Tue Jan 2314:05Alex Blandino Attempting Comeback As Pitcher
The Cincinnati Reds signed Alex Blandino to a minor-league deal in November. The 31-year-old hasn't played in the majors since 2021 and will be attempting a comeback as a pitcher this spring training, specifically as a knuckleballer. He hit .226 in 279 plate appearances over parts of three seasons with the Reds and suffered a torn ACL in July of 2018. In his three seasons with the Reds, he appeared at all four infield and both corner outfield spots. Blandino is expected to report to Double-A Chattanooga to begin the 2024 season. The former first-rounder (29th overall) in 2014 by the Reds pitched as a senior in college at Stanford and hit 90 mph with his fastball in a pitching appearance for the Reds in 2021. It's a cool story, but Blandino is unlikely to make a return to the big leagues as a pitcher as anything more than a mop-up option out of Cincy's bullpen.

Wed Jun 2 202102:33Yankees win on Frazier's homer with two outs in 11th
NEW YORK (AP) — Clint Frazier hit a game-ending, two-run homer with two outs in the 11th inning after making a game-saving catch in the eighth, and the slumping New York Yankees beat the rival Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 Tuesday night. The righty-hitting Frazier turned on a slider from right-hander Andrew Kittredge (5-1) and stood at the plate to admire the drive, capping a tight finish in which both teams came up short on potential rallies. One of those stalled efforts came in the eighth, when Frazier dove and needed every inch of his mitt to catch Joey Wendle’s soft-hit liner to strand two. New York ended a four-game slide and beat Tampa Bay in the Bronx for the second time in 11 tries since the start of last season. The AL East-leading Rays remained 4 1/2 games ahead of the Yankees with two games left in this four-game series. Tampa Bay had held New York to three or fewer runs in seven straight matchups and won nine straight against division foes. ORIOLES 7, TWINS 4 BALTIMORE (AP) — Cedric Mullins... [More]

Thu Apr 22 202100:20A's win 11th straight, beating Twins 13-12 in 10 innings
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics extended their winning streak to 11, rallying from a two-run deficit and beating the Twins 13-12 on Wednesday when Luis Arraez threw away Ramón Laureano’s grounder for Minnesota’s second error of the 10th inning. Nelson Cruz had two home runs and four RBIs for the Twins, and Byron Buxton hit a two-run homer against Lou Trivino for a 12-10 lead in the 10th. Alex Colomé (1-2) got the first two outs in the bottom half with the automatic runner on second, then walked Seth Brown and Elvis Andrus, loading the bases. Mark Canha hit what should have been a game-ending grounder to second baseman Travis Blankehorn, who entered as a pinch runner for Josh Donaldson in the 10th, but Blankenhorn allowed the ball to bounce off his glove for a run-scoring error. Laureano hit a one-hopper to Arraez for what again should have been the final out. Arraez, who had moved to third from second base to third for the 10th, sailed his throw over first baseman Willians... [More]

Wed Apr 14 202101:50Red Sox top Twins in snowy game delayed after Minn. shooting
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Rafael Devers homered for the fourth straight game and the streaking Boston Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2 on a snowy Tuesday in a series opener moved back following the fatal police shooting of a Black man in a nearby suburb. Hunter Renfroe hit a solo homer and Bobby Dalbec added a pair of RBI doubles as Boston won its seventh in a row after losing its first three games of the season. Monday’s game was postponed due to safety and sensitivity concerns in the Twin Cities after the police shooting a day earlier of Daunte Wright during a traffic stop. The Twins held a moment of silence for Wright prior to Tuesday’s game. Snow flurries fell for most of the game and it was 33 degrees for the first pitch. That made for the third-coldest start at Target Field, the record being 27 degrees on April 7, 2018. Adam Ottavino (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Matt Barnes pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of the season. Randy Dobnak (0-2) took the... [More]
Sun Apr 11 202118:35Dbacks' Weaver loses no-hit bid in 7th on broken-bat single
PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Luke Weaver's no-hit bid ended with one out in the seventh inning when Cincinnati's Eugenio Suárez snuck a broken-bat single up the middle. Weaver retired Nick Castellanos to start the seventh on a fly ball, then walked Joey Votto on four pitches. Suárez followed with the groundball single, which was perfectly placed between Arizona's shortstop and second baseman. The 27-year-old Weaver had a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings Sunday but hit Alex Blandino with a pitch with two outs in the sixth. The right-hander retired Tyler Naquin on a strikeout to end the inning. The Diamondbacks lead 7-0 in the seventh. Weaver is trying to bounce back from a tough 2020 season when he led the National League with nine losses and had a 6.58 ERA. ___ Follow David Brandt at https://twitter.com/davidbrandtAP ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Fri Mar 26 202114:34Reds release former NL batting champ Strange-Gordon
GOODYEAR, Arizona (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds on Friday released Dee Strange-Gordon, a non-roster invitee to spring training who auditioned at shortstop. Strange-Gordon, a 32-year-old former All-Star and NL batting champ, got a shot with Cincinnati after Freddy Galvis signed as a free agent with the Baltimore Orioles. But his chances were hurt by the team’s decision to move Eugenio Suarez from third base to shortstop, and also by good spring performances from versatile infielders Jonathan India and Alex Blandino. Strange-Gordon, who spent the last three, mostly injury-plagued seasons with Seattle, hit .281 in 12 spring training games with four RBIs and four stolen bases. He would have received a $1 million salary in the major leagues if added to the 40-man roster and the chance to earn $600,000 in performance bonuses for games played. Strange-Gordon won the league batting title in 2015 as the Marlins second baseman and was a two-time All Star. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports ___ Follow Mitch Stacy at http://twitter.com/mitchstacy
Mon Mar 1 202115:07Reds' Kyle Farmer making his case to start at shortstop
Kyle Farmer reported to spring camp early with pitchers and catchers but traded in his backup catcher's number (52) for an infielder's number (17), part of his campaign to become the Cincinnati Reds' regular shortstop. Farmer can play anywhere and hits nearly .300 against left-handed pitching, which has made him a valuable utilityman for the Reds the past two seasons. He let manager David Bell know last spring he wanted a chance to prove himself at shortstop, which is where he played for four years as a University of Georgia star. The opportunity is here for the 30-year-old Farmer, who may be the Reds' best option since they let Freddy Galvis leave to sign with the Baltimore Orioles and didn't splash into the free-agent pool for a replacement. Farmer started 10 games at shortstop last season and another in the playoffs. “Trust me, I was on Twitter every day seeing if they were going to sign a shortstop,” Farmer said earlier in the spring. In the opening spring exhibition game Sunday, Farmer... [More]
Wed Aug 19 202017:54Reds put Senzel on IL, reinstate Moustakas to face Royals
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds put outfielder Nick Senzel on the injured list and reinstated third baseman Mike Moustakas to face his former team before a doubleheader Wednesday against the Kansas City Royals. The Reds also chose infielder Robel Garcia as their 29th man for the doubleheader, which was caused by a postponement of the series opener Tuesday night. The Reds had two games postponed over the weekend because of a positive COVID-19 test and Major League Baseball wanted to provide them with an additional day for testing.“There will be increased testing for a small group of players that was determined to have had closer contact than the rest of us,” Reds president Dick Williams said. “They did contact tracing, watched video and they determined in their judgment that a small group of players would need some extra testing and possibly keep them off team flights a bit longer.”Williams added that those players — three in all — have been cleared to participate in games, but... Thu Sep 26 201917:32And this one belongs to Marty: Brennaman calls final game
CINCINNATI (AP) — And this one belongs to Marty Brennaman. Tears and all. With fans applauding his every mention, the Hall of Fame broadcaster called his final Cincinnati Reds game Thursday, ending a 46-year career that featured so many big stars and historic moments — Hank Aaron, the Big Red Machine, Pete Rose — and more than a few verbal tiffs with fans and players who weren't exactly endeared to his tell-it-like-it-is approach. He went out in style and emotion, choking back words and taking long pauses during his final sign-off after a 5-3 loss to the Brewers."And for those who are listening wherever they might be, just know how much you're loved ... (long pause) ... and how much you're appreciated," Brennaman said. "That's all I got."Lots of tears, right from the start.Brennaman popped into the press box to shake writers' hands before the game. He recounted a touching phone call from Joe Girardi as he drove to the ballpark."A tough day," Brennaman said. "I've cried three times already."The... [More]
