Fri Dec 23 202213:42Royals Sign Mike Mayers To Minor-League Deal
The Kansas City Royals signed free-agent right-hander Mike Mayers to a minor-league deal on Thursday. Mayers became a free agent this offseason after he rejected an outright assignment from the Los Angeles Angels. The 31-year-old reliever posted a 5.68 ERA (6.37 FIP), a 1.38 WHIP and 45 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings over 24 appearances (three starts) for the Halos in 2022. There's a good chance he'll see action in the big leagues for the Royals in 2023, and he could even make the Opening Day roster out of spring training. Mayer has a career 5.10 ERA (4.63 FIP), five saves, a 1.40 WHIP and a 24 percent strikeout rate in 236 1/3 innings over 198 outings (six starts). He won't carry any fantasy value.

Tue Aug 23 202211:37Mike Mayers To Start On Wednesday
Los Angeles Angels right-hander Mike Mayers will get the start on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. It will be Mayers' first start of the season for the Angels after 18 relief appearances in which he's posted a 5.22 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 27 strikeouts and nine walks in 29 1/3 innings pitched. He's thrown 9 1/3 innings in his last two outings in long relief, so he's stretched out enough to make a spot start this week. Mayers surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits (four home runs) while walking one and striking out nine in those last two outings, so fantasy managers should be looking elsewhere on Wednesday.

Sat Aug 6 202213:33Mike Mayers Has Contract Purchased
Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Mike Mayers has had his contract selected from Triple-A Salt Lake and will join the team's 40-man roster. The 30-year-old righty was outrighted to the minors back in early June but has now made his way back to the majors. He posted a poor 5.40 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and 14:6 K/BB ratio over 16 2/3 innings (15 appearances) earlier this season. He'll add some depth to the Los Angeles bullpen but doesn't offer a whole lot of fantasy value.

Fri May 7 202101:14Altuve responds to jeers with homer, Astros beat Yankees 7-4
NEW YORK (AP) — José Altuve responded to jeering fans by marking his 31st birthday with a go-ahead, three-run homer off Chad Green in the eighth inning, and the Houston Astros beat the New York Yankees 7-4 on Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep. Booed throughout the series by fans getting to express their anger directly at the Astros since their cheating scandal en route to the 2017 World Series title was exposed, Altuve turned on a shoulder-high 96 mph 3-2 pitch and drove it over the left-field scoreboard for a 5-3 lead. Gleyber Torres made an incredible, daring dash for the Yankees, scoring from first base on an infield single, but New York’s five-game winning streak ended. Yordan Álvarez hit a pair of solo homers off Gerrit Cole, who turned a 3-2 lead over to Green (0-3) starting the eighth. OAKLAND, Calif. Laureano hit a one-hopper to Arraez for what again should have been the final out. Tue Apr 6 202102:42Stanton's 471-foot slam lifts Yankees over O's 7-0
NEW YORK (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton hit a grand slam over the visitors’ bullpen that landed in the left-bleachers 471 feet from home plate, helping New York hand Baltimore its first loss this season. New York was ahead 1-0 on Aaron Judge’s fourth-inning homer when starter Jorge López (0-1) walked the bases loaded in the fifth, and Shawn Armstrong forced in a run with a walk to slumping Aaron Hicks. Stanton sent a 92 mph fastball soaring for the longest home run of the young major league season and his eighth career slam. New York improved to 8-0 when Judge and Stanton homer in the same game, including three postseason wins. Fri Apr 2 202102:57Segura's hit in 10th lifts Phillies over Braves in opener
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jean Segura hit an RBI single with two outs in the 10th inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies over the Atlanta Braves 3-2 in their season opener Thursday. After Nate Jones (0-1) intentionally walked Did Gregorius, Segura hit a bouncer down the third-base line to score Bryce Harper, who began the inning as the automatic runner at second base and advanced to third on a grounder. In the top of the 10th, center fielder Roman Quinn made a perfect throw to the plate to retire Ozzie Albies, who was trying to score on Marcell Ozuna’s fly ball. Catcher J.T. Realmuto caught the ball and slid in front of the plate in one slick motion, successfully blocking Albies’ path. Phillies ace Aaron Nola was one strike away from tossing seven scoreless innings before pinch-hitter Pablo Sandoval ripped an 0-2 pitch into the second deck in right field to tie it at 2. The Phillies got 3 1/3 scoreless innings from four relievers, with Connor Brogdon (1-0) working the 10th. They had the worst... [More]
