catcher role, but the position just got more crowded following Wednesday's acquisition of Welington Castillo. Hernandez currently resides on the 60-day disabled list, as his recovery from a broken wrist hasn't exactly gone as planned. The 21-year-old backstop has yet to record a plate appearance in the majors.

The transaction is merely procedural, as Hernandez is already coming up on the 60-day mark and doesn't appear to be all that close to a return. Once healthy, he could be in the mix for a big-league roster spot, given the Diamondbacks' weakness at catcher.

Hernandez (wrist) popped scar tissue loose in his left hand in extended spring training Monday and will have a follow-up MRI on Friday, Fox Sports Arizona's Jack Magruder reports.

It sounds like this could be a significant setback for Hernandez in his attempt to recover from a broken wrist. The Diamondbacks have perhaps the weakest group of catchers in baseball, so if Hernandez can get healthy he could force his way into the mix at the big league level. We should know more about his status later in the week.
