Sat Feb 1713:45Sean Manaea Refining His Pitch Arsenal In Spring Training
New York Mets starting pitcher Sean Manaea has been refining his pitch arsenal during spring training. The 32-year-old lefty spent the 2021 and 2022 off-seasons at Driveline Baseball in Kent, WA to work on his velocity and pitch mix. The hard work during the offseason paid off as he put together a solid 4.44 ERA (3.90 FIP), 1.241 WHIP, and 128:42 K/BB ratio over 117 2/3 innings (37 appearances, 10 starts) with the San Francisco Giants. His sweeper and changeup were two of his best pitches last season and he's added a cutter to his arsenal as well. The Mets plan to have Manaea start the year in their rotation so their plan during spring training is to optimize and refine his pitches to give him a solid plan on how to deploy them all against batters. Given his recent resurgence, Manaea is worth a dart throw late in fantasy drafts this spring.

Sat Jan 1312:20Sean Manaea Officially Signs With The Mets
New York Mets left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea has officially signed a two-year, $28 million contract with the team. This deal was announced last week but now the team has made it official. Manaea was a free agent this offseason and coming off a 4.44 ERA (3.90 FIP), 1.241 WHIP, and 128:42 K/BB over 117 2/3 innings (37 appearances, 10 starts) with the San Francisco Giants. The deal also includes an opt-out after the 2024 season. This has been viewed as a solid move by the Mets as the veteran left-hander can work out of the bullpen and be used as a spot starter as well.

Sun Jan 712:17Sean Manaea Signs Two-Year Deal With The Mets
Free-agent left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea has signed a two-year, $28 million contract with the New York Mets. The deal includes an opt-out after the 2024 season as well. The 31-year-old lefty was solid with the San Francisco Giants last season, finishing with a 4.44 ERA (3.90 FIP), 1.241 WHIP, and 128:42 K/BB over 117 2/3 innings (37 appearances, 10 starts). The Mets will likely use him out of the bullpen and in spot-starting/opener situations. This is a pretty low-risk deal with New York that could end up paying off after Manaea showed significant improvement with his velocity after a down year in 2022 with the Padres.

Sun Nov 5 202320:16Sean Manaea Opts Out Of Contract
San Francisco Giants pitcher Sean Manaea has decided to opt out of his $12.5 million deal with the team for the upcoming 2024 season. The left-hander would rather test his value on the open market. The 31-year-old was used in a swingman role for the Giants this past season. He posted a 4.44 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and a 128/42 K/BB ratio across 117 2/3 innings in his 37 appearances (10 starts) with the Giants. It's possible that Manaea declined because he wants to be a full-time starter elsewhere. Regardless, he should be able to land a multi-year deal in free agency.

Fri Sep 15 202312:20Sean Manaea To Make Another Start Sunday
San Francisco Giants left-hander Sean Manaea is scheduled to make another start for the team this Sunday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Manaea made his first start since May this past Tuesday against the Cleveland Guardians and allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits while walking two and striking out five in 5 2/3 innings of work for a loss. The 31-year-old could be settling into a starting-rotation spot or at least a bulk-relief role down the stretch for the Gigantes. The matchup against the Rockies this weekend is nice, but the fact that it's at Coors Field shouldn't have fantasy managers interested in the veteran southpaw as a streaming option. Overall in 2023, Manaea is 5-6 with a 4.80 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, one save and 115 K's in 99 1/3 innings over 34 appearances (seven starts).

Mon Sep 11 202314:04Sean Manaea To Start On Tuesday
San Francisco Giants left-hander Sean Manaea will serve as the starter for a matchup on Tuesday against the Cleveland Guardians. It will be Manaea's seventh start of the year but just his first since May 10. Since then, the 31-year-old southpaw has been serving as a long man out of the bullpen, so he's not going to be a favorable fantasy play despite the above-average matchup. Manaea hasn't been very effective in his first year in the Bay Area, going 5-5 with a 5.00 ERA (4.08 FIP), 1.32 WHIP, one save, 40 walks and 110 strikeouts in 93 1/3 innings over 33 appearances (six starts) in 2023. Jakob Junis or Alex Wood could cover the bulk of the innings on Tuesday if Manaea doesn't make it very far in his start.

Mon Apr 3 202318:20Sean Manaea Comes Out Of Bullpen Monday
The San Francisco Giants used lefty Sean Manaea in relief during Monday's 12-3 blowout win over the Chicago White Sox. He came into the game in the seventh for his season debut and allowed three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one over two innings of work. The Giants signed Manaea in the offseason to a one-year deal, hoping he would bounce back after producing a 4.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 156 strikeouts across 158 innings with the San Diego Padres in 2022. It's unclear if the former Oakland Athletic will be part of a six-man rotation later in the season or if he'll remain in a long relief role until a spot opens up. Either way, Manaea can be dropped without a second thought in most formats unless there's room on the bench to stash him.

Mon Dec 12 202214:26Sean Manaea Signing With Giants
According to a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman on Sunday, free-agent starting pitcher Sean Manaea is reportedly joining the San Francisco Giants. Heyman tweeted the following on Sunday: "Sean Manaea to Giants. $25M, 2 years. Opt out." The veteran made 30 appearances for the San Diego Padres last season, 28 of which were starts. He logged 158 innings for manager Bob Melvin's club, pitching to a 4.96 ERA, a 4.53 FIP, 156 strikeouts and 50 walks. He'll join a Giants rotation that features the likes of Logan Webb, Alex Cobb, Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafaniand Jakob Junis.

Sun Oct 23 202201:00Sean Manaea Gives Up Five Runs
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Sean Manaea came on in relief in Saturday night's NLCS Game 4, his first appearance of this postseason, and he proceeded to allow five runs on four hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out two batters and took the loss. Manaea does not appear likely to factor into Game 5. If this is his last appearance of the year, it would be a disappointing but fitting end to his year after he recorded a career-worst 4.96 ERA in 158 innings.

Sun Sep 4 202200:33Sean Manaea Allows Eight Runs Versus Dodgers
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Sean Manaea struggled on Saturday night as his club was beaten by the Dodgers 12-1. His night couldn't have started much worse after Mookie Betts led off the first with a triple and then Trea Turner followed that up with a two-run shot before he could even record an out. Manaea would go on to allow two more homers in the ball game as he finished the night giving up eight runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 IP. The lefty walked one and struck out four as he now sits with a 140/46 K/BB and an underachieving 5.27 ERA and 1.36 WHIP through 138 1/3 IP. He'll get a rematch versus the Dodgers next weekend where managers may want to keep him benched since he's struggled to a 9.21 ERA over his last six starts.

Mon Aug 22 202200:19Sean Manaea Picks Up Seventh Win
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Sean Manaea earned his seventh win of the season Sunday, throwing seven strong innings against the Washington Nationals. He allowed one run on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts. This is Manaea's first quality start in four August trips to the mound. Fantasy managers will be glad for the good outing after the left-hander has underwhelmed this year to the tune of a 4.64 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with 132 strikeouts in 130 innings. He'll look to keep this up in his next outing, expected to come next week against the Kansas City Royals.

Mon Jul 25 202223:53Sean Manaea Roughed Up Monday
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Sean Manaea couldn't escape the fourth inning Monday, as he allowed nine runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings. Manaea struck out four batters and took his fifth loss of the season against five wins, as the Padres fell to the Detroit Tigers 12-4. Manaea had recorded a quality start in seven of his previous nine starts, but this performance lifts his season ERA and WHIP to a somewhat pedestrian 4.33 and 1.28 with 104 strikeouts in 104 innings this season. He remains a solid fantasy starter despite this bump in the road.

Fri Jun 3 202200:15Sean Manaea Strikes Out Eight In No-Decision
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Sean Manaea hurled six strong innings on Thursday as his club fell to the Brewers 5-4. He struck out eight batters on the evening while allowing one run on five hits and two walks, throwing 67 of his 103 pitches for strikes. The left-hander departed the game with a 3-1 lead, but the Brew Crew stormed back with a four-run ninth to walk it off and give Manaea the no-decision to keep his record at 2-3. The former A's ace has pitched to expectations with his new club so far with a 3.77 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 68 strikeouts through 62 IP as he'll look to even up his record in a home matchup versus the Mets next week.

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Sean Manaea turned in another strong outing Saturday against the Atlanta Braves, throwing seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts. He took a no-decision in the extra-inning win. Manaea has been excellent to start the year, with six quality starts in seven trips to the mound. He now has a 3.77 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 50 strikeouts in 43 innings, and he deserves more than the two victories he's been credited with thus far.

Sat Apr 9 202208:58Sean Manaea No-Hits D-Backs Over Seven Frames
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Sean Manaea had a fantastic debut outing with the team on Friday. Facing the Arizona Diamondbacks, he went seven innings and allowed one walk, no hits and no runs while striking out seven. It was a nearly flawless outing for the 30-year-old, who was acquired in a trade with the Oakland Athletics less than a week ago. Manaea had a 3.91 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP over 32 starts with the A's last year. He made some major strides in the strikeout department last season, increasing his strikeout rate from 20.3% in 2020 to 25.7% last year. His next start is lined up for next Wednesday on the road against the San Francisco Giants.

Sun Apr 3 202211:09Padres Acquire Sean Manaea From A's
The San Diego Padres acquired starting pitcher Sean Manaea and relief pitcher Aaron Holiday from the Oakland Athletics on Sunday in exchange for minor league infielder Euribiel Angeles and right-hander Adrian Martinez, according to a source. Manaea had been involved in offseason trade rumors all spring, and he'll finally be dealt just before Opening Day to a Padres rotation that is already pretty stacked with Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell and Mike Clevinger. The 30-year-old left-hander will become slightly more attractive while joining a better club after he posted a 3.91 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and a 194:41 K:BB over 179 1/3 innings in 2021. Chris Paddack, who has been involved in trade talks with the New York Mets, could be on his way out of San Diego.

Wed Mar 30 202210:18Sean Manaea Dominates Dodgers Tuesday
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Sean Manaea was downright nasty in his Cactus League outing on Tuesday against a Los Angeles Dodgers lineup filled with most of their starters. The left-hander retired nine straight hitters at one point and struck out seven while allowing one run on two hits in 5 2/3 innings. All seven of Manaea's K's were swinging, and his slider was looking nasty. "My sliders over the past two games have just gotten better and better," Manaea said. The 30-year-old has been a popular trade target by several teams this offseason, but the A's may just decide to keep him after his performance on Tuesday. He had a 3.91 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and a career-high 194 strikeouts in 179 1/3 innings last year and is a solid mid-round selection for fantasy managers.

Wed Mar 23 202223:47A's May Hold Onto Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea
Interested teams are getting the impression that the Oakland Athletics may hold onto starting pitchers Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea. Some teams believe they are open to dealing Manaea, but it's quite possible now that they keep both pitchers, at least to begin the 2022 season. The A's have already traded Chris Bassitt, Matt Olson and Matt Chapman, but they may decide to hang onto Manaea and Montas for a bit longer. Montas is probably the more attractive real-life and fantasy arm because of his strikeout upside, but Manaea is more likely to be traded after he signed a one-year, $9.75 million deal to avoid salary arbitration on Tuesday. The left-hander had a solid 3.91 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and a 194:42 K:BB in 179 1/3 innings in 2021.
