Aside from three plate appearances with the Orioles in August, Phelps spent the entire 2014 season at Triple-A Norfolk, batting .259/.361/.388 with five homers and two steals in 99 games. Phelps had his contract purchased from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports.
With Manny Machado (knee) landing on the disabled list and J.J. Hardy day-to-day with an injury of his own, Phelps will help the Orioles replenish some depth on the left side of the infield. It remains to be seen how exactly the Orioles' starting infield will shake out while Machado and Hardy miss time, but if Wednesday's lineup is any indication of the team's plans, Phelps will likely be ticketed for utility duty off the bench. Ryan Flaherty received the start at shortstop Wednesday, while Chris Davis moved over to the hot corner from his usual first base post.
