CF Boog Powell (bruised left kneecap) was shut down Tuesday for the rest of the season. Powell hasn't appeared in a game since Sept. 16 at Philadelphia when he was injured on a collision with an outfield fence. The A's acquired Powell from Seattle on Aug. 6 in a trade for 1B Yonder Alonso. The rookie hit .282 with five doubles, three home runs and 12 RBIs in 52 games. "He's made a nice showing for himself," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "He came up and was productive right away. Certainly played center as well as anybody we had here defensively. He's got an intensity to his game that was noticeable. And for a team that struggled defensively really helped us out on that end. So he made a good showing. Even though he'd like to still be playing right now, I think he's done enough to show that he could be a nice piece for us next season."

CF Boog Powell had an MRI on Friday morning that he said showed a bone bruise but no ligament damage in his left knee. "That's the good thing, that I won' t need rehab, I won't miss an extended amount of time," Powell said. "It's pretty much for me right now, how much [pain] I can tolerate. So I hit in the cage, felt good. Tomorrow, hopefully hit BP and go from there." Powell was hurt on Sept. 16 against Philadelphia at Citizens Bank Park while trying to climb the center field wall to make a catch on a home run. "I just jumped up with my right leg and tried to climb it and stick my foot up with my left and my knee just went straight into the pole. They said the padding was pushed inside a little bit. It just rammed the pole. It hurts."

CF Boog Powell didn't start Saturday, but Athletics manager Bob Melvin said it wasn't due to a loss in confidence in the rookie. "It's more about trying to get Pinder into the lineup today," Melvin said. "It doesn't mean we're not going to play Powell anymore. We'll continue to play him in center. It's going to be a bit of jigsaw puzzle, especially when we get home, to get everybody some at-bats." Powell entered Saturday's game in the ninth as a defensive replacement. In 18 games since being traded to Oakland on Aug. 6, Powell has hit .292 with a homer in 48 at-bats.

Powell had been slated to play Friday, but he was a late scratch because of an upper respiratory infection and an asthma attack that sent him to the emergency room at a local hospital. "Yesterday during BP I honestly couldn't breathe," Powell said before Saturday's game. "I was breathing like 50 percent. I was sweating. I went to the ER and had them take a look at me. They gave me a breathing treatment and I started coughing up all the stuff that was in me. Woke up this morning and felt better and then I came here at 12 and ran outside, ran as much as I would in any game. And I could tolerate it." Powell said he hasn't had such a severe asthma attack in 10 years, but he always has his inhaler with him "just in case." The A's reacquired Powell on Aug. 6 from Seattle in a trade for 1B Yonder Alonso. Powell was drafted by the A's in the 20th round in 2012. Powell started in center field and
