Fri Aug 27 202115:16Reds Claim Asdrubal Cabrera Off Waivers
The Cincinnati Reds claimed veteran infielder Asdrubal Cabrera off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. With Arizona well out of the playoff picture this year, they are effectively giving Cabrera a chance to play in the postseason later this season. The Reds are currently in the second wild-card spot in the National League. The 35-year-old put up a slash line of .244/.323/.392 with seven home runs, 40 RBI and 34 runs scored in 90 games for Arizona and will give Cincinnati some valuable infield depth down the stretch. Cabrera is also a switch-hitter, so he'll give the Reds some versatility as a late-inning pinch-hitter off the bench. His already low fantasy value will drop even more, though, with the move to a much more stacked Reds team.

Sun Aug 8 202115:35Asdrubal Cabrera Not Starting On Saturday
Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Asdrubal Cabrera isn't starting Sunday as the team gets set to take on the San Diego Padres and left-handed starter Blake Snell. Cabrera is batting .245 with a .339 on-base percentage, six home runs, and a stolen base in 271 plate appearances this season. Drew Ellis is starting at third base for Cabrera on Sunday and batting sixth. The 25-year-old has only logged 20 plate appearances for Arizona this season, picking up a pair of hits in the process. If you need a streaming option in a deeper league, you're probably better off looking elsewhere on Sunday.

Thu Jun 17 202102:08DeGrom pulled early, Mets bullpen finishes 6-3 win over Cubs
NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom was pulled from a second straight start with an arm injury, this time leaving after three perfect innings with right shoulder soreness, but the New York Mets bullpen stepped up to finish a three-hitter in a 6-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. One start after being pulled from a gem against San Diego with flexor tendinitis in his right arm, deGrom went directly down the clubhouse tunnel after finishing the third against the Cubs. DeGrom said initial tests ruled out a serious issue, but he planned to get imaging and more observation Thursday. The right-hander struck out eight of the nine batters he faced and lowered his ERA to 0.54. Sean Reid-Foley (2-0) relieved deGrom and allowed one run over two innings. Anthony Rizzo ended the bid for a combined perfect game or no-hitter by homering with one out in the fourth. Kevin Pillar opened the scoring with an RBI double off Robert Stock (0-1) in the second and homered in the fifth. GIANTS 13, DIAMONDBACKS... [More]

Wed Feb 24 202117:05Good or great? D-backs confident Marte can be the latter
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — There's very little doubt Arizona's Ketel Marte will be a good baseball player this season. He can hit for average, steal bases, smash homers and play multiple defensive positions at a high level. But if the Diamondbacks want to bounce back from a disappointing 2020 season, they probably don't just need the good version of Marte. They need the great one. The 27-year-old has already proven that's possible. He had a breakout season in 2019, making the NL All-Star team and finishing fourth in the MVP voting after batting .329 with 32 homers, 36 doubles and 92 RBIs while playing above-average defense at second base and center field. Early in D-backs spring camp this week, the switch-hitter flashed a few sweet left-handed swings during batting practice, launching the ball over the right-field wall. “It's impressive,” infielder Asdrubal Cabrera said. “He's got the talent to be a superstar.” That's exactly why Marte's 2020 season was so disappointing, even if he was still... Mon Feb 22 202122:54AP source: Tyler Clippard agrees to 1-year deal with D-backs
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a $2.25 million, one-year contract with reliever Tyler Clippard, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press. The agreement was reached on Monday and confirmed to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal is pending a physical. The deal includes a $1.75 million salary this year and a $3.5 million mutual option for 2022 with a $500,000 buyout. The 36-year-old right-hander is a two-time All-Star and has 777 appearances over 14 seasons with a career 3.13 ERA. He had a 2.77 ERA in 26 appearances with the Minnesota Twins last season, when he made $1,018,519 in prorated pay from a $2.75 million base salary plus $190,021 in earned bonuses for total income of $1,208,540. This will be Clippard's second stint with the Diamondbacks. He appeared in 40 games with the team in 2016 before being sent to the New York Yankees in a trade. Clippard is the second veteran bullpen arm the D-backs have signed in... [More]

Wed Feb 17 202116:02D-backs do-over: Lovullo ready to roll after rough 2020
Manager Torey Lovullo is eager for a do-over after a 2020 season that the Arizona Diamondbacks won't remember fondly. Getting it right might decide his future with the franchise. The 55-year-old Lovullo enters his fifth year with the Diamondbacks — and the final year of his current contract — under a substantial amount of scrutiny. Arizona spent a lot of money on free agents before the 2020 season but fell well short of expectations, finishing in last place in the NL West with a 25-35 record. Lovullo shrugged off any notion that he's feeling added pressure on Wednesday, when the team's pitchers and catchers went through their first workouts in Scottsdale, Arizona. The manager said he's approaching the upcoming season just like he's got a “10-year contract under my belt.” “Look, it's a game of results,” Lovullo said. “I need to be held accountable to that. I would expect that. I ask the players to be accountable. So for me, it's a nonissue.” Lovullo has had a generally successful tenure... [More]
Sat Feb 13 202116:18AP source: D-backs, IF Asdrubal Cabrera agree to 1-year deal
PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a $1.75 million, one-year deal with veteran infielder Asdrúbal Cabrera, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press. The agreement was reached on Friday and confirmed to the AP on condition of anonymity Saturday because the deal is pending a physical. Cabrera can earn up to $1.05 million in performance bonuses. The 35-year-old is a two-time All-Star who was with the Washington Nationals in 2020, batting .242 with eight homers and 31 RBIs in the pandemic-shortened season. Cabrera seems like an ideal fit for the Diamondbacks at second base, which would move the versatile Ketel Marte back to center field. Marte had a breakout year in 2019 while playing mostly center field but was moved back to primarily second base in 2020. Cabrera was an All-Star with the Cleveland Indians in 2011 and 2012. He has played all four infield positions during his career and has nearly 1,700 career hits, along with 188 homers. The Diamondbacks have made a couple of moves over the past few weeks after a quiet offseason. They signed veteran relief pitcher Joakim Soria to a $3.5 million, one-year deal. Arizona is coming off a disappointing 25-35 record in 2020, which put them last in the NL West. ___ Follow David Brandt on Twitter: www.twitter.com/davidbrandtAP ___ More AP MLB coverage: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
