Tue Feb 22 202215:22Dwight Smith Jr. Signs With White Sox
The Chicago White Sox have signed free-agent outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. to a minor league deal. Smith was a first-round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays back in 2011, and he made his major league debut in 2017 with Toronto. He looked good in his first two big-league seasons, prompting the Baltimore Orioles to trade for him. In his two seasons with Baltimore in 2019 and 2020, Smith hit a combined .238/.298/.405 with 15 home runs, 59 RBI, six steals and 55 runs scored in 122 games (464 plate appearances). In 147 plate appearances with the Cincinnati Reds Triple-A affiliate in 2021, Smith slashed just .221/.327/.284. It's unlikely that the White Sox see him as a primary candidate for their right field mix this season, and he'll simply be trying to win a spot on the Opening Day roster if we have a spring training in 2022.

Wed Jun 3 201511:44Smith hitting .283 with three home runs and three steals in 203 ...
Smith is hitting .283 with three home runs and three steals in 203 plate appearances with Double-A New Hampshire.
His batting average and BABIP almost exactly mirror what he did at High-A Dunedin in 2014 despite playing against tougher competition and in a slightly tougher hitting environment. However, he is behind the pace of matching his power (12 homers) and speed (15 steals) from a year ago. The one thing that should make Smith intriguing in dynasty leagues is that he is excellent at making contact while still walking at a sufficient rate. The worst K-rate he has posted in the minors was 17.1 percent at Low-A in 2013 and his walk rates have steadily been in the 8.5-11 percent range. This approach should allow him to stick at the big leagues and in time his tools should start to show themselves in games with more regularity.
